    Tree Huggers Unite!,

I'm still a newbie on the shard and just had a couple of questions about farming for oak. With all the cool new oak items, I thought I would farm for an hour. After cutting down about 3/4 of all the trees surrounding the greater Yew Suburbs I ended up with about 110 oak boards. As a GM in lumberjacking, I thought the drop rate might be better. To add insult to my blistering hands, I then tried to build a Church Pew and failed (which the odds said I would), losing a meaningful % of the mats. On this particular toon (FixIt) I am GM tailor, carp, tinker, and lumberjacker.

So the question: given the oak board items seem to be a nice enhancement from OSI's era (kudos to Telamon and Chris), do you think the drop rate is right for oak boards? Also, it does not seem to matter if you farm oak trees or regular? Maybe you could have a little bonus to oak trees?

Thanks all. You have an amazing community here. Lots of fun, just trying to suggest how we might have a little more fun without throwing off the carefully calibrated economy. I don't think it would if you increased the drop rate on oak boards a bit in "celebration" of all the new oak items.

BTW I felt this was more of an era conversation than a trade post, but I could be wrong. Apologies if I posted in the forum (per my comment about being a newbie still) :)

    Cheers,
    Tyrus/FixIt

Nice post Tyrus! I think you'll find a mix of responses to your thoughts and/or no replies at all. The new craftables are far too new to make any assumptions.

The factors of low drop rate and high fail rate means you should price them right. These new crafted items are going for 3-10k. One thing is certain is that if you make the resources for these more plentiful, then you're not going to be able to sell for that much.

As a vendor are you going to want to sell these new benches for 300 gold or 3000?

Remember that the focus of this shard is perfection which includes a real economy where people can sell resources and crafted items for stable prices.

For the "solo" gamer who wants to make all their own things this might be a frustration, but I'm sure any body who enjoys playing the vendor roles will tell you there's nothing worse than a bloated market.

Also, you should note -- Oak boards are not actually yielded from oak trees in the game. The trees are simply a representation of an underlying grid system which handles all resources. Like rarer ores, oak is spawned randomly throughout the world. The type of tree does not matter, however once you find a location that yields oak it will always yield oak.

The low drop rate that you were seeing was because you weren't targeting the grid locations that yield oak. My recommendation is to mark spots that yield oak on UOAM, or with runes, so that you can keep track of the locations -- this way you can focus on these locations when you are looking to collect oak.

Welcome to the shard, and good luck!

    Good points, Jupiter!

For me, indeed I do like to craft my own items, but I also love to see people visit my vendors. The irony for me is, in 1/3 of the time I can farm 2x or 3x the gold using my Provo/Mage and buy the ladder, boat, or church pews. So if you look at the economy in it's entirety, the core crafter actually is not one to be a pulling down the cost of goods sold. The opportunity cost delta is meaningful.

So then you say well "geez Tyrus you lazy bastard suck it up and just farm those oak". Look you "newbie Tyrus the threat of a timely PK to your gold farming provo mage is the reward for filling your bank box every other hour". The funny thing is my defenseless, and angelic karma filled crafter, has been PK'ed far more than my provo/mage who lives deep in red patrolled dungeons. Kudos' to the smart chap who hovers as a blue in his house just outside the OC limits, to quickly turn to to his red toon and kill the non-young looking to make a buck out there. Now killing my three pack llamas for sport was a low brow move, but I do respect a good PK'er.

So ya I do see your point, it's not a clear answer, but I don't think we would be harming the economy too much by bumping up that drop rate a bit.

Ah great idea Corruption, I thought the generator was more random vs. a true grid. Very good to know, that will resolve my meaningless gripe. Thanks for sharing!

Nice ty! I'm glad corruption's knowledge helped.

Your post made me want to call you Dalavar_Oakmage! "Cost delta" that's totally vocabulary I'd expect Dalavar to use.

Also I've picked up a lot of oak near paws when I was GMing lumber jacking. If you'd like to set up a home there or if you would like to use one of our vacancies let me know. I can co-own you so you can lock down your daily toil.
