"Hear Ye' Hear Ye' Newly found Lord Krake already gone missing!!"

    the town crier shouted...
    it was an embarrassment.
snatched from their own library halls.
and in broad daylight no less.
    who could be responsible?

    e a r l i e r - t h a t - d a y

a brigand patrol was moving through Project Sanctuary...
normally they keep their passing sweeps further north, but with all the commotion over Krake the last few days, they figured there could be opportunity closer to the docks.
it wasn't long before they arrived outside the town library.
like most of the area, it was quiet and no sign of passersby.

they turned into the empty hall to rest and decide where to go next.

as they were looking over some maps they heard a door close upstairs.
a hush fell upon the group as their eyes all locked towards the ceiling.
they were not alone after all.
a recruit was volunteered to creep upstairs and check the situation out.
he was not yet a known criminal and could easily pass as your average warrior using the library.

a few minutes later voices and footsteps were heard coming down the stairs.
they ducked behind some book shelves and tables and stayed in the shadows till they could get eyes on the new company.
a shocked look must of taken form on all of their faces...
    it was Lord Krake!
news had spread fast of his return.
but nobody expected to run into him so soon...
certainly not alone, without a single guard accompanying him.

something was off about him though.
he wasn't moving quite like the confident warrior they knew him as, but more like a nervous peasant.
that was when they heard Valinor refer to the man as Boshan.
Boshan? who the hell is Boshan?
the group stepped from their hiding places to figure out just what was going on here!

    kidnapping01.jpg

Krake.. err.. Boshan explained the whole ordeal.
what had happened the day prior out on the Isle of Ambrosia.
they had already heard the story from Bayara...
but thought that it had maybe been a trick to confuse people about Krake's return.
that this fellow was supposed to be from another dimension.
where people live peacefully in the sky.
it all seemed very far fetched.
but standing in front of the man now...
seeing his posture, manner of speech, facial expressions.... his fear.
    this was clearly not Krake.
and if it was... then only a shell of his former self.

we told him the risk he was taking remaining in this keep.
yes, of course Krake was a great man!
but great men, of course, have enemies...
they would know of his return and come for him!
if he truly wanted to be safe then he needed to go somewhere people would not expect to look for him.
we happened to know of just such a place.

    kidnapping02.jpg

Boshan had no reason to distrust the people who had brought him here...
but what the brigands had to say made too much sense to him.
for whatever motivation they had to help him...
he could see that they were right and he would not be safe there.
    he had to leave!

    kidnapping03.jpg

after a long walk through the woods, the group arrived at a large brick tavern just off the road.
    this was the place.

"we've made it! that was almost too easy!" thought the brigands.
only a common elemental and an ogre had stood in their way.
    "were we followed?!?" someone asked.
"no, I am positive of that... nobody noticed us, and if they did... there is no way they kept up with us through the woods".

it had been a long walk and all were thirsty and hungry.
some drinks and food were had to celebrate the crossing.
we did our best to tidy the place up a little for our nervous guest.

    kidnapping06.jpg

it wasn't long before Boshan was ready to rest.
he thanked us for our effort in bringing him here and our protection in looking after him.
    then was off to bed.

    after tucking the fellow in.
a plan was devised over how to best protect their new friend.

You ... monsters! Do you have any idea how important he is? You only care about the ransom when that abomination of a daemon is on the brink of invasion?
The fate of whole Sosaria is at stake and you dare to put this sacred mission in jeopardy?
My god, you are truly simple-minded brigands. Wait till @Antos hears about these atrocities.

Luna came to check on his well-being and to have a discussion... seems this place has been abandon'd and he is missing... Those body parts better not belong to someone we cherish!

what would be the point of kidnapping somebody and walking them all the way through the woods...
if we were just going to kill them anyways?
    just too much trouble!

everybody knows you kill them where they are.
drape the body over a horse.
THEN bring their corpse back to your place, drama free.

::looks around at all the silent people listening to her explanation, some holding hands over their children's ears::

    what? .... WHAT?! you asked!
    but no.
    no no no no.
Lord Krake is alive and well.
you just happened to show up while we were out playing some rat roulette.
we aren't those boring ass kidnappers that sit around playing cards and yelling "shut up!" every few minutes.

The calm silence of the Court of Truth was sharp contrast to the turmoil in Jaana's heart. Antos had not been at the Abbey or the Lighthouse and so she had come here to seek him out at his office. Even before opening his door, she sensed his presence and was not surprised to find him sitting at his desk dozing over a an ancient book bound in a well-worn wooden cover. Deciding not to disturb his sleep, she turned to slip away quietly, but as she did so, she heard him stir and glanced over her shoulder to see him regarding her with a single open eye.

"My apologies, dear Antos. I meant not to disturb thy slumber." she said in a voice that was little more than a whisper,

"Nonsense. I was simply... reflecting on the challenges that lie before us." he snorted defensively.

"Oh, indeed?" she giggled. Despite her many years, being in his presence always reminded her of what it was to be truly ancient and made her feel like a girl again. "Well, not to add to thy troubles, but hast thou heard the latest declaration from the criers?"

"If you refer to the nasty business regarding Krake, I certainly have." He muttered. "That and far more. For the rumors of man, beast and bird have declared much in the way of troubling news."

"Then how shall we respond to this crime?" she inquired.

"Crime?" Antos grunted. "Alas, I fear that no crime has been commited."

"Say not so! The brigands have kidnapped an innocent man! Furthermore..."

"Before that more is furthered, I have heard that the man once known as Krake went with the Brigands of his own accord." He parried.

"Under false pretenses no doubt" she countered, her voice growing louder and more agitated.

"Calm, now, calm!" He urged, raising an assuring hand. "According to my sources, the Brigands dealt their blow with Truth, albeit not the whole Truth."

"Explain thyself, old man!" Jaana, demanded.

"As I understand it, they explained to him that Krake had enemies who would would know of his return and come for him. Also, they warned him that if he truly wanted to be safe then he needed to go somewhere people would not expect to look for him."

"Yet they neglected to reveal that they were the very enemies that he should fear, no doubt! A lie of omission is still an act of deceit!"

"Indeed, it is as you say. But all Truth will be revealed in time and the fact remains that he chose to trust these strangers and followed them of his own free will. The occluded Truth they shared with him was sufficient to win his trust. They also claimed that he would not be safe there, which he obviously was not."

"True, but he is in the hands of the very evildoers who posed a threat to his safety." She retorted with a note of exasperation in her voice.

"Evildoers who have done him no harm and shown themselves to be true to their word." Antos continued. "Whether he questioned their motives or not, he found truth in their words and chose to depart with them to a more secure location where no one might find him. As far as anyone knows, he has not been found and no harm has come to him."

"Agreed." Jaana replied reluctantly. "But for how long will this remain so?"

"Dear Janna, think not that my heart is at peace with this judgement. I have no doubt that the Brigands have a more nefarious plan in motion, but for the time being, they have committed no crime that warrants the reprisal of Justice, have they?"

Jaana could not deny the Truth of the old man's words. It was a bitter truth to swallow, but in the name of Justice, she had to accept that there was nothing that could be done for the time being. She sighed, closed her eyes and bowed her head in acceptance.

After a long moment of silence, Antos said "Jaana, my dear. Greater evils than the Brigands threaten Paws and the whole of Sosaria this day. Evil though they may be, the Brigands are no fools..." seeing Jaana open her eyes and arch her brow questioningly, Antos chuckled and corrected himself. "Well, Bayara is no fool at least. She knows that the evil which stands poised to arise from the void is not one with which they would be wise to ally themselves. She knows that Jael's claim of 'a place of prominence' promised to those that do not oppose his master, is still a position of slavery, just as he himself is a slave."

"Of that I have little doubt." Jaana said coldly. "Then is it thy opinion that these evildoers will ally themselves with the forces of the light to oppose this rising darkness?"

"One can only hope. As I said, whatever ill we may speak of Bayara, we cannot truthfully say that she is fool. Even more than gold and jewels, what she and her cohorts value most is their freedom. Freedom from imprisonment, freedom from the rule of law and, no doubt, freedom from slavery to an as yet unknown master. They are one of the lessers of many evils in the greater scheme that is soon to be revealed."

"So we should bide our time and pick our battles; even if doing so means allying ourselves with those who would otherwise oppose Justice." Janna concluded.

"Exactly so, my dear." Antos nodded. "Strange times make strange bedfellows of us all."

Jaana grinned and eyed him knowingly "Say no more of strange bedfellows, old man! For I know that thou hast looked upon the face of Bayara and, for reasons unbeknownst to me, thou hast found it pleasing to thine failing eyes!"

Antos laughed hoarsely. "As you have just said, my dear. We must pick our battles and that is one I am unprepared to face!"

At this, their laughter rang out through the Court of Truth, breaking its silence and momentarily dispelling the shadow of despair which loomed in their hearts.
