I've seen a lot of forges and anvils placed conveniently adjacent to people's mining homes. Are these preexisting? or can I place them outside my house?

These are preexisting staff placed structures. Players are unable to place anything outside of their house boundaries.

They really shouldn't even exist. They were placed as a matter of convenience to the players in Beta and beyond, when housing wasn't common near the mines. I have spoken out about desire for their removal in the past but many things that take away privilege gain little support.

Yes, Gideon, I remember on some of OSI servers, Cove had forges and anvils, and on others they weren't there. Forges placed along mountains weren't the only differences. There were lot of small details and a few large ones which varied on servers.
So Blaise, don't think it a matter of privilege at all. More a matter of what needs fixed first, and if the staff even wants to remove them. Everything staff does eats up that precious commodity, Time. and geeesh, oh my, staff has lives in real too. :D

It would take all of 3 seconds for staff to remove any specific placement. Let's not pretend like it's a chore to [remove something.

They shouldn't exist in the excess they do here.

And how many houses right next to a forge have a forge add on?

Pretty much every single one I see.

I would say, as a service to the community, you should page Help and list the coordinates of any forge and anvil that is redundant or excessive (nearly all of them now).
I'm not sure staff will greatly appreciate it but I think of them in the same way I think about guild stones sitting there in a field. Does not belong.

Most of these items were placed long ago by cross referencing the items found in the old UO Demo code. A few were arbitrary but most of them were placed in spots that I remembered from Baja on OSI or that we saw in the UO Demo.

You are welcome to contact me anytime with suggestions or concerns about their locations.

Bring back CY Lockdown Deeds... I don't want any fancy recall spot. I just want to move my smithy outdoors... It heats up the house something awful
