With all the awesome new stuff being added to the shard I can't quite get over the fact UOR is lacking something I loved during the days of Renaissance: Gardening.
Gardening was a great way for players with little to no time available to be able to do something in UO, when you were only able to log in a few minutes for a day gardening was a great way to spend some of your time to create cool items.

For those of you who do not know, gardening in UO was introduced later in Renaissance and allowed for a whole lot of new deco options to become available to players.

The basic principle of gardening was pretty simple:

    • Kill a monster and recover a seed
    • Buy a bowl and fill it with dirt/fertile dirt
    • Plant the seed in the bowl
    • Over the next few days ensure the plant is healthy, watered and strong

After 5-6 days, it was possible to cross pollinate plants, allowing for new/rare seeds to be produced.

At the end of the process (9 days), the player would usually get a new seed, or a decorative plant which could be locked down in their house.

    e.g.

    Ferns

    Flowers

I understand that the current gardening system has a lot of flaws and issues - especially around the case of resouces such as "Orange Petals" which would completely change PvP (Poison immunity), so I would not expect it to be put in place as it was currently, but I believe a revamped version (Purely cosmetic with no *neon* plants) for the shard would be an awesome addition.

I have also missed this on the server. I enjoyed gardening and would love to see it implemented here. Hopefully this is something that enough people will get behind to make it worth it in the future.

Plants are doled out as platinum rewards and events, which I find sufficient.

I always enjoyed the vines for deco. I believe they came from gardening? I forget it's been so long.

Alex is correct, however it is worth noting that all the reward plants are the "Potted" variety, plants grown via gardening are quite different and allow for different hues.

Also there's a large amount of satisfaction from growining your own plants, compared to just buying them!

Well plants currently unavailable remain a valuable resource for a future reward pool of new rares.

I feel as though there are enough rewards available from platinum/holidays that we do not have to "reserve" any, and we are definitely not running out of rare items in the world! Gardening allows the potential for players to create their own rares, it's not just about new items, it's about facilitating a new playstyle and furthering the levels of player interaction.

Gardening will also create new markets for items such as seeds, fertile dirt and potion kegs. I feel that most players gloss over gardening and see only the rewards/rares, this is not the case; Gardening allows for a new playstyle which is suited for players that do not have a lot of time, when I initially started gardening back in the 2000's my only intention was for the rare deco at the end, as I progressed I found that just maintaining the plants and planting new seeds was much more enjoyable than the end result.

Inhibiting an entire system which promotes player interaction purely based off the future rewards does not seem like a pragmatic solution, I would hope that players understand it isn't the rewards/rares I'm hoping to see ingame - but rather the actual gardening gameplay.

I like it. Adding era-related end game content is always a good idea. Just make sure rewards/results aren't anything but decoration.

Regarding the plat-rewards plants, just leave them out of the gardening reward list. Maybe leaving potted plants for plat rewards and having vines and other loose plants as gardening rewards.

It's been years since I've seen these and would enjoy having them here as a side project =P

The only thing is, the colours....don't know if I'd like em or hate seeing them here
    *shrugs*
The normal hues, no issue there, but I can remember spending an awful lot of time cross breeding the plants for specific colours/seeds

Agree. Normal colors only. Nothing crazy.

This has been discussed in depth in the past in the Dev forum. There is desire and intention to Perfect(tm) it for UOR standards as far as I understand it. By that I mean no product of gardening will impact PvP (some of the flower petals could be used to gain a temporary buff like poison resistance, etc) and no bright neon colored plants will be possible.
I wouldn't hold your breath for the update but at least be content knowing it is on the table for UOR, as far as I know (which isn't really as far as some might think).

There were red petals that allowed you to set th ink in any books written, those would be nice to see and use, but can't recall if it was a specific plant, luck of the draw, or just random chance from cross breeding.

Agree, I'd like to see them used for things like permanent books and potentially even skin (tribal) paints that wear off over time but allow for more RP in appearance.

While we're at it and just to make people gasp and yell "TRAMMEL", they could be used to create UOR approved 'paint colors' for application to metal armor....

Blaise, I like the idea of tribal paint (do we even have tribal savages here or do I need to explore more?), but the metal armour.....hoping it was sarcasm =P

Of all the colored Trammie shit here, I find it strange that people get so up in arms about something that actually was quite common when people wore metal armor. It's called paint. We've been using it for thousands of years and yes, people painted their armor and shields historically. lol

I sincerely hope it's sarcasm when people complain about the possibility of a mirror of real medieval times things like painting armor.

If we could get paint for armor, and keep it to realistic colors and style, that would be sweet. Having a bunch of Woad raiders run around, as an RP attack group, would be just the bees knees.

Exactly..I don't mean like neon pink but rather subtle tones like earth tones and such (as one might expect to make from plants).

I like the idea of plants. Especially the thorn aspect. Also the option to do one more thing. FurtherI think there could be a plant BOD system!

Chris maybe you could start your first legitamite UO skill: Gardening. One could passively gain the skill by harvesting wild seeds in the forest swamps and deserts. Also gain skill through the act of planting and watering.

Please please please don't mess with the PvP system. Also please please please no neon trammel f*** all.

I miss staining from OSI sometimes used plant clippings and the cooking skill to make pretty dyes. Some of them were garish but a lot were nice especially the darker colors. You can probably find them under dyes/staining on stratics if you wanted to look at them.
