We all have different reasons for playing video games. Mine is to make friends and have fun. What is yours?
The primary reason is because I never got it out of my mind after leaving OSI. I would hear the music in my head and even dream about it. Now that I've come back to my old favorite, I play for recreation and socialization. There are some good people in this shard.
Qi wins whatever this is, but i'll throw in my little bits. We never had a lot of money and didn't have a computer until 96-97. I had a few friends growing up that would play D&D as well as the old SSI rpg's such as DarkSun, Menzoberranzan and Ravenloft: Stone Prophet. We all loved that stuff so much! One friend always played the Ultima games. He told us about UO and got us going with copies. We used to hang out at each others houses and LAN-adventured for way too many hours. I'm not sure if it was the lan-party aspect of the mmorpg life or the bland new mmorpgs nowadays. But this game always "brings me back" to the good 'ol days with my friends and I tearing through dungeons! I remember buying magazines at the mall just to read the UO articles.
Very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.
Make bitter enemies and fight them, then post trash talk on forums or irc, then steal things from places players thought their belongings were safe, wait for decrepit buildings to fall and fight the underground server mafia for the loots within. edit: secondarily the non-stop danger of being mercilessly killed or stolen from anytime, anywhere. My one sadness after many years of UO play is that the losses from death has become trivial. I wish there was a way to consentually be allowed in towns without being guard whacked, while at the same time being functionally red to every other player. Factions and order/chaos just isn't good enough because you are only flagged with others who want consensual pvp. I want to be perma-orange to everyone, all the time.
