Can anyone list out the pros and cons of each? I'm thinking about getting into battle mining but I'm a little confused on which way to go with. Thank you.

    Gargoyle Pickaxes Pros
    Can be used anywhere.
Spawn elementals which give gold and gems in addition to ore
Pickaxes have more charges than gargoyle shovels
    Cons
Elementals are more difficult to kill
The elemental you pull is dependent on the ore vein you hit

    Golem Shovels Pros

Spawn golems which have a chance for a statue drop. Can determine which ore you get based on shovel used. Are much faster to kill vs ore elementals.

    Cons
No gems or gold like elementals.
Can only be used in golem caves
Shovels have less charges vs pickaxes

You want to go with golem shovels. It is much faster and you have a chance for the high end statue drop.

Only thing I would add is pick axes dont spawn anything a large percentage of the time. Some days you might get 5-6 elementals out of a vein, some days you'll get 1. The shovel on the other hand almost always spawns atleast 1 and sometimes 2 golems at a time so you have to be a little more prepared. But I agree with bart, shovels definitely seem the way to go since any character can use a shovel and you stock up the ore very fast.

To add to what the others have said, gargoyle pickaxes are the only way to get ore for stone, sandstone, and marble ingots. Gargoyle shovels to my knowledge never come in those types.

Also, the pickaxes are cheaper than shovels.

I think I read that the shovels don't require any mining skill to use?

I havent gotten any of the stone crafting stuff from my shovels newme..only normal ore.

Correct Rag, anybody can use a shovel with no mining skill necessary.

IMO that should totally be changed. No mining skill.... makes no sense.

Not officially, but wherever I see gloves, I assume shovels. That's how it's been working for me anyway.
