Hello everyone. I just started playing with this server. I used to play back in the day on the original and now I'm trying to get back into it. Just a quick question. Is there anytime during the game where your skills increase faster than normal. Like a power hour type thing?

    Welcome back to Sosaria!

There is no power hour in UOR. Most of the skills can be trained afk and are difficulty based.

I hope that such things will never appear on this server, and if this happens, then the road to hell is provided!

Hey and welcome back to ultima!

Make sure to stop by irc and check out #renaissance it's a big community. Also can stop by #PS to find some other new players and vets who don't mind helping and answering questions, even if you have no interest in the guild or you have a different playstyle

If you have any questions how just let me know. Forums are good but irc is where it's.

Welcome. A power hour would help so much, but I guess people aren't into that here.

Well skill gain is already heavily accelerated vs old school osi imo, no need for power hour or ggs here. Can do taming in 3 or 4 days if you wished. Can do detect hidden in 25 minutes from 50 to gm if you use a training room, can spar 2 chars and knock out weapon tact anat heal in a day after doing your stats.

If you are stuck on a skill and want an optimal speed method I'll be glad to give some bad advice or find the answer from those who know :D

Will have to take your word for it on accelerated, I never played osi, just another free shard where you could knock out a dexxer or a mage in a couple days easy... here I've been playing for a month and have yet to 7x a single character. So to me skill gain seems pretty slow. Even bad advice would probably be an improvement so feel free to share if you got some. :p

My advice for rapid skill gain:
    1. Join IRC.
    2. Choose the skill you want to GM and find a guide for it.
    http://uorforum.com/threads/one-guide-to-rule-them-all-one-guide-to-find-them.682/
    3. Link the guide in IRC and ask in main chat to confirm that it was still the best way to GM the skill.
    4. If yes, get what you need lined up so you could start the macro. (materials ready, agents set, whatever)
    5. Play UO
    6. When you go to sleep, start your macro.

What skills are you having problems with?

Bunch of us here, myself included, love to build characters. It's on the of the main sources of entertainment for me.

Outside of resist, you can 7x a Mage playing casually and macroing at night in about a week.

Dexxers you can macro to 7x GM (no resist) in a few days of straight macroing.

Crafters take a little longer due to resource gathering but still easily done

Well, magery for example. I seem to be gaining around .2 per hour, is that normal?

Pekka had 76 magery something yesterday, went out with some fellows from PS doing 3 lvl 5 T-maps, fizzled maybe 60-70% all together with E-bbolt, but gained 1.2. Maybe not the best char to choose for a lvl 5 but I thought he wouldnt fizzle so much well, well. The 1.2 gaining within such a short period of time felt nice anyway. :)

What is your magery at and what spells are you using?

Try to leave your char out in the gemae during nights, hitting itself in its head with Lightning to start with, using a Razer macro.

I also think that skill gain here on UOR is pretty slow. And I also find it hard to belief that it was even slower on OSI. Though, I made excessive use of the power hour, so
maybe my mind plays tricks on me. On the last freeshard I played skill gain was much faster. Additionally you could buy/steal/earn skill balls to fasten those tricky skills up. I liked that because it helped players like me (family/job) who play for about 2-3 hours an evening (3-4 times a week).

All in all it took me quite long as well to 7 GM my first character on UOR. Especially as I don't leave my PC running all day/night. At least in Germany we do have to pay for energy, hehe.

Nethertheless, gaining .2 per hour is not normal (at least if you are still below 95 skill). Are you training resist as well? If not, simply cast Invis on yourself from 50 - 86. After that ressurection with a second account works pretty well.

I was at around 84 magery when I wrote that and casting Invis... was hardly gaining anything, then I switched to Resurrection early and that helped a lot. I also play a few nights a week generally, and don't like to leave my computer running all night either, but I did it just to finish up that magery.

Maybe there's something I'm missing but I don't see how a power hour or faster skill gain could really hurt? I like that everyone has to actually level their skills here and there's no pay-to-win stuff like skill scrolls and skill balls, I just wonder if the length of the creation grind might be prohibitive to new players thinking of joining.

Or is that part of the idea? To keep out the riffraff that plagues other shards by making it take a long time to get started?

Yeah, the gains very much slow down around 83/84/85. I remember I switched to resurrection a little bit earlier too.

I am all in favor for a faster skillgain. I wouldn't propose that if macroing skills was forbidden here on UOR. But as everyone is macroing the skills anyway I don't see the point in slower gains.

However, once you have your first 7 GM Char UO is a lot more fun. You are finally able to play the game and can macro two other chars on different accounts!

I remember, there was this item on OSI they put in with the 7th year expansion, something called soulstone. I bought several codes to get 4-5 of these stones. You could put them up in your house and you were able to put a GM skill into it and store it. So, let's say there is this tedious skill like lumberjacking etc. you couldn't be bothered to train up again, you would simply put it in this stone, log out, log in with another character from the same account and would than put this skill onto the new char. I liked that very much! You actually could concentrate on playing this game and not macroing the whole time.

At 85 I started casting Earthquake. Lots of failures but I would gain even when I fizzled which was most of the time. The gains were steady and I Earthquaked myself to 100. I did that on a boat. To break the monotony, I also went around casting summon air elementals. I noticed that for some reason Magincia was a good place for that and as soon as I could cast it reliably, I would go in that jungle with 4 elementals and have them fight serpents, and lizards and got me quite a nice spined leather collection out of that. I don't know why Magincia seemed to be a higher success rate with the air elemental spell but for me it was. I also found that Magincia was a nice place to practice because there is hardly anybody there, it has a bank and a mage shop and there are plenty of mobs for air elementals to fight. I funded magery practice by escorting NPC's since reagents can eat into your budget quite a bit, and casting gate while escorting got me a point or two.

Most skills are incredibly easy compared to OSI. Magery for example is 2 days worth of macroing. 50-80 invis, 80.1-GM Rez (or Meteor Storm on a char doing resist.) The longest macroing skill I encountered was hiding. That took the better part of 4 days to GM.

The key is getting your macros right, and not the skill gain speed of the shard. Work that out, and most skills are easy.
