Admins : What do you think about setting up a discord channel?

I really think this needs to be re-visited. Times are changing. We aren't running around using ICQ anymore... I think it's time we laid irc to rest and transitioned to Discord. I don't even log into IRC anymore.

I understand moderators can't control what games any particular user is listed as currently playing. Not one person here is solely playing UO, or UOR either. Seeing that someone is playing WOW isn't going to give me the urge to join them. Discord is powerful, you can make it a rule on Discord that people can't advertise for other servers, just like it is on irc.

Nothing stopping anybody from using Discord set it up, use it, have a good time but why does it need to be sanctioned by uor? are you just looking for another communication method with staff?

^ I agree. Create a server with open access, give a few people 'moderater' access give Chris tman and Sammy admin access if they want it. Chris has already explained why he won't set it up(valid reasons from his pov) but that doesn't mean the community can't.


I'm just scared of what the music bot might play.

There are a few discord channels for UOR that are absolutely packed. At this point the open P'S channel has about 70 people, and pretty much multiple people alert and active to respond 24/7.

I am in I think 8 channels 100% UOR related, two of which are extremely active. There are so many people who play, especially on the weekends it's pretty crazy having 20 or more active in voice at any given time.

Honestly nobody has went out of their way to disrespect the channels. We keep the P'S lounge hopefully around pg-13 and it's about half social, a quarter of it is helpful, then the rest is grouping/connecting in game and abusing the .gif bot.

Some channels I'm in would certainly be closer to more R rated at times, but nobody has spammed nudes or posted anything not safe for work or life regarding pictures and movies and stuff. And never seen anyone be overall graphic regarding sexual context, and certainly nobody has been racist or hateful or anything.

There may be a fight club channel where at one point it was gonna replace the old #UORPVP IRC channel, but basically has always been healthy respectful conflict at worst and typically just like 50 pvpers who bullshit around and a few group up to kill one another a few times day. If such a place did exist there would probably be the two derper groups, the remainder of the major pk groups half of factions, the antipk/vigilante forces, bunch of new faces who I have know no clue who they are in game or elsewhere but learning from some pros how to get good... If it was to exist that's probably how it would look.

But the channels are quite vulnerable to trolling and don't post links/invites to channels on forums or anywhere search engines will pick them up, bots will invade open channels with public invites and then it will have to be locked down or recreated to solve it. Also it's probably best to just have people able to ghost the channels and be seen, but have to be accepted to view all the channels, use voice, see users etc. It's certainly a lot more to moderate and certainly more vulnerable to trolling than IRC ,. But it's always way way way more active and a hell of a lot of fun. I enjoy pretty much all aspects and the different options and themes to each room.

Anyway tl;dr Discord needs to be closed off a bit to be protected and remain in the spirit of your social structure. And UOR discords are already thriving and way more popular and active then IRC has been in years. Moderating and allowing IRC/Forum pvp into an open discord channel would be a nightmare. I can't imagine how far things would go with unlimited options to record, upload, meme, file transfers, edit, bot, hook your way through public character assassinations and ad hominem attacks. And some people have spent years logging in IRC to troll certain people, jeez I can't imagine if the stalkers and trolls had public access without any permissions limited or assigned restrictions upon entering. Mods have to eat supper and sleep at some points

Also you can make a bot display IRC channels and that your bot can use to speak to IRC channels. I go for weeks without opening IRC and never am left out of the loop hah.

Only started playing again because of the content inside UO:R discord channels. Text IRC can only get people so excited about pixels.

Seems like such a huge boon to take advantage of especially if there's a general UO:R discord to unite player discussion under one umbrella.

Maybe a sticky post advertising official discords for those that want to welcome open access channels.

On the other hand, if there's no an unofficial official discord, I can set it up.

My long winded reply wasn't against an UOR discord. There are some insanely large channels out there that do work, but it would just need some restrictions in play.

Discord is a great software and the couple of trolls and the handful of rages could be handled easily enough. And the UOR community has more than knowledgeable people for this if mods and staff didn't want to set it up. But in the meantime other than having the title official discord of UOR, it sort of already exists and is where everyone is already. But getting the word to new faces who may not be aware may hold some people back before meeting all the people in the game. Our old IRC links you to discord in the message of the day.

I prefer to keep just a irc channel as the renaissance main room... you have PVG and PS disco chanel for example if you need informations and links.. for me discord is more for intimacy chat.. I could imagine people raging at a uor disco channel without any staff around to block and ban the guy... this could be harmful to the community sanity.

This already happens with the VPN guy. Except he can hang around for quite a while before someone with the ability to kick comes around.

Pretty sure on discord, owners can filter out certain words and makes things much more automated. But VPN guy has been around for a couple years so he should be gone at anytime...

I dont mind it staying IRC, but I know discord would be great imo. Much better to access through phone app as when i tried IRC app, anytime I lost service it would kick me then auto sign me back in and I know that fills up IRC chat with so and so quit, so and so joined... I knew that was annoying to everyone else so I got rid of the app.

I use discord much more and just out everyone I talk to has it so I dont go on IRC nearly as much as I use to. Just no need when discord is my dominant chat.

Would I vote for a uor discord chat ran by staff, of course. Music bot can be ignored with a couple buttons. But it really has no bearing on me if it doesn't switch. I'm just not much of a IRC user anymore unless I need to locate someone on it for a trade.

There has been a UOR discord channel since January 2016 however it was never really used for various reasons
I believe @Blaise started it... @Chris even posted in it years ago and of course reviewed it back then... the pluses and minuses etc

When we tried it, it was junk. To compare that to today is an abortion of logic.

That having been said, I still prefer IRC and believe all the bells and whistles of other stuff just detracts from actually playing the game. Given the "activity" on all these various clients, I'd say its true.

In my country we usually say: you doesnt change a winner team. In mine opinion, Renaissance is winning in the way it is... Even if RAM memory of my macbook would say thanks. I think this game is all about atmosthere... UOR is a island for those who are running away from this hiperconected new shit. Best thing on irc is that you dont receive any message when you are offline. You simply doesnt exist. But discord, no... you are always receiving notifications on your cell phone or when you turn the app on..

FWIW you can disable notifications in discord, and even prevent PMs from other people in the channel. Just provides a lot more option.

I would love to use Disco for UO:R. I might actually play with other people... maybe.

I don't use IRC either. Client I used was a bit to buggy. Web client works fine but for some reason it misses posts. Often I end up confused as people reply something I can't see. So I shut it off.

It's open? A non-guildy like me can join? I will look for it.
