Ah, so only the thieves would get this new benefit? I'm all for it!

Trammel is a world without risks, this is simply a change remove a tedious aspect from the world which has not existed on free shards (other than a few) or OSI for over 15 years. The risk is still there, we are just providing home owners a tool to learn the Renaissance system and remove the tedium of checking each door individually. Sometimes to have the felucca aspects everyone loves you have to compromise to allow for the server to appeal to all.

Beetles are part of the 3rd Dawn 3D Client.
The purpose is to provide players with additional information when using detect hidden in their house. Requiring GM detect hidden would just replace one burden with another.

Keep in mind these things arise because the staff works with new players daily to find the points of confusion when playing on the Renaissance server. House security will always be the result and diligence of the homeowner. However it is our job to provide the tools for the player to learn and implement common security practices. Only 10-15% of our new players have experience with the classic key based house security.

You would be surprised how many people have items looted because they assume that only friends of the house can open the locked down containers, or assume keys are blessed, or that only friends can enter the house.

This change will make the tools available to players to keep their house secure, However the choice to use them will still be up to the player. So when a player fails to read the guide or use the detect hidden skill and gets their house looted the situation is less frustrating because the tools to prevent that were easily available.

If a player doesn't detect hidden, or have a table wall this change will have zero effect on their chances to be looted. I'd like to think the house looters on UOR can manage more than simply looking for an unlocked door from a player that doesn't understand the ruleset.

As always, if you object to a change (the reason we make these posts) please indicate why in detail. Along with situations in which this will have the opposite effect from what is intended.

During this era of the game your lock down containers were safe and there were more secures/lockdowns available per house. You could leave your door unlocked when you weren't home and there was no real risk of losing anything since it was all locked down or secured. Here on UO:R there's a more feluccan feel to housing.

I meet a lot of new players that don't understand why their house keeps getting looted. I've seen Chris spend a lot of time in game coaching new players about what happened with their houses as well.

I don't spend a lot of time harrassing new players or looting houses so I'm fine with this personally.

Can you elaborate? How does this change remove risk? A player still has to remember to check their doors, just like today.

In modern games, this kind of change is heralded as a "Quality of Life" improvement.

It comes down to educating new players on the ruleset and the shard's customization. It's just as easy to teach new players to "lock your doors" than it is to tell them about this new custom thing you created. The more custom features you add, the larger the learning curve, even if you think it's being added to make things simpler.

I generally agree with that philosophy. I wrote a guide about "UOR Customizations", and in general I favor things that don't make that guide any longer.

On the other hand, in this case they could learn about this functionality by accident when they simply use Detect Hidden.

Love this. I cannot begin to tell you how obsessive I am about checking my doors manually.

There's no learning curve here because the first time someone uses DH at any level in their house they will learn the benefit. People still to this day, who have played in Felucca for many years, fail to DH when they get home. They fail to lock their doors. They forget to replace that trash barrel or table and boom, looted. This happens and the change will not impact that in any way. It will simply save those who already practice proper security a few footsteps.

In situations where events are being hosted this will be handy for assuring certain areas are locked without wasting the time of the participants while you double check everything.

All told, anyone opposed to this is only intent on making others rage and leave, which leads to a smaller player base. In short, all opposed hate playing with people. :p

I take it you want deco tools removed too so we can use fishsteaks again or perhaps you want to cut bandages one at a time.

I kinda like this idea.. as you said, to eliminate the tedious OCD-like behavior gone through checking doors.

I actually have it to where the key I leave on porches with double doors ONLY works on one side. That saves me from needing to check it each time.

It would be nice to just check doors visually when I do detect after closing it.

    Dig it.

I agree that this isn't much of a change, because you still have to remember to use it. Also, this is beneficial in a shared housing situation as well.

You know when relatives come over, they forget to lock doors and clean up after themselves!

If you don't change stuff like this to help people it won't be long before you have no fresh meat to prey on at all!

Newish to server (2-3 weeks) and loving it. Grats on your dedication Chris.

I have been a player since beta and left after a few weeks of tram. Been in free servers ever since. I like to think of my self as a hardcore player, meaning I enjoy the aspect of total loss. 90% of the time I don't even retrieve my own corpse. My fav char of all time was my thief. i have looted more than a few houses in my time and there's no greater feeling in UO.

But I have to say, I like this aspect, it will do no harm to house thiefs because those who don't practice DH on entering their home will not benefit from this. Those who will benifit from this, (me!). As large tower owner, which is also a guild house, It is solely my fault if my security fails. I do practice DH and table walls at every level of my tower, as you progress floors, the tighter security.

I have the house set as private with the secure box on top of doors set to friends with the front door key in it. (very poor security, as someone WILL fuck it up.) I have interior doors on key locks and in secure containers (owner only) beside the doors, I also have a table lock down on the penthouse room door. I practice DH every single time I enter my home, on every floor.Am I secure? prob not to the dedicated thief.

Will someone forget to relock a table down? yes, without a doubt. This will let me know what are locked and what isn't at a glance, even tho I do it manually now.

:TLDR, I like this even tho I love to house loot.

I always had locked down bookcases blocking the interior access points. A pain to unlock and move them each time...but I never was stolen from :) Open a door, step in and lock the door, then unlock the bookcase or bookcases to get to my chests.
