Hello all! I just joined the UOR server (thanks to a post on Reddit) and thus far am enjoying it, but wanted to see if an idea of mine would be feasible.

A little history - I played on the Atlantic server back in the day, starting shortly after Beta ended and went for around 10 or so years. I was very much into the whole RP scene and enjoyed being one of the more competitive PVPers of the time. Over time though I felt that PVP, although interesting and certainly much more engaging within the RP community, wasn't enough to keep my interest after so many years, and I ended up opening a library.

Now, this was not the typical rune library, which serves a tremendous purpose, but a library in a more classic sense. I traveled around in search of any and all player-made books, chronicled events and history of the shard and the community and ended up with hundreds of books that overall told many stories of the shard and the players within. Some of the books I had became somewhat valuable to some members of the shard due to their actions being chronicled by other people, both for posterity and/or notoriety. My main regret now is that all of those stories are gone at this point, as I have been away for many years.

The UOR server has been around for awhile, certainly long enough for some notable events and happenings to have occurred, and there seems to be plenty of players at any given time so there are undoubtedly many stories waiting to be unearthed and told. It would bring me a great amount of joy to be able to walk these lands and gather any and all stories and ultimately create a new library for any/all players to enjoy, as well as chronicle the history that can be found and hopefully preserve the moments that encapsulate today and tomorrow for the future.

So my question is... is this a feasible goal/purpose? I have forgotten a great deal of the game since I left long ago, and the UOR server is a much different beast than the OSI server I once played on. The primary thing I would ultimately need is a decent-sized house, but not just any house, it needs to be in a relatively good/safe location. Is it possible to place such houses anymore or, with one house per character, are all the good spots already taken? If they are taken, what, on average, would a price be for such a location? (EDIT): for clarification, a house on Moonglow would be an excellent example of a good/safe location, not a place like the swamps north of Trinsic or Dagger Isle.

Real-estate aside, a library is a communal effort in the sense that other players would need to be willing to share books and/or stories with me, or perhaps point me in the right direction for some of them; how willing would the player community as it stands today be in helping with such a task? I would not ask for much, just player-made books or stories that I can chronicle myself.

A big issue is being able to copy/paste books and/or seal them. When I had my library on Atlantic, I could make copies of books using inscription - does that exist here? I could also seal the pages with a red leaf which prevented anyone from changing the text. Is there anything like that here as well? If it is relatively easy to make copies of books, sealing pages is not such a big issue since I always keep multiple copies of each book on hand for backups in case of defacement or loss.

With all that said and asked, I look forward to playing on UOR!

You can make copies of books using inscription but you cannot seal the pages. There is a trick, however, that allows people to read books in a public house and not edit them if the books are placed behind a locked down counter. You might have to play around with it a little bit but it works. Otherwise, a public library will undoubtedly be vandalized by some sad 30 year old who still operates at a 12 year old level.

When you get your library running, feel free to contact me. I have access to a few private libraries from which you can copy the books.

@PaddyOBrien knows for sure how to make the books readable but not editable, I believe.

Thanks for the information Alice, and when I get more settled/established I will definitely take you up on that offer! I just love rummaging through private libraries (well, not just private, public ones too).

Hi there, i was actually thinking about that the other day, how it would be cool to do. I definitely know how to set one up, we just need a good location. I have plenty of player written books to donate as well. Catch me in irc sometime and id be glad to help(Hawkins in irc). And welcome to UOR fellow Atlantic-an!

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

It looks like people would be willing to share books and stories, which is awesome. I am going to need to spend some time making money and working up a couple characters, but my big focus next will be to find a suitable house in a suitable location, hopefully.

How big are you thinking? We could probably find a villa or L shape pretty easy initially. Large tower spots aare always being sold too. I think it would be pretty neat and have players contribute and donate books

Not a large tower most like. I was thinking, size-wise, a large house, or L-shape house, something of that nature (basically something bigger than a small house, but not as big as the bigger structures). Location is a bit more important I think. When I had my library on Atlantic, it was literally right next to a moongate which worked out really, really well. Obviously, this does not need to be right next to a moongate, but in a decent location where people can feel safe to browse through books without looking over their shoulders, and at least somewhat convenient to get to.

Its too bad that we can't appropriate one of the various NPC libraries, like the library in Britain or the Lycaeum lol, I always loved those places but they only have the same handful of spawned books, which is a sad waste.

Anyway, it is awesome to see enthusiasm for such an endeavor, thank you very kindly :)

This is an awesome idea!! If you need anything please send me a PM.

I have been here since the beginning and would love to put some of my stories on paper for other to read. I doubt I am the only one that feels this way.

The politics on this server are awesome! There are/will be many stories to tell

Yesterday I asked a UOR staff member about it and he said it is something that might be along in the next patch or so. Hopefully this is the case :)

any group responsible for harming Mr. Cage, deserves a fate worse than reappropriated commodities.
