I agree with PFR. That said I loved bolas and miss them dearly. You can almost see the panic when someone got dismounted and couldn't run away at top speed. The fact is that bolas are just a counter to mounts but people dislike them because they can't handle being on foot. I understand they aren't here and we do limit ourselves by not using mounts (some of us) and I'm willing to take that hit. But damn I do miss bolas.
Be careful what you wish for, I think 99% of you have been around long enough to have seen a "bad fix" stacked on top of a "bad fix", in the name of equality/fairness/whatever. Why get dismounted off an easily killed Horse/Llama/Ostard, when you can get dismounted off a Mare and send it like a "cruise missile" up your "on foot" attackers arse, and jump on your ethy......And when you can't seem to outrun a pet or gank squad you all of a sudden see some dude in sneakers outrunning mounted foes on foot.... Mages toting Shields to counter dismount archers... I mean really, where does it end? I completely understand where the Orcs are coming from in wanting this, but as I stated in my previous post... I think this is the best non-game destructive answer.....
Or, I mean, you could just let your orcs ride mounts if it's that much of an issue that you need to ask for special concessions / code to be written. Roleplaying is great and handicapping yourself almost goes without saying (uh, why do I have GM spirit speak on this character?!) but if it comes down to asking the GMs for favors so you can compete, it might be worthwhile to take a look at the limits you're imposing on yourself and decide if they're really worth it.
It's not meant to help us compete, our krimp tactics allow us many kills. Bolas are, in our view, a tool of mayhem. It's an item that is as orcish as the helm and thigh boots, so you can't possibly be too upset that we ask for them. Again, if implemented they would only be used around our Fort, not in dungeons or towns or anything like that. Either for or against there are great points made all around in this thread. Thank you for your imput. It's unlikely this will happen, but it's worth a shot. We will still do what we do with, or without them: demand trybute, clomp ummies, drink grog, *fart* and generally have a great time.
I misunderstood your intentions with this thread, then. My apologies! It still wouldn't bother me, either way. My last post was just something I was thinking about while reading the conversation.
I thought it's legitimate to use ostards as orc? Up to my knowledge there is no RP limitation to mounts in general for orcs. The real reason, you guys aren't using them is because you are stealther PK assassins. Isn't that the case?
Anyone above the Snaga rank can ride an Osty, but as sort of an unwritten agreement we all go on foot when in a group. Solo, you may see orcs on an Osty
Although I'm a hard-rper myself, I can't seem to agree on this. What you're asking is kind of a privilege because of a game system you choose to play. The argument of "everyone can use it" doesn't succeed to backup your idea because most of the URKs are on foot anyway. Like Basoosh, I will say "all or none" because that is only fair. edit: 10 years ago I played at a different Turkish shard where we had orcs riding green polar bears, just like the bad santa here. Maybe they could ride bears?
I never understood why orcs didn't ride horses and just pretend they're worgs. There's a whole lot of pretending going on anyway, why not just broaden the scope a little. Alternatively, maybe Tela can make a larger wolf model for riding purposes and tie it to the new guild system so that only orcs can use them.
In this old orc's opinion it is the same reason we don't wear platemail, all use magic, and use alts for revenge. Because being an orc is supposed to be different and slightly more labor intensive than normal play. Getting an ostard isn't that hard but at least it takes a little work. Similar to how running everywhere is slow and takes patience but often you run into situations that you would have recalled past. If not for Bod addiction *twitches* you would never see an orc char of mine in town unless there to raid. "Broadening the scope" must be done on occasion but should very rarely be done otherwise the scope gets broader and broader until we end up like the BoulderFist Orcs. (no offense meant of course! I loved fighting you guys through the years). And I really like the warg idea but I still agree with others in that we'll need to earn it first. Don't get me wrong we are awesome and deserve everything we dream of but we can wait for it a bit longer.
Thats why it makes sense to allow bolas for the whole server and everything is solved. I can't seem to dig up a reason why not allowing bolas is beneficial unless you are the type that runs down people on foot because it makes you feel better.
TLDR - bolas for all or none at all I've played an orc. My clan had this discussion once. We agreed that us role playing orcs are in it for primarily for the fun. We equally agreed that no horses amplified our need for planning ahead, strategy, and leverage our arrangement with one another to strengthen our teamwork skills. We viewed the on foot as a challenge and were happy that it inspired us to talk over some plans to help overcome our handicap. Most of us had hiding, some of us had stealth. The mojo types had magery for invis. We set up ambushes in particular areas. The short of it is... we're hidden in strategic places. Player comes by, one of us drops something seemingly valuable. Player comes over to investigate. Kult-r moves in with DP Kig-r's wait in hiding Maybe have a Ligz-r poised behind a tree ready to fire (in hiding, of course) Mojo(s) ready to recall in (if you are allowed to recall) Chief comes out of hiding and asks why humie takin me shinies! Gib tribute or me clomp lat! Lat gruk me? If the player is obviously new, the Chief would tell player (in orc of course) to hold on, we have a translator. Translator would come out of hiding and give a brief overview what the Orc Clan is all about. Overall we'd role play it up as a fun engagement with another player, not with the goal of just killing them and taking their stuff. If that's your bag (which I don't think it is), then to heck with your bolas, grab horses and yuck it up. Anyway, if they give tribute, great! If they try to clomp the only visible orc, game on! Perhaps warn the player if they don't give tribute, the Chief is going to call in the Juu Bear (womp-r) and he's going to come out here with a club and beat you to death with it. Anyway, this one little scenario can go many ways. I'd suggest setting up near the Occlo orc camp and have fun with the new players.
There's currently a thread about Archery missing a special move, Allow me to entertain you with this idea, Why don't we just take these rules and apply them to a Heavy Xbow on foot and make it shard wide. Two birds one stone.
Sure that would work. To me, Keeping it simple would be best, Everything you just said except the special cross bow and bolts. I think a long cool down would be just fine extend it from 10 seconds to once every 60 seconds in exchange of the cross bow and bolt idea.
