I'm in Project Sanctuary and I've encountered an issue. I meet prospective and new members in game, but if they do not have IRC I will usually not be able to get in touch with them again. With multiple accounts it makes it even more difficult to get ahold of them. In game guild-chat is unfortunately not effective. Although a lot of UO players have used IRC before, there are still a good amount of people that haven't used IRC, and frankly IRC is not that newbie friendly. I know we have the flash IRC on the main page, but would it be possible to put something more bold for [young] players when logging in. Perhaps upon login for [young] players we could we have pop-up that directs them to the flash IRC, or an easy IRC program like Nettalk, with some simple step to step images/guides on how to install and join our channel. The existing IRC link in the [profile page seems too hidden. http://www.ntalk.de/Nettalk/en/
I have a macro that i frequently run in occlo saying to join , type [news , and hit the link at top. Its much longer winded in the macro but thats the point.
2 months ago when I first joined I copy and pasted irc server info from main website in mIRC an it sent me to a dead channel with no one else there. This was after checking the chat drop down from Uo client. I was pleased there was a global chat but unfortunately only person in there Was me. It was weeks later I found out about UoRenaissance. Com/irc url that launches the IRC web version; the only uor irc I have been able to get to work. That is my experience I don't know about others but I believe the web version needs to be publicized more
Sadly, global chat was turned off in game. That was actually fun and I did in fact use it briefly when it was enabled. Can we get an alternate thread of how to get vets OUT of IRC and into Game/Guild Chat/Etc? I'm terribly guilty of this myself and despite some nonbelievers, I do actually play in the very brief windows of time I have at HOME to play the game. I think one thing that will help such a concept along is the guild stone revamp with Alliances and Alliance chat. This has been promised since Beta and I try not to pester about it, but it would be a boon to the shard.
What if a scribe were to make a book that explained how to join IRC, then your channel? We could copy it and make it easy to pass out.
Does someone have an idea why in mIRC the server info posted on main site led me to a blank channel? I remember another noobie at the time told me that happened to them as well so I know it wasn't just me.. he asked about where a general chat was and at the time I knew of none .. i figured the irc was an abandoned idea and the website was just out of date
It's been fixed -- the bug that did this to you since then. But #UOR used to be the main channel until ppl who prevent us from having nice things did that. xD
Good thread Mike! Your dedication to Project Sanctuary these past few months has been a great help to me and the whole server! I thoroughly agree that the IRC link needs to be emphasized, visually, not only on the main page, but on the FORUM page too. The main IRC link has worked for me; I havent used mIRC yet but I do know it works for people. Instructions on how to install and get into the Ren channel are needed. I also think its an issue of playstyle. Some players simply dont want to be connected to others "outside the UO world", for a more immersive experience. I am guilty of this when it comes to voice chat, but I have extended my boundaries recently due to necessity. Then there are new players who are just trying this shard out/game out, who simply dont think its worth it to try an manage and very active chat program, and play the game, and read the forums, and pay attention to in game announcement. Sheesh! We here at UOR are VERY good with communication, and really there is only so much we can do for new players on that front. If they want to join up with the living community, great! If they dont, but they still wanna play here, great! Its really up to them as to how involved they get with our out-of-game community. I recall hearing something while playing EVE that really hit home. Someone had said, about the community, "There are people here who play this game like its a single player game, and not an MMO. They are missing out on the primary element of a game like this; the other people. If they [continue] to treat this game like a single player game, they will be sorely upset when we come and destroy their fleet. This is not a single player game." So obviously a few things in there dont apply to UO, but the concept is the same. If there are players here who wanna treat this game like a single player game, while we, the active community, are doing our damn best to communicate events and what have you, on MULTIPLE levels, then those players are just missing out. TL/DR version = We have multiple ways to communicate to new players. If they dont engage, its not our fault. You guys are cool.
Hanging on IRC while playing uo on my dual screen is awesome, I like reading storites and stuff of the fellow players while Im crafting/hunting. The flash IRC is very noob-friendly. Click on it, pick your username and youre connected. That link should be bolded RED because let's face it, IRC is the modern britain bank!
This actually is a really good idea Vlar. Brief explanation of how IRC really is the brit bank and link to a guide. I also like the global chat option, but I know it was abused. You guys think there's anyway around that?
