often on this shard this is what i see:

2 or 3 pks, hunting together. looking for pvm characters likes bards hunting in dungeons. they make their kill, then are "nice" enough to leave all the loot and go on their way.

here is how I see this:
the players they target are not ready for PVP, so do not have a chance at 1 vs 1, let alone a pack attacking them. so there is no actual challenge, which makes the whole thing not a game, not a challenge, but a quick boost to the Pk's ego, letting the pk with low self-esteem feel better about themselves by picking on much weaker targets. and then the "charity" of them not looting, helps them not feel guilty about their actions.

Am I looking at this wrong? Id love to hear a different perspective

Im not complaining against pking here.. im talking about the style of pking.

im saying I believe not looting is NOT a generous act. it is a completely selfish act to help the pk feel better about themselves.

and im saying I believe a PK who wanted the challenge of a fight would not be running in a pack.

But I am open to other ways of looking at it if anyone has one to share

Personally when i PK, i roll solo about 85% of the time. Its way more challenging to do it solo. 3 vs 1 isn't really a challenge, only challenge is if you can do it before the recall macro.

When I pk i have my two other boxes on standby with dragons to gate in at any second but i generally only do that to kill bosses not people. Very rarely will i gate in my pets to attack a tamers pets while i kill them.

It just depends why people kill, some just want the numbers, some want the fun, some want a challenge. The more that people PK solo or in small groups, the more fun it is for everyone. I go for the challenge, but at the same time, im usually not looking for a fair fight when i PK.

Most reds on this server are bad. They either group you or are stupid enough to shit talk you right after they tried soloing you with your pets.

They actually do the same crap as their victims, whine on the forums and use other external communication stuff to make yourself look bad.

From my perspective, as a pk, I choose when to dry loot or just restock as I would in flipping a coin. It has nothing to do with my self esteem, I'd like to believe I am decent enough of a PK by now. Do note, I see myself as a competent pker which is very different to a pvper. One I am good at, the other I am average.

Also remember that seeing a group of pks is a good thing, means there are like minded people playing this game together. After all, tamers are grossly overpowered here when tripple boxing and insta ressing. 100 mana just isnt enough to kill.

The real challenge (and victory) is finding 2 or 3 reds, who are currently playing, in the same time zone, in your voice channel, to go pk with. I don’t think we need to do a psychoanalysis on the state of their esteem as to why they do this. Good for them for finding likeminded people to play with on a 20 year old video game.

I personally don't waste time looting as it reduces the amount of time to kill more people and leaves me vulnerable for another incoming attack. Plus, nothing anyone in the dungeons has anything I want/need.

PKing has many goals, one of them being to force un-consensual PVP in a hide and seek environment. We want real PvPers to show up after their PVMs die.

Much of it is practice for how fast you can down an opponent he moment you are in range. Looting is just a byproduct of it.

What you are seeing is one perspective of what PKs/PVPers actually do.

The PK dungeon runs are more of a practice and less of a test of might.

I see it like I do for pvm. I can farm alone killing dragons over and over, but it can be more fun playing with other people.

I figure with some pks they have either done it solo so many times that they dont have to prove to themselves they can anymore and seek companionship in their murdering escapades, or they are bad enough to where they do need help.

    This 100%.

Before it became the norm to identify as a victim of everything the world throws at you, people would organize and fight back.

The feeling of overcoming something that may at one time have felt unachievable is very gratifying. Even though beating some big bad AI boss can mimic this feeling its very diluted compared to having fought back/beaten other actual players, especially if they are players who had beaten you earlier.

Being forced into situations you may not be comfortable in can and often times will make you a stronger person when you overcome them.

The overarching theme from people who continue to come back to play UO is that the world was not safe. There are tradeoffs when it comes risk/reward. Its not the AI monsters that are our biggest adversaries, it is the other players.

Controlled environments will always be safe. Your trammels, pvp-consent servers and all the other barriers established by new mmos which safeguard their playerbase from loss. I believe most of these environments were created to retain a larger playerbase because accounts = revenue for the business.

It has nothing to do with low self-esteem.

Most people who fill the PK role are resourceful/clever individuals looking for a challenge, these are confident high esteem people. The reason they leave items is because they don't have any value to them, nothing to do with charity or making themselves feel better.

As an orc on foot we often can't find anyone to fight and running around the whole map looking at people in houses isn't particularly fun. You'd be amazed how often a toon recalls in after you kill an afk tamer. We aren't going to do it all night (95% at least, personalities vary and depends on smack talked) but its often like a Player Summon ball. Sometimes more players show up than you can handle and with pets but it beats nothing happening at all.

As a Victim, I chalk it up to the challenge. Sometimes it can be a mild pain in the a$$, but thats only cause either i was on a roll and they threw my hunting mojo off or i have to restock everything again ;P. Either way? I wouldn't have it any other way.. Like Someone said to me before, Can't let folks get to comfortable ;)

I personally think Chase is the best solo PK i've witnessed, Then Dredd, Mainly cause he is using a dexxer and gets the job done *when solo*

Never had the pleasure of running into either of the mentioned except for Merlin, who trained me and much of my style is mimic'd from.

However, in the current server environment, there are many great solo artists.

I hold Balian/Lora/Cypher in high regard and his kill % of when he encounters you is high. Extremely hard to escape from.
