and even then you mean a team of reds, it's not like you leave much to chance running 3+ deep. And I'm not saying this because I care about your pking, I dont. What I do care about is the fact that you accuse others of using a "holier than thou" mentality while doing the same in the same post. I'm not trying to say SL is any better than anyone about the way they fight, but at least we're honest. I have sat back and watched you slander us for things that you are all equally guilty of, and it's old. If we want to better the faction scene let's just be real here. You guys ghost just as much as anyone, you guys loot, you would res kill if ever given the chance (I don't know any SL dumb enough to res in front of oranges for this very reason), you guys use guards, and on one occasion even had crooks lure them into CoM base. We are all guilty, and as long as we are all guilty of doing things inside the game mechanics I couldn't care less, Im just saying let's be honest about it.

I know it's off topic but just wondering if it is a prerequisite to be a deranged nitwit to be in SL?

This sort of ignorance is why I don't weigh in so much anymore. I'm being quite civil and speaking only facts, and here you are with insults that wouldve been lame in middle school, let alone betwixt grown men. I suppose I'll butt out now for the fact that no matter what I say it will be met with slander and disrespect. See you guys when you decide to spend more time fighting in game

Wow guys.... Give it a rest or make a new thread called "life isn't fair, let's cry together."

This is about a policy change. TY Telamon for looking out for the shard's best interest :)

I vote for being able to have unique names with the option to repeat your own chosen names across your three accounts

That would be nice but I think it's Razor that has issues with it, not UO.

    You already can.

The only issue is having dupes logged in at the same time and doing razor things with the wrong acct/char. To resolve this issue, select the other dang window.

Gold sink: 10,000,000g Unique Name option. No further characters can ever use your name. No retroactive changes but players who have the same name can elect to change to something other than the newly locked name, and be given 100,000g for their troubles.

    :)

In my time here on UOR and other servers, I typically sit in the shadows and stay out of the forum/pvp drama. I realize that this area of the game can be very important to people, and I’m not saying that the drama should stop. However, one common thread running through each crisis seems to be the changes that Telamon (or any other shard owner/gm for that matter) makes. Specifically, accusations usually surface that accuse Telamon of cowtowing to a specific person or group of people. Now, I see this translating in two possible ways for how Telamon decides to input or make changes to the shard:

    1. Telamon listens to player feedback and lets this influence his final decisions.

    2. Telamon does not listen to player feedback and does not let this influence his final decisions.
In Option 1, Telamon is perceived positively by some and negatively by others--this seems to be the nature of making changes that are not 100% supported (just look at any government). However, would Option 2 really be what people playing on this server would want? Once a pattern of unilateral, unjustified decision making arises, Telamon would be accused of being a dictator who doesn’t listen to his player base; furthermore, he would probably still be accused of letting players influence his decisions, but it would be based on conjecture and conspiracy theory-like presumptions.

The point of all of this is to argue that Telamon is in a Catch-22. He’s damned if he listens to his player base--which will never speak in unison--and he’s damned if he doesn’t--he becomes a suspected (bribed) tyrant. I see a lot of people failing to realize this or choosing to ignore this. For example, it truly amazes me to see how much patience Telamon has in his forum posts, and I don’t imagine that his patience has an unlimited span.

What I don’t want to see is Chris getting fed up with all of the bullshit that follows from maintaining and running this shard. Therefore, anyone out there who gives him bullshit, just think of the options available to him and what you can really expect from a game that is populated with real human beings who by nature never see eye to eye. Oh and just to dispel any arguments that I’m writing to win favor or “take Telamon’s side,” here’s a little gem for you:

Telamon, I wholeheartedly oppose your duplication of hue 272, 273, and 274 lep sandals this year; it really pissed me off. Oh and the whole name change deed thing seems a bit blown out of proportion because stupid names are stupid names and stupid names don’t cause or disrupt stupid behavior. People will leave the shard whether they’re killed, harassed, or otherwise annoyed by someone with a duplicated name. When it comes to UO, rage-quitting a shard over Felucian mechanics merely confirms that UO is the wrong game for you. If a player wants to dump some gold into a name change deed and request your time and attention, then allow them to do it. If this is consuming too much time and becoming a nuisance (undoubtedly, it sure sounds like it has) then I suggest raising the price of name change deeds to compensate for the additional work on your behalf.

So there, I have participated in the drama; I have contributed to railing on Chris for changes that he has made. However, I don’t expect Option 1 (the current system based on the explanations and flak that I have seen Chris provide and receive) to change; there can never be universal agreement within a society (yes, I just elevated our online, fantasy world to a society) and I try to remember this whenever I want to complain. Anyone reading this should too.

I think this is a good policy. I'm surprised there are 4 pages of discussion, none of which I'll read.

This is a pointless change. To say that players with the same name causes staff problems in identifying accusations since players account identity is hidden is kind of void when you claim that it IS legal to copy another persons name AS LONG AS it is done via new character creation, but not with a NCD. In other words, the same confusion you claim is the reason for the NCD restriction, is still possible through new character creation. It really makes no sense to me.. So basically if player A changes his name to the same as player B, it is too difficult to "respond to researching bug reports, conduct violations, etc.," or issues made by some random person, and therefore you're restricting name change policy, but it's perfectly legal for person A to create a new character with the same name as person B, and thus it's an utterly mute idea to restrict NCD in the first place. lol???

However creating a new char with a dup name, takes much longer to make an effective player than to change a names using a deed for less honorable means. And it wastes staff time both changing the name and dealing with an upset party who was misrepresented. I'd rather have beneficial things happening, new content or whatever, which makes the player experience better rather than staff dealing with what name change has turned into. Fun and jest has turned into something less than fun as I see it.

It takes what, 5 days to make a new char? And how many people are honestly duping names? There's two main instances of duped names that are relevant to any conversation and thats the Dank Nuggets and the Illillil's. Can you honestly say that's absorbing that much staff time? Do you really think either of the two groups are affected that much with the time and resources either group has to just make a new char with a duped name? Honestly...it's dumb. I have to agree that I believe this issue comes from some players whining over bullshit because they were killed, or griefed, by some players that had duped names. But to say that altering the NCD policy is going to fix that is absolutely mind blowing to me.

El Horno thank you for making my point clear. This policy change affects only a small fraction of the population. Notably the section that would pay 100k to change a name versus simply making a new character. Like Mandevu pointed out almost all character templates can be made in a few days and for far less than 100k.

As the administrator of this server I can take certain actions, and there are certain things we will not do.
    • I cannot/will not enforce unique character names. I have stated on many occasions I think this is a terrible idea.
    • I will not add any restrictions on picking a new character name other than what we already have in place.

However regarding name change deeds I have a few options that are within our mission statement.
    • I can allow them to be purchased for 100k from the hair stylist vendor but change the policy governing their use to encourage more name diversity.
    • I can remove the deeds from the hair stylist vendor and return to a world where the only way to change your name is to start a new character.

Currently I have selected to continue to allow the deeds to be purchased. We are simply encouraging players select distinct new names when possible.

I would encourage players to wait until they are denied a name change before devolving into righteous indignation over how the change "might" affect them. We have been implementing this change for months already as I would discourage players from copying other popular player names for nefarious purposes when they have been using name change deeds. By heading off the drama ahead of time we avoid situations that require staff involvement like when someone copies a popular member of the community and goes onto scam new players using their reputation.

If you can make a good enough case for the name you want when using a name change deed it will be granted. It has become clear to the staff that the current climate of copy cat names is not good for the servers health.

This change has nothing to do with any single player, or group of players activities.

Over the course of Renaissance's history we have made changes like this to improve the quality of life for our players. And with most there is an initial period of perceived outrage, which fades once people take a moment to think about it.
