Right now there's not a lot of functional furniture that works as a container, so most people are stuck with an unsightly wall of chests. There are, however, many other furniture items that are already in the game, but not implemented. These new items could add to the decor of a house and add more value to player crafters. New furniture items could also help retain veteran players and serve as a gold sink. As a model, the existing taxidermy system is near perfect. A player with more than 90 (GM?) carpentry skill can purchase a taxidermy kit from an NPC for 100,000. The taxidermy kit is then used to create a deed (usable by any player) for one of an assortment of different wall-mounted trophies. Hopefully using the existing taxidermy system would make it easier to implement a new furniture system. Base Furniture System A player with more than 90 (GM?) carpentry skill can purchase a set of "carpentry plans" from NPC carpenters. Using the "carpentry plans" and 100 boards, the player can create a deed for one of the following items: A closet A sea chest A chest of drawers An ornate armoir An ornate chest of drawers A dresser An ornate chest The "carpentry plans" are consumed during the creation of the new piece of furniture. A deed for the furniture item is created. This deed would function the same as BOD reward deeds and be usable in any house the player owns. A player should be able to move/rotate the furniture item using the interior decorator tool. Using an axe on the furniture should return the furniture to deed form. Additional enhancement #1 In addition to the "carpentry plans" and 100 normal boards, the carpenter would also need 200 oak boards. Additional enhancement #2 In addition to the "carpentry plans" and 100 normal boards, the carpenter would also need 100 boards of a specific variety such as oak, teak, bamboo and rosewood. These special varieties of boards would be obtainable by high level lumberjacks in the same manner as oak (small chance with every successful lumberjacking attempt). Furniture items created with the special varieties of boards would retain the hue of the boards. For example rosewood would have a reddish hue and bamboo would be a much lighter shade than teak. This system could be further expanded to include decorative tables and rugs. Your thoughts?
It would be nice to have additional carpentry rewards such as this. I would probably make a carpenter for this without hesitating. Anything that you can add into your home to customize it and having an alternative to the normal metal / wooden chests is a great idea.
Allready when I first joined this server and learned about the BOD system my first thought were, and what about Carpenters, Tinkers and Alchemists? Why only have a BOD system for Tailors and Black Smiths? I lather learned about the nicely implemented boat crafting, but I still think that the three crafters outside the BOD system is somewhat "nerfed" in comparison to the other two. Firstly I was thinking about how easy it would be to implement the same system for carpenters adn tinkerers since they have a wide variety of items to produce but why stop there, why not also include the alchemist and maybe even the scribe? This idea Uppgreydd came up with sounds to me like a damn good idea, he is 100% accurate when he say there's a ton of carpentry items in game that is usable but not implemented in the crafting system. And the example he gives are just a few of many. Personally I think devs should give this some consideration. Good post Upp I'm with you 100% on this!! /Rand
So so happy that crafters will get more options tx so very much. Please give us some table options too something grand for grand houses.
I think this is an excellent idea! It can only enhance the game. I agree that the usual wall of chests is extremely unattractive. I hope staff seriously considers implementing this.
I don't like the new graphics. There are pleny of uncraftable pieces of furniture that have always been part of UO, though. Besides the dresser and chest of drawers there are benches, cots, display cases, bookshelves with books, various rugs, and dozens of types of tables. These should be attainable but I think they should be attained through a BOD system. Just giving crafters something new to make isn't that great. The BOD system creates a more interesting challenge than just gathering resources and clicking menus. It also probably helps with player retention. Moreover, I think that a BOD system should be created for all of the crafts. Partially this is to help game balance but if there were desireable BOD rewards for cooking and bowcraft it would make it harder for people to have the characters they create simply for mass BOD collection. . . . Mostly I just wanted to say I don't like the new graphics, though.
I like the idea but I don't like the ornate stuff. It's creeping too far into the UO future I don't want a part of. That sea chest is borderline, but still has the style. There's plenty of other reward things we can get through carp, like furniture dye tubs, if we can keep the neon out. Nice thread though, well thought out and I agree, just not with all the design options.
Chest of drawers and the dresser with mirror are about all I like... There are a lot of tables and I like the display cases in shops.
Hasn't it ever bothered you that no matter how many books you put in your bookshelf it's always empty? That's one of those things that's always really irked me about this game like the glitchy the short spear graphic.
Haha, I said something about the short spear when I started playing again... over 10 years and it still looks stupid.
I agree, having a few extra/different items would be nice, whether the items are crafted or given as a BOD reward. Both are good ideas, and would probably make our little UOR world a bit more unique. (possibly in addition to those ideas for upgraded, non-stone, keep/castle/tower/etc... designs, listed somewhere in a different thread...) Good job!! -fren
