This could be an opt in system for both murders, detectives and jurors. I've seen similar things in other games and think it could be adapted well to encourage anti-pks.

In case you were unaware, the title of a player with Forensic Evaluation is “Detective”. Detect Hidden gives the title “Scout”.

A player uses Forensic Evaluation on a corpse. If the target corpse was the result of a murder for which the victim reported, the detective adds the name of the murderer and victim to a little book/log(crafted by scribes or whatever). The detective can collect multiple 'counts' on a person. If you get murdered, contact a detective to investigate the crime so that he can hopefully get revenge for you.

If the Detective manages to kill a murder whose name is in his detective's log, he can send that murderer to trial by using Forensic Evaluation on the murderer's corpse. If you kill a murderer, contact a detective and maybe he will be able to send the murderer to trial.

Players who are online and have opted into the system receive a gump asking if they are available to serve on the trial. The first few players(five or so, some odd number to break ties) to respond get teleported to the Yew courtroom where the trial takes place(maybe an IRC message too, if that's feasible, in case you're alt-tabbed or something). The detective and the defendant murderer each get a few moments to speak their case. The detective can provide the list of victims by this murderer as evidence.

The jurors decide if the defendant is guilty or not guilty. Jurors receive compensation, maybe a platinum coin. Something to encourage participation.

Maybe the jurors will believe the murderers story that he was simply defending his spawn or the victims of his murders were griefing and needed to be killed. Maybe the defendant is a well known PK and deserves to be found guilty. Maybe the defendant offered a bribe to one or more jurors to find him Not Guilty. Maybe the jurors just like the defendants personality. Maybe the defendant threatened to hunt them down if they find him guilty. Maybe the jurors don't particularly like the defendants victims and are happy to help the defendant continue murdering those particular individuals(they were SL alts, fuck those guys am I right). Maybe the detective threatened/muscled the jurors into compliance. The system can be corrupt and its better that way because it can provide drama and controversy which can encourage attempts at retribution or for the detective to try to get the defendant on trial again for another chance at justice.

If the defendant is found not guilty, his short terms counts are wiped and maybe his long terms are reduced. Maybe it's just the counts associated with the murders that the detective gathered evidence on, or maybe its all of his counts. This can be adjusted for balance, just a placeholder suggestion. Something to encourage participation.

If the defendant is found guilty, the detective gets platinum(or some reward) based on how many 'counts' he collected on that murderer. Again, I don't know what actual value would be balanced but the general idea is there. Maybe nothing bad happens to the defendant, as he might already be in stat loss and we want to encourage participation, but maybe he has to sit in the Yew jails for a little bit of time just for flavor points. People can come by and point and laugh at him like people definitely did to the convicted back in the day. Could the defendant choose to plead guilty and receive a conviction but a reduced penalty or something?

Maybe the defendant can apply for counsel to speak his case for him. He can choose someone he knows and pay them on his own accord, or he can choose to apply for free counsel chosen in the same way the jurors are chosen, a random player that applied to be chosen for that task. The counselor could be rewarded with a plat if his defendant wins. He could also try to ruin his defendant's case and the defendant could get mad and fire him, providing due hilarity for all witnesses.

And remember, this could easily just be an opt-in system for players that want it. It could also just be temporary or an on and off kind of thing. “The yew courts are in operation for the next (x amount of time) and are paying (x value) for the deliverance of justice”. An opportunity for reds to go out and PK and if they die, they have a chance to get their short terms wiped. Also an opportunity for anti-pks to go out there and deliver some sweet justice and get paid for doing it. Most importantly, who doesn't love some courtroom drama that spills out into the streets? I would love to see some of that.

Thanks for reading, and thanks to everyone who helped me take a cool picture of the courtroom.

P.S.: Sorry SL guys, just a convenient example :)
