Thinking about giving the server a try. What kind of character is best to make to get started here and how long will it take to get it up and going to 7x?
Welcome to UO Renaissance tpopcaz. Depending on the character you choose and the free time that you have it can take a few days to a week to develop a good character. There is also a great deal of things to do before you have a full developed character.
Welcome and please stay a while! If you don't mind the resource grind (lumber, ore, hides, etc.) It is very lucrative here. People are buying it all the time, and not just as a kind gesture. Resources are in high demand thanks to the anti afk systems. If you're more into bashing baddites for gold then a bard warrior is a good way to go. I'd recommend peace and Provo to start; you can drop one of them later. The peace skill actually "freezes" monsters temporarily here, which is great if you don't have 2 monsters to Provo., and remember to keep hides. They sell for about 10-12 gold per hide.
A Peace Dexxer could be 7x in a day or two, if you have the bandages and the know-how. I started as a Provo-Mage. Slightly more difficult to macro (provoke is difficulty based here), but I was farming mid-level monsters after 24 hours.
Another option is to work up fishing to GM and get a boat for this: May I Fish? tournament. The prizes are sure to be great and even if you don't win a prize you can make some good money with all the other stuff you fish up. I'd recommend making a fighter character while macroing fishing so that you have something that can kill the sea creatures.
