Hello all, I have seen much debate in my time here about what PvM builds are best. The primary dispute comes down to who does the most damage. Is it a tamer with two dragons & a mare or maybe its an axer with a slayer of vanq? Many of us have seen these question asked, but the combat log on the test server does not track pets or provoked monster damage. Below is a list of rules and how this works: Rules You must kill dragons, no golden drags or other mobs. Why? because this DPS challenge is designed to evenly test all weapons, skills, pets, mages, and other. All dragons have an average of 810hp, 60armor, and high resist. Timed kills on other mobs will give very inaccurate DPS results compared to others. You can only be doing damage with ONE character (one account). You cannot use other accounts to buff the main character, provoke mobs on their dragon, or assist in any DPS related way. Assisting accounts cannot debuff, paralyze, peace or effect the dragons in any way. You CAN use other accounts to heal your main character. Other accounts may also be useful in fighting off additional mobs in the area. No staged fights... happen to find all ten dragons all at half health? NOT ALLOWED Provoking dragons on an Azure dragon or other boss one at a time while your tames pitch in for a little damage? NOT ALLOWED You may provoke multiple mobs on a dragon, but none can be more powerful than a dragon, you may argue whats more powerful. Keep in mind, the first provoked monster to hit the dragon starts the DPS clock. Be as honest and accurate as possible with your kill-times. I reserve the right to add/alter rules as needed. How it Works Simple, kill ten dragons and time each kill! See the chart below about calculating your DPS or watch the video. Post what your characters build is in the following format (this format may change as needed): Character Name___ total average dps str/dex/int weapon used (no weapon) if none used average spells & number of uses per-fight (no magic) if none used number and type of pets used (no pets) if none used number and type of summons used per-fight (no summons) if none used list any potions or wands used character skills list Examples listed below: Keza Ranger___12.006 dps 85/100/40 +15 bow of power no magic 5 scorpions (all trained) + mount no summons GM Archery, GM Tactics, GM Anatomy, GM Animal Lore, GM Veterinary, 90 Healing, 55 Magery, 55 Taming Keza Warrior___7.505 dps 100/100/25 +20 Short Spear of Power no magic 1 forest ostard (trained ossytank) no summons GM Fencing, GM Tactics, GM Anatomy, GM Animal Lore, GM Veterinary, 90 Healing, 30 Magery, 80 Resist

This basically juts confirms it. Was at taming quest fighting spectral bunnies. 5 frenzied ostards > 3 dragons.

If I wasn't on my laptop, I'd test a tamer with evaluating intelligence ebolts. Thats what I'm most curious about. Also waiting for Lutz to post all his melee numbers!
@El Horno , your ebolt spam destroys! Think you could list how many you got off per fight on average?
@Keza - neat idea. i wish we could be a little more sciencey about he whole thing but let's work with what we've got. yeah i suppose i would be concerned that @El Horno is dumping all of his mana and finishing as the dragon dies. perhaps a longer term test would show his ebolt spam as being less effective because of his having to meditate in between (and probably having to do so mostly passively, since he'll be veting hit pets). that being said, i wonder if trained WWs would rank more highly than dragons on this test because they have a more liquid mana pool. it is common knowledge that dragon dps will outlast WW dps (because of firebreath). it is for this reason, coupled with the fact that the mobs which you really want to rank highly on on the dps chart for are long-lived mobs, that most people use dragons.

I NEVER left the spawn at wind, that was 20 successive dragons. Only twice was mana an issue when a dragon spawned like immediately after. Under diso, i pretty much don't need to heal. 2-3 vets and the dragon is 100% for the next spawn. I would get 3-5 ebolts off. I would personally NEVER do this for actual farming, but for DPS tracking purposes I figured ebolts would bump my dps up.
Lol, the dragon would die before all 8 frenzied could get to it. Also, @mikek85 I dont have an Axer/tamer to even attempt this, but I do encourage someone else to try!
This was basically the xmas instanced events. And it was awesome. As for this study, for non-boss enemies it depends on a number of factors. If you're only measuring the amount of time to kill the monster, you're missing stuff like how maneuverable you are. It is problematic with a pack of 8 hell hounds or frenzies. It also depends on whether your wyrms and dragons and nightmares ever run out of mana. When I did extended farming of elder gazers, my dragons would always run out of mana after a few minutes, so their DPS would purely be their melee and firebreath. In that case, frenzies would be better. But for those first few minutes, the dragon spells made them superior to a pack.
Eh, if it was simply fastest time to kill 10 dragons I'd be more interested. 4 frenzieds on each of 2 dragons. Macro: D follow C, C follow B, B follow A, A follow me and H follow G, G follow F, F follow E, E follow me Ostards on parade.
@Dalavar I agree with all of this. I know you tried the 8 hell hounds build and I have tried the 8 frenzied. Bogugh's method works well for following but I still run into issues during combat trying to manage and move around with 8. Towards to topic raised by @Liberation about DPS over time. I considered this when making the test, but couldn't think of an "easy" uniform way for all players to show their results. The DPS challenge may not be perfect, but it has already proven a few things: If you are willing to spam Ebolt at the risk of having low-no mana when a PK shows up, you can farm way faster. 4 nightmares is looking to be the best "practical" tamer build for damage. I wont argue for frenzied ostards being better as they are more of a glass cannon build and cannot be practically used vs. bosses. (my fluffy kill was luck)
