Only if your a PK(Player killer) I believe. Otherwise you become a ghost and rise from your corpse, you can't interact with the world(But can walk through doors freely) and must find a healer(NPC or PC) to ressurect you. Then you need to travel back to your corpse to grab your stuff(Or the bank/house for a backup stock). It pays to have a few friends and be careful how deep you go alone. Some stuff is blessed or newbified so that it comes with you when you ressurect, but most stuff will stay with your dead body. PCs and even some monster(mostly humanoids) will pick through your corpse given the chance, so not everything may be there when you get back.
Depends on the PK style tbh. Some don't loot anything, some loot selectively. Some clean loot you. Just gotta be careful if you come back with more loot.
You also lose fame. After you die, the fate of your belongings depends on the adventuring/killing/stealing players nearby and/or on the monsters nearby. If you're alone, it's good to rely on stealth or an orc mask (green one), should you go to the orc caves, as orcs won't attack you (but don't attack them while wearing a mask!)...
This is all why UO is the most hardcore MMO when it comes to death. You'd have a riot ensuing in any current MMO if they implemented losing your items upon death. The world now is so carebear it's hilarious. UO FTW.
You play Vanilla WoW? I remember when they had lvl 45 guards in Booty Bay and you could climb to the roof of buildings with ranged chars and attack people trying to return quests and such. People cried, the rooftops access was removed and they put in lvl 60 elite guards that started following you into the water... They take all the fun out of the games and replace it with a repetitive grind. But millions of people still actually pay to play wow. By my estimates we are no better than lab rats. Running in a wheel in chase of the endorphin rush that comes from looting an item with 2% stat bonus compared to your previous one.
Indeed I did play vanilla wow, and what I take from that experience is just how weak it is compared to UO's mechanics. Sure, the graphics might be outdated but the risk vs reward system in place here is top notch.
Dead on. I gave up on UO years ago. Official server UO was just bad. I also got tired of the "free" shards because they were either dead, controlled by a few guilds of elite fucktards, or not FREE as advertised. I did the math and realized that in order for it to be done well, it would require too much effort and no one would want to do it for free. If they want to get paid for their efforts they will have to cater to the mass population and eventually implement rules to protect character items which translates to user time and money investment. Or you were going to have to be content with dead free shards. Hell my buddy even ran his own private server for a bit since we couldn't find any stable ones. But in the end I sat in a corner and cried for a bit and gave up on UO for almost ever. The quality of the server you get here is unbelievable. Player base is really cool and active enough in every field of game play to provide player interaction. I have run into at least a dozen people who like myself and my friends actually started playing without a forum account until they needed to make trades. The only thing that is missing here from the old days is people advertising their crap at the bank. You need a forum account or irc access for that. Other than that, everything that is missing is stuff you wanted gone like all the crap you had to pull up along with fish when fishing, and the custom things added are just super awesome. I am thankful every time I log in successfully and see that the server is still up
I second your sentiments @Halabinder! I also miss the advertising at WBB for items and tames. Its seemed like a real marketplace. But hey, *some* stuff has to change, and the forum/IRC is just too good to not use.
@Lord Krake - I was buying my very first actual Sony disckman as people were advertising their wares at WBB. Telling people to go advertise at WBB today would be like telling the old me that one day I would be able to store all of my music collection on a device the size of a pack of smokes. In both cases you would get asked to check to ensure you're not missing any marbles.
I constantly return to this thread, and every time I'm disturbed to see such false answers to this young person's sincere question: "... what happens when you die?" My dear youngster - I see that you are young because tis a well known answer -, upon death you come to Valhalla where there are lots of vikings drinking mead. *phew* There, got it out of me.
@jze I assumed your question was answered in the first couple of posts. When any player dies, most if not all their items remain on their dead body and can be looted by that player or anyone else who happens to be by. Your starter clothing for example will remain in your bag when you resurrect. If there is more info you need please be specific.
