You can pick apples from trees or wheat from the field behind British's castle. Horses enjoy both of those.

Based on recent post history, and the history of the houses in general. The owners have always engaged in altruism. This has been the norm for the 5 years that houses have been there. Its not something that I hope for, its been demonstrated. I believe just recently one of the owners made a public call for more vendors which anyone was free to apply for.

And again the assumptions that are being made is that players A. live in these houses. B. Use them on a daily basis. C. Will benefit immensely from the change. None of these things are true. If someone actually lived in these houses they would be dead in minutes, guard region or no. Because of how unsafe these houses are. A valid concern is that players shopping there have a bit more safety than they had before.

The players that own the houses have both already agreed to the demands placed on them. I have faith that my requests will be respected and players will not ever see "guard zone vendor shop for sale" on our forums or paypal.

It would help to see these houses as not personal possessions of single players but as a resource for the server as a whole. Providing new players with as many vendors as possible is good for the server. For 4 years one of the houses stood empty barely used by the owner. Thankfully he eventually sold it and it was replaced with a marble vendor mall. Our new players cannot simply head to yew to find the items they need to get started. They have to make due with what is available on Ocllo until they are ready to leave the young program.

Keep in mind the young program and our players supporting it is one of the core keys to the success of this server. UOR was a 90-110 online server until we revisited that program in 2013. If you look at the 2nd graph here in the middle of 2013 you can see when we implemented the program and the immediately positive impact it had on the playerbase going forward.

I'm not saying everyone's concerns are not valid. But to address a larger issue that was wasting severe amount of staff time, and to avoid allowing this type of activity to continue as we grow a change had to be made. As you have seen from the denial of service attacks, the mass town killing and the vulgarity in IRC as of late some players/3rd parties have taken issue with our success and were doing everything in their power to try and affect that. Our mechanics have stood as long as they have because our players respected the server and their fellow players. Situations arose in the last month that showed that was no longer the case for a few bad actors. This had to be addressed to maintain our current growth and appeal to new and returning players.

We did not want to have to wait another year to try and lure back players who had once played here but quit to one reason or another. A ton of people returned for the Anniversary event and immediately attacks against these players and the server began. We want to show them that the server is different and their 2nd (or first) run at time here can be enjoyable.

Yeah, they paid a TON of money for these houses. As in what 60 mil or so for one of them.

Again, nothing against the owners of these houses or their intentions or motives, but what if, hypothetically, one or both of these houses were owned by people of villainous intent? Would you still surround them with guard zone? Would you have come up with another solution? Granted that is not the case *right now*, can you guarantee it would never be an issue? If you can, aren't you pretty much overstepping the line that you clearly drew in the sand to not have staff be involved with the affairs of the players? (Isn't that happening right now?)

In what scenario would this really happen? You have a house that is completely surrounded by guard zone with NPCs nearby who will call guards at a whim. How would someone living in one of these houses be in any danger, exactly? Thieves might be the biggest concern, but again, NPCs nearby make that fairly difficult, as most thieves here would probably attest.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter who owns the houses or what they are used for. You put a guard zone around two player-owned houses which, whether you believe it or not, greatly increases the benefit to the owners (and in this instance, the customers of the vendor houses). Why go out into the wilds to shop at a vendor when I can stand in the guard zone and buy what I want? How does this staff-introduced zone not directly help the owners of these vendors?

What demands, again? And isn't this basically again imposing staff-views on players and their interactions?

Again, what Rezon is doing is great and helpful, but regardless as to whether or not it is beneficial to the server, these properties are owned by a player and can ultimately choose what to do with them. He can use them to help new players, he can use them as camps for murderers, he can use them for vendor locations, he can use them as private homes, he can fill them with cheese wheels. If these private, player-owned properties are to be seen as a resource for the server as a whole, they would have to be taken away from the custody of a player and ran by staff (or automated), otherwise it is just a player doing something nice for the server (until that player leaves or sells the houses or whatever other eventuality arises).

This can't be done from the edge of the guard zone like everywhere else?

This is true, and it is extremely important for new players to logically feel relatively safe in town from sociopathic griefing. But making the guard zone envelope two player-owned houses obviously opens up a new can of worms. I am with Scuba on this, I am sure it is a good short-term solution until a more elegant solution can be implemented, but the situation really should not become cemented in stone.

This is a huge deal. I am not going to comment anymore because honestly it has become repetitive.

I hope down the road you rethink these guard zones @Chris

Was the primary problem that the bank, where everyone gathers, too close to the guard zone line? If that's the problem, wouldn't a simple fix be to swap the bank with a shop in the middle of town? Like the provisioner shop? Does that solve the problem without guard zone changes?

But how are they killing people? Roaming EVs and such? Tricks like that are a lot harder to do the further from the guard line people are. His fix (extending the guard line) implies that distance to the line is the fix, so moving the bank will also fix it without incorporating these houses.

DO NOT SIT AFK IN TOWN

Sorry @Chris I feel this whole thing is silly. You are wasting time on a situation that common sense should take care of. I know I troll you a lot in IRC about moats and cub, mainly because I feel like the things you focus on are not the things the people want.

    Fact:
< 25% of the shard cares about the vesper guardzone
< 25% of the shard cares about the town killing

    >90% of the shard want CuB completed years ago like it was originally slated for
    >90% of the shard want Moats in place. You and I even spoke about getting them out before the house deco contest.

Let the town problem take care of itself and get done what I and everyone else want. Please and thank you.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about the town guardzone thing yet, but I can understand why its being done (outside interference from a certain pay for play shard it seems). On the other hand, the players here who have been waiting for years for CuB, moats, guildstone changes, etc. have to wait longer because of some bad actors that need to be punished, but sometimes it feels like "there's always something" keeping these things from coming to fruitiion, when they have been said to be almost completed anyway.

The people coming from the other shard(s) to cause problems for us seem to have accomplished something: Once again things are delayed and Telamon's focus has been taken off important things to deal with the riffraff. Things could be delayed indefinitely if this is a more concerted effort by these places to disrupt. Could some of these deaths been averted by players just running a Guards! spam bot in town somewhere, and not taken up the time of staff who could be working on the more important things like the patches?

@SteelyDan looks like we won't be buying an Occlo bank house :(

But on a serious note, I disagree with this change to encompass these homes in the guard zone. On the other hand, you can't just move the bank as this negatively effects these vendor owners... they paid 60mil + for a home that was near a bank and a moongate and it should remain that way. Hopefully down the road there is another logical alternative.

So, I hear the patch made dragon taming on the steps in Wind impossible now. Gotta find a new place to easily tame big lizards!
