as of right now the only way to farm feathers is to kill a chicken or whatever else drops feathers. What if it was possible to 'shear' chickens for their feathers? To receive a far reduced amount of feathers compared to killing it and plucking the entire bird however.
I like it. Perhaps something slim like a random 3-5 per pull at the same regen rate as wool on sheep.
I think I'm finally getting a little better understanding of how this shard is run by Telamon. Before you request or propose a feature, ask yourself if it is : a) Era accurate b) Fixing something that was either broken or faulty The way I see it, this is 100% no era ever accurate. And there are plenty of other ways of getting feathers - including the very popular and rewarding Harpy farming. Introducing chicken farming would greatly drop feather/arrow prices and most likely remove this income source for new players. The whole idea - while I actually do like it - is a step towards just another custom shard. And that's something I'd hate to see.
You might want to drop the new-found era-accuracy crusade, Wodan. Era-accuracy is not the point of this shard. When a lot of us bring up the subject we're poking fun at another shard. A shard that many of us played on that went to great lengths to recreate game-breaking bugs and hold onto lame mechanics with a death grip. We're perfecting things here and this is inspired by what Telamon saw on this other shard: A bull-headed and mindless approach towards mechanically recreating something that was broken in the first place. There's a foundation for improvement in the era that has been chosen. To this end, there are many things that might be changed with sensitivity towards what should have been done to perfect the game in the first place. Still, no chicken shearing.
It's a neat idea, but let's be honest here, everyone would just grow chickens in their house (without a permit even), introducing more mobiles into the server, and reducing the amount of new players farming harpies or wandering the wilderness. It's in everyone's best interest(s) to keep newer players employed, keep resource cost UP, and get people out of their houses to do more than say "order status".
Well that's what I was trying to put into (b) ... It's great to improve things that went wrong, but adding popular features is not the way to go. I'm not telling anyone what to propose or think ... just be aware that ideas for new features will be considered against those two principles. I didn't even come up with them, it's pretty close to something Chris said in one of the patch or shard notes
There was a Telamon Soldier in the heart of America, Stolen from Africa, brought to America, Fighting on arrival, fighting for survival.
Dreadie, woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy, Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy! Woy yoy yoy, woy yoy-yoy yoy, Woy yoy yoy yoy, yoy yoy-yoy yoy! Chicken wing soldier troddin' through the land, wo-ho-ooh! Said he wanna ran, then you wanna hand, Troddin' through the land, yea-hea, yea-ea.
I wouldn't call this a crusade, but I generally adhere to this as well. For one thing, as Wodan mentions, I heard it first from Chris a bunch of times on this forum. So it's kind of the path of least resistance, in terms of avoiding setting ones' self up for disappointment. But, as I've probably harped on before as well, I think the least amount of customizations on this shard, the better. The shard is named after a very specific time period in UO history, so new players are going to essentially expect a recreation of that time period here. The more departures made from that, the more it turns off potential new players looking to join.
 Don't get me wrong Jeb, the idea is great. I'm a farmer - loved Minecraft for all the farming there - but I is a Telaman Soldier maaahn ! Stolen from Trammel, brought to Felucca ...
Not a bad idea at all, but there are some very valid points in this thread (primarily regarding how to ensure the strength of the economy). Killing and harvesting feathers from birds was one of the things I ALWAYS hated about UO haha With that said, IMO the value of cloth is being killed by the ease at which one can macro shearing sheep and picking cotton...
