I wanted to write a brief, public, note as to what keeps me in UOR and playing a 21 year old game. It's time we turn the bottle and celebrate what aspects we love of UOR because the negativity just isn't helping the longevity of this server. 1) this is as close as it gets to the UO that I knew and love. I replayed my first ever UO experience by building a newbie archer and finding a snake to kill outside Britain only to die of poisoning . 2) there is no pay to play, period. I've checked out quite a few servers in the past only to realise that to really make it end game i would have to "donate " . This is 100% free and your credit card counts for jack shit 3) no damn samurai and ninjas. I logged off and quit after 2 weeks in my newbie program when I walked in Despise on OSI. What is up with that crap??? 4) dedicated seasonal events. You like farming? You like pking? There are 4 events per year where the player base is encouraged and rewarded to be concentrated in specific areas of the map. Spirit of Felucca is bound to follow. 5) longevity. The fact this shard has been around 6 years and counting speaks of itself. 6) community. We all sponsor and run player led events that benefit everyone at large. I am now giving back after having benefited from resist parties myself. Nuff said
Reason I love this shard? Constant improvement. Find a goal, set goal and work until it's done. Get bored for a bit, find another goal etc. There is just so much to do in this game its ridiculous. Thanks @merlin8666 for giving UOR a beneficial forum post!
So many reasons to love this shard!!! I'm pretty sure if this place goes away, I'll never play UO again and I don't want that!!! Thank you so much to every one past and present that keep this place running!!!!
This is the reason that I love/hate this shard/game: I will never have enough time to experience all the awesome features.
Like most everyone here, I've played a lot games that have held sway over my time and attention throughout the years and yet I still come back to this one, even after the others have been thoroughly enjoyed. There's simply nothing else like it amidst a sea of great entertainment. I think the one thing I love the most about UO is the authenticity of playstyles. Very few games ask you to be whatever we want to be, even if that means using skill combinations that "don't work" or that other people think are boring and useless. Want to be a ranger wandering around in the woods, never seeing a city until you choose to, hunting with bow and arrow, crafting your own basic leather armor, cooking yourself dinner from the meat of your latest kill over a campfire that you'll use to logout? That's fucking awesome. Might seem boring to some, but that level of in depth gameplay may be the reason why some of us started playing in the first place. I too have noticed the recent vitriol, and while it's distracting from this relic of a game that we all choose to play, the hope is that there are enough of us here to keep on passing the torch and making sure that it burns bright. Bring your own level of authenticity to this world of ours, but keep it in mind to be respectful of the other players here on UOR, and it will be around for another 6 years. This game does not exist in and of itself. It's not going to be here without us in it. For the sake of posterity, if you truly enjoy this game, please do your best to leave it better than you found it.
I love this shard because its UO the way it should be. Its the UO before EA messed it up. Its UO where crafters can make a living and what you craft is valued. One doesn't have to deal with custom housing, which can ruin the landscape with some monstrous designs. You can play your way. You decide what you want to accomplish, when and how. This is the essence of this 21 year old game, something that no game since has done. The development team has got it right and whenever an improvement is released, it has been well thought out and benefits the community. Been here over two years and plan to stay.
This post warms my soul as much as the message in which I am here, well, the game itself! It's a miracle that after many years we play this game! long life UOR!!!
I came for the chance to relive being a 13 year old, ruining my education with UO. I stay for the forum memes. on a more serious note. the seasonal events, custom content and the community are my main reasons I am playing here.
The players, the community, the passion, the joy, the beefs, the bros, the forums, the carefully curated attention spent on this place, Chris' unwavering vision, the lols, the excitement, the panic, the fat stacks of cheddar, the cloak and dagger shit, the jokes, the fact I've been playing as long as I have and still learn something new every day, the hidden gems, the simplicity & the complexity, those random what the fuck moments, THOSE random what the fuck moments, the possibilities, navigating limitations, watching people join and make something out of nothing, the ingenuity of the players, the events, the nostalgia & knowing your part of a special club of people that KNOW we got something amazing here and the pride that comes with it.
I'm not sure why but your post makes me think of Ol' Purpley. Lol, a random spawning, revered by the community and made permanent by staff. @RavenMagi
This shard was built off of the 'perfect' era of UO. In the last few months, I've relived several moments of my youth - some of which were exhilarating and some frustrating, and I cherish them all. Although some people complain about the population, for me it's a relative sweet spot. The population is small enough where there are plenty of places to go in the game that doesn't feel crowded, however there's enough people here (and enough PK's) where the element of danger still exists. I NEVER though I would play this game again until a few months ago, and this came entirely on a whim. I haven't even THOUGHT about UO in well over a decade, but somehow I accidentally stumbled across some UO:R videos on youtube which tickled my nostalgia. 3-4 days later I started playing and wondering why I hadn't considered finding this place years ago. This thread is very refreshing, as I've seen quite a fair amount of doom n' gloom on several other threads recently. It's good to take a little bit of time to appreciate what's been built for us, even if you don't always consider it '.. Perfected' yourself.
I've just started playing here and am enjoying reliving the memories from 15-20 years ago. Community so far has been very helpful and friendly. So much to do and accomplish that I am having a hard time prioritizing it all. I look forward to partaking in the events. Glad I stumbled onto this shard, tried a few others and they all lacked something major. This feels like a great spot to me.
