AFK Gump Response Time Change Proposal

    Ive also been jailed when visiting the bathroom, grilling, etc

    I go afk all the time (*is the King of AFK* and was prolly jailed more than anyone when system first came out)
    Usually one is afk briefly but sometimes 1min turns into 10mins. My advice is stop the macro.

    If you bind a hotkey to a macro that does nothing (i.e. pause 500ms), you can just hit it before going AFK and it will cancel whatever macro you are currently looping. Even with a crying baby, an emergency phonecall or unexpected bowel movement, you can usually hit it before leaving the keyboard saving you from jailtime.

    If @Chris wanted us using automation to gather resources, then "system message = no metal" would work.
    Telamon disabled that because he isn't in support of recall miners/afk resource gathering/etc
    Another thing people were doing was locking fishing, cutting up boots, selling leather... all afk.
    Chris stopped that as well.

    It does nothing (absolutely nothing) to make the gaming experience better to allow longer gumps/create more afk resource gathering.

    Personal experience:
    I went to a server that had no rules about resource gathering.
    I ran the macro on 3 accounts / 24 hours a day (in rather safe spots)
    I hit their trade with over a million iron ingots and nearly a million in colored ingots and I tried selling for low enough to undercut even the cheapest player.
    ... and then their economy tanked
    ... and then a GM locked my account to talk to me
    ... and then they had a rule about afk resource gathering
    ... and then I understood why Chris was against it

    Chris is against all afk resource gathering....
    I havent tested it, but I believe there is a gump for harvesting home made sheep farms

    Hey there. Thanks for tagging me looking for my input.

    First off, I haven't read the entire thread as there were some large walls of text. It is not my intent to diminish anything that was said in them, it is just that I'm busy wrangling my 2 yr old daughter :p. Anyway, I have to agree with Jill and I think Gideon also. If you are leaving your computer longer than 2 minutes, you run the risk of getting snagged in the AFK gump. The only macro resource gathering I do at the present is lumberjacking. And I do it sparingly to feed my vendor shop. I've never gotten jailed or warned, but I do sometimes walk away for a minute or two or flip screens away.

    I believe doing what I just said is afk gathering and is jail-worthy. I would not complain if I was caught during the one or two times I do it. And I feel 2 minutes is quite generous. If Chris really wan't to stamp out afk gathering, he could make it 30 seconds or 10. I think the 2 minutes is a nice balance to let us live our lives by not staring at the screens every second, while preventing the most egregious abuse of the automated tools available.

    And it is working. The resource market is quite stable. Has been for the year + I've been here.

    Now if only plat would go back to 10k I'd be a happy man. Not because I think 8k is too low, it's just for easy conversions :D. The engineer in me loves factors of 10. Super easy to move that decimal point.

    And contrary to many positions of like minded people (as a Conservative/Libertarian), I strongly feel that...

    IT'S TIME TO SWITCH TO THE METRIC SYSTEM!

    I agree 100% on #1, but that's a separate issue IMO. I honestly think the AFK gump should be used in more areas and where it currently is used it's frequency increased, I fished deep water for 3 hours yesterday without a single gump popping

    IMO if you need to step away, just pause the macro. I actually thought 2 minutes was too long, personally i'd have made it 1 minute or even just 30 seconds.

    (in case people are wondering, noting my penchant for macros, I've only been jailed twice on UOR - once during testing where I forgot I minimized a window and another where I accidentally clicked the wrong GUMP button :p.)

    Best trick for sudden razor stoppages (and you're not using the PMM trick) is to change your razor journal color from white to neon pink or something. That way if you stop it suddenly you can always check your journal as to where you were up to :)

    Well, thanks for the tag as we all know I thoroughly enjoy hearing myself talk. But I feel as everyone drew alot of great conclusions here. In terms of merchant buys vs collection. I do believe that 100% profit margins are awesome, however it's what diminishes the economy very quickly.

    Reg buying has been brought up numerous times all with varying arguments across the board as to why it's unfair, different, the same, etc. My personal opinion is that if reg buying changed, it wouldn't personally affect my business.. That being that the last time (about two years ago) that shit really hit the fan with an argument, I decided that for the following two weeks, I was going to conduct my same business non-afk. This unfortunately turned into a nightmare for players because for about the entire period of the day and night, myself and my faithful band pack horses cleared out every single mage, provisioner, and alchy shop that exists in the game to keep up with the orders that I have so effort-fully been fulfilling over the course of now 4 years here on this lovely shard. Please keep in mind, that I do purchase AFK often, from 2 vendors in 1 shop where there are 4 in low impacting area in del. This used to be done in vesper because lets face it not many people chill in vesper, but spawn's were changed over time and this is what works best for my personal setup.

    Now don't take this like previous people did, where it's the lesser of two evils. I'm here to play, I'm a merchant. The fact that I have to sell over well over million regs to generate a million gold is not only extremely time consuming, but in retrospect to the damage that can be done to a player resource gathering and a complete profit is hands down, NOT in the same category in terms of generating income, not to mention that for every 1 million in regs i do make (roughly about 120k of each reg) that's a dump of over 3.2 million into the system.

    Gold dumps are a critical part of any economy, and though it might not put that much of a dent into the total gold across the shard, it's not only helpful, but an expense across the board.

    I could go on for days about this. But a player taking a day to run 3 recall miners could probably roughly generate a substantial amount of money without putting a single coin back into the system, thus just transferring gold to whomever is hitting the veins first. Economy is everything in these games.

    Anyone who's played donation store shards such as dfi, can contest that economy's that are floated with zero AFK rules, and the ability to buy gold and items have always failed, or not been as enjoyable. I trust Chris's direction and even admire the strength in certain avenues to keep the shard alive and prosperous.

    That being said I'm still waiting on my moat. *coughs* :)
