A NEW PLAYER'S GUIDE TO GETTING STARTED Getting Started First and foremost, allow me the opportunity to welcome each and every one of you to one of the most diverse games ever created. This is one of the few games where you can truely do anything you put your mind to. Before jumping headlong into the wonderful world of Sosaria, you will need to download the Razor client here and the Ultima Online client here Now that the software is loaded, follow the pictures below to connect to the UOR server (Insert pictures steps 1-however many visualizing the IP address, port number, ect) Character Creation Once you're connected to the UOR client, you will need to create an account. Simply type in your desired account name and password in the startup menu. If you get a message telling you the password is incorrect, someone has already chosen to use that account name, you will need to think of another. Be sure to remember your account name and password! After entering your account information, click on the UOR server and click connect. The next screen should be a character creation screen. At this point, it's really up to you to create your character. You can choose one of the premade templates (though I don't really recommend it) or you can choose to make a "custom" character. Being a UO vet of over 13 years, I prefer to make my own characters. To be honest, it really isn't that difficult to do. You will be prompted to pick 2-3 skills and you will be allowed to disperse 50 points throughout your stats (Dex, Str, Int). Picking your stats and starting skills Stats: Strength = Total hitpoints Dexterity = Total stamina and weapon swingspeed Intelligence = Total mana Stats cannot excede a total of 225. IE: 100 STR 100 INT 25 DEX. Stats can be gained through using skills. Some skills are better for gaining stats than others. (Herding and camping are my personal favorites for gaining skills) Stats are fairly simple to gain, so it really doesn't matter what your starting stats are. However, I'll give you an example that I prefer. When creating a character each stat must have a minimum of 10 points in it. Now what to do with the other 50 points? I personally like to have as many points in STR that I can in the beginning, with a few extra points in int for spells. Typically I will start with 15-20 INT, 10 DEX, and 50-55 STR. As stated above, stats are easy to gain. Don't stress too much about your beginning stats, I just prefer 15-20 int to have a chance at casting 4th circle spells (with a bit extra, just in case) Now you'll need to pick a few skills. You must pick at least two, but I advise picking three. Each skill you choose will give you its own unique "newbie item." Newbie items cannot be stolen or lost when you die. You have 100 skill points to disperse as you please. Again, I'll give you my basic starter template. 50 Magery (Probably the most expensive skill to raise, starting out with 50 gives you a huge leg-up) 49 Provocation (Not terribly difficult to gain, but it will give you a newbie instrament) 1 Herding (Useless skill, but it gives you a newbie Shepard's Crook, which will be used to gain stats) Now, this template is for a decent starter Provo Bard. They're easy to macro up to a usable level at an early stage of the game, and are fairly easy to make gold with. Feel free to pick whichever skills you like, this is just my personal preference. Character name, hair, clothing Once you've picked your stats and skills, you'll need to choose a name and hair/facial hair style/color. You can also choose to change the color of your clothing. Clothing and hair can be dyed different colors through dye tubs and hair dye potions in game fairly cheaply. However, hair style cannot be changed without a hair restyle deed. These are not cheap, nor am I sure they even exsist on this server yet. Pick your name wisely, it will not be able to be changed unless it offends someone. Starting city Phew! Almost ready to play! Now you just have to pick your starting city. There are many options here, and each city has its advantage. Yew - A large, open city with an infinite amount of trees and three sheep pens. Good for starting Tailors and Lumberjacks Minoc - A fairly simple city with a great mine only a stone's throw from the bank. Good for starting Miners and Blacksmiths Trinsic - A more complicated city, but it's close the back entrance to Delucia. Delucia is a great mining city with a good source of sheep and cows for Tailors/Miners/Blacksmiths. DO NOT attempt the run to Delucia without first consulting UOAM (UO Auto Map). The trip isn't far, but you can get lost easily if you do not know what you're doing. Britain - The largest city in UO. Most of UO's population swarms to this city. Keeping all that in mind, not every player is as upstanding as the rest. Thieves, Griefers, and Scoundrels of all sorts lurk in the shadows waiting for unsuspecting victims. However, good players also spend their leisure time here selling goods or chatting with the community. This can be a great place for information about the game for a new player, just beware the less than savory types. Try and stay away from the Island cities in the beginning. Finding a way to the mainland can be difficult in the beginning. Beware Buccaneer's Den! It does not have any city guards to protect you from murderers and thieves! Alright! Welcome to the land of Sosaria. The world is vast and dangerous, learn the controls and a few basic macros. Macros may save your bacon when a you're between a rock and a hard place. Controls Right Click - Moves your character in the direction your cursor is aimed. If your cursor is close to your character, you will walk. If is far, you will run. Running drains your stamina, keep an eye on it. Left Click - Your action button. Double left clicking on most things will allow you to use them. You'll be doing a lot of double left clicking in UO. Tab or Alt C - War mode! Do not double click anything you don't mean to kill when in war mode. If you double click an innocent (blue) NPC or player in town, you will be insta killed by the guards. Any questions, comments, concerns? Feel free to ask!
Thanks guys. These guides are part of a series. If you have anything to add, let me know. And nice to see you here Misti! Wasn't sure if you'd make it over or not.
I believe total hit points is actually 50+(str/2).. could be wrong on that one. Also to note individual stats are capped at 125, not sure if that is going to change. I raised my INT to 125 to do magery (for the added regeneration rate), with a wizard hat I have 130 int which I believe will make gaining magery a bit faster
Talked to chris about that last night actually. the plan is to cap stats at 100. That change should be Implemented somewhere in the near future. So.... Gm magery while you still can
Sorry, I should've been more specific. Each stat will cap at 100. But your total stat points are not to exceed 225. For example... 100 STR 100 DEX 25 INT
I don't understand how to use the main left click button. how do u get the banker or npc menu to show up without typing "vendor buy"? I tried single clicking(Brings up char or npc name briefly) and double clicking (brings up npc or play char doll). what am I missing? PLZ HELP
You aren't missing anything. You need to say vendor buy or (name) buy in order to access it. I know that on OSI servers at some point there were 'context menus' in which you could click the npc and bring up a menu of commands to give the npc or object. However, those menus don't exist here and you will need to speak to the npc.
this is terrible news considering I misspell stuff all the time and have a bad memory... basically I have to memorize about 3000 different commands? For example I tried for 2 hours to figure out how to release a tamed animal or get it to follow me. didn't figure it out yet.
It's actually rather simple once you get used to it. The format is always <name> <command>. For example "Joe buy" or "a horse release". When dealing with NPCs you can also use the generic term "vendor" as in "vendor sell" which will initiate the sale with the nearest NPC. Also, most people record a macro for the most common actions. For example, everyone needs an all-in-one bank/buy/guards macro. Create a new macro and record yourself saying: Bank Vendor Buy Guards I ban thee Save the macro, assign it to a hotkey, and you won't have to remember anything.
Is this going to be a new clinically diagnosed impairment? I really don't like to poke fun, but really? Sorry this was such a task for you. I guess I must take for granted the fact that I am not a new player. Is this realm really that complicated to understand and interact in? I hope your new land of butter and honey has provided the necessary handicap friendly environment to assist you with your memory impairment....
