I decided to write this after a very successful first week here on UOR. Most beginners guides I've read online for earning gold involve very tedious and boring tasks (picking cotton, sheering sheep, crafting and selling bows...) but with this method you will be adventuring out into the lands of Sosaria in just a couple of days (you will do some of this tediousness, but just to secure enough gold to move onto step three). Within one week you should have 500k-700k+ gold to move forward!

    Part 1

First things first, take advantage of being allowed multiple accounts. Set up your first account and make your first character. For this guide we will be starting with 50 magery and 50 provocation and str/dex/int set to 60/10/10. Head to the Moonglow zoo with a bag full of instruments (all the same type) and a magical wizard's hat, and begin macroing provocation on the frost troll and harpy (I recommend using Upgrayedd's macro here: http://www.uorenaissance.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1646. You'll need to add to the macro to lift and replace the wizard's hat during the skill use cooldown. Let me know if you need help with this). Let the macro run until your musicianship hits GM (make sure he doesn't run out of instruments). Your meditation should be GM, and your intelligence should be in the 70s or 80s by the time musicianship is GM'ed.

    Part 2

Now onto part two. Create your second account, and make your second character. This part is a tad boring, but you'll be out adventuring in no time. Make this character a lumberjack (also with str/dex/int set to 60/10/10) and head straight to Skara Brae (this is the easiest and most convenient place to gather wood. You are always in or very close to the guard zone and bank, and the northern part of the island will provide you with all the wood you need. Just make sure you hit every tree for all the wood it will give you, rinse and repeat). Grab a pack horse and equip your ax and start chopping down wood! I recommend using hatecrime's lumberjack macro here: http://www.uorenaissance.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=340 (just make sure you don't macro this part unattended, unless you want to spend some time in jail).

(optional part 2a: if you plan on creating a tailor, and don't mind the extra tediousness, feel free to take a break from lumberjacking every once in a while and make a trip to the various cotton fields and sheep pens and collect what you can)

Continue gathering wood until you hit GM lumberjacking. You should have 100,000 regular boards and ~2,000 oak boards. Hop on the forums or IRC and find a buyer.

    Part 3

Step three (time for fun!), gather supplies and start playing! Once you've sold your boards go to a tinker and buy a shovel, head to one of the player run vendors around Yew and grab a spellbook and regs for your provo character. Next you'll want to buy as many level 1 treasure maps as you can (they can be found on vendors around Yew and elsewhere, but I found it much easier/cheaper to find a few bulk sellers). You don't need any cartography skill to open them (although it may take a few seconds of double clicking), and your magic unlock spell will be sufficient to unlock the chest (be sure to use telekinesis on the chest after unlocking it, lest ye desire some charred skin). Each chest contains 1,000 gold (among other things that you can sell to NPCs: gems, scrolls. I'm not sure if the armor/weps from lvl 1's are worth taking to use or sell to other players, so someone feel free to speak up on that! You can always sell them to NPCs if not).

To locate where your buried treasure is, refer to this interactive map: http://uo.stratics.com/thb/info/maparch ... ive1.shtml It will take some getting used to, but after a while you will be locating your treasure with ease.

Once you've found the correct number for your map, find a tmap library (there is one on the back part of the marble patio with the jester vendors next to the Yew bank. A huge thanks to whoever owns it!), find the corresponding numbered rune and start digging!

You can raise your strength before going treasure hunting if you want, but I didn't and had no problems (for the most part you will only be encountering ratmen, zombies, skeletons, mongbats and headless ones).

    ========================================================================

Depending on how much you play and how many tmaps you are able to buy, you can earn a decent chunk of gold to continue your adventures. For example, I was able to secure almost 1,000 lvl 1 tmaps and by my 8th day here I had nearly 700k sitting in the bank (and more than enough tmaps to still complete!).

Bonus tip: I highly recommend binding use last spell or use spell recall to F3 (F2 being set to provo). Why? Occasionally you will recall to a treasure chest in a jungle only to find a silver serpent or two waiting to kill you dead. They are very fast and kill very quickly, so it's best to have recall readily available in case you need to bug out. You can kill them if you want, but I found it was just easier to skip that tmap and come back to it when the serpent wasn't nearby.

Thanks for reading! Again, if you need any help with the macros feel free to ask!

I believe the magic properties of weapons in level 1 chests are the same distribution as that dropping from monsters, or level 5 chests.

Why begin the game with 50 Provocation? You'll get to 72-ish very quickly from the Moonglow Zoo. I have to think there's other options you can choose there. Even 50 Wrestling, if you don't yet have the ability to macro it up with an alternate character, can save your hide.

I recommend getting 50 inscription instead of provo. Provo is very cheap and easy to macro and inscription is a skill you might want to train later and is expensive to raise.

I like the guide alot but doubt it can be regarded as a general newbie guide.
You were very lucky that tons of lvl1 tmaps were piling up for the last months and you could get your hands on LOTs of em for a low price.

They're not an unlimited resource and if a couple of new players follow your guide, I see big problems in the further supply of lvl 1 TMaps ..

I really doubt about making so much money but it's valuable help for new players to start with their own economy.
There are some vendors who are selling 1lvl maps very cheaply (like 1500 for 10 maps). Problem is that not every spot is on the main continent, so you will probably have to use ship to get there. Also doubt about using bard here (I think it's not really necessary, but you will make bard anyway so it's up to you), since lvl1 map creatures are relatively easy to kill with any template
    Anyway, nice guide.

Greeper, a rune library is your best bet to get to those islands (or even places on the mainland). There is one near the Yew Moongate, and one near the Britain Moongate. Of course, if you die on an island, you may be somewhat stuck... even if you resurrect, you'll be at like 11 HP and the thing that killed you will probably do so again... but if you're on IRC, just shoot a note on there asking for help and someone may be able to assist. Knowing the treasure map number (according to the link in the OP here) is a huge help in that regard too.

    Good info!

May I also recommend getting in on the BOD game as early as possible. There is tons of serious cash to be made in tailor BODs and it is dirt cheap to raise. Get a GM tailor (or 3) ASAP!

If you die in a VERY remote location like an island, simply use the Help System to get a teleport to town.

Asking for help on IRC is like ordering a dry-loot.

New Player Tip #4 : Asking for help on IRC is awesome - just never give away information that can be used against you - ie. your location.

Well I started out macoring a provo following Upgrayedd's guide and didn't want to move to the next step yet so I went with tmaps. You can probably do something else for your starter skill but that's just what I did.

Yea I guess I should have worded the title better..meant it to be more of a new to the shard guide than a general new player guide.

As for limited tmaps..very true. Perhaps more people will loot them if there is a greater demand :)

You're probably just sitting on a ton of tmaps and want to sell them better ;)
