I find it unlikely that you didn't have funds in your bank to stable the creature, but that's a possibility as well.
did the stable master look suspicious when you turned in the mare? who knows what could happen during Halloween could have been an undead stable master who does mare trafficking you gotta always look them in the eyes when turning your beloved pets in never trust anyone

I did come across the bonded nightmare called Dark. He was not stabled...but hanging out behind the healers building in Wind. He had gone wild.
No I did not tame him....he caught me unawares and attacked and killed me. By the time I got back to the area to try and loot my body, he had disappeared.
