How do I tell damage?

So this may be a stupid question I have a lot. But on my status screen there is a icon for damage that never changes no matter what I equip. Is there anyway to tell?
And is there a chart for which types of axes and swords do the most damage? Thanks!

First off do yourself a favour and go to Razor and under the options tab check Use Pre-AOS status window.
