Should boats be placeable in standing water? (Poll)

Should players be able to launch ships in standing water with no where to sail?

  1. No, this is ridiculous and makes no logical sense and/or serves no good purpose

I feel that boats should not be able to be placed in standing water where there is literally no where to sail to.

    Examples given:
    Shrine of Compassion
    West Brit Bank
    Etc etc

There are plenty of people who place boats on open waters and never sail them anywhere. They serve as places to recall to and conduct business from only. I see no difference between a parked boat at Wyvern Island and a parked boat at Compassion Shrine, other than individual aesthetic judgement, and have no problem with the placement of boats in any water outside of dungeons. If they bought the boat, placed the boat, refresh the boat, and use the boat according to all the rules, where's the beef?

The beef is basically akin to seeing your neighbors living out of RVs in their driveway. It's just unsightly. Not saying your opinion isn't valid. Just getting a feel for the various opinions on the matter.
It is nice not to see dungeons all clogged up with them, for sure. :)

    Thanks :)

Thank you for proving my point about your ability to make a useless eyesore out of that strip of water in town.

one should only be allowed to "put a boat in the water" from a dock?
then if they can sail to a place... that's all fine :)

While I can almost get behind this, I would have to disagree considering all the small islands one can sail to that do not have a dock in place. A nice thought though, to be sure.

Well you could always sail to these islands and disembark there. You could not recall to the island and drop a boat there.

Ships here on UO Ren have been nerfed enough as it is. I do not want to see more restrictions placed on ships.

That being said, I do think that one should NOT be able to conduct BANK business while on a ship.
I think this would eventually lead to the clearing of many canals, which I bet would make Blaise happy.

While it really doesn't bother me, it doesn't make any sense to have a boat in Lord British's moat. I think Aegis' idea makes the most sense and firmly support such an adjustment. I think we should go one step further and make it so we can only drydock at the docks. This would really make sailing much more interesting to me as well as making boat placement more tactically important.

As far as banking from the boat goes, I see no problem with this and enjoy doing so myself. What I think we should avoid is having Magincia, Jhelom and other town banks gridlocked with boats. I'm sure this will be an unpopular idea but perhaps we should have to take our boats to the docks to refresh them, too. This would keep banks and places like wyvern island less congested and allow players that wouldn't currently have a chance to do so sail up to those spots without unused boats blocking them out.

Really, how often do you even see a boat at any of the dozens of docks in the world? This doesn't make any sense. The docks should be a place where you run into other sailors. Both of these changes would greatly improve sailing in my opinion. The only problem I can see with implementing these changes would be that Justice Island would become inaccessible except through magical means.

You're entitled to your opinion of course, Blaise - but I think that disliking the look isn't much of a reason to bring up changing it. Hell, I like you and yet I find Tater's boat by West Brit Bank funny. I've gone out of my way to look at it several times in fact, and if there were no boat there I'd never pay any attention at all to that stretch of water. Am I wrong to think that's also true in your case? That the presence of some boats bother you in places you'd otherwise never look twice at anyway? I enjoy the Ultima landscape more than anyone I've ever talked with. I used to run around on foot all the time (movement stam loss here has cured me) because I wanted to enjoy the landscape and not blaze through it on a horse with treehack on barely noticing its existence. Yet I've never found a boat parked anywhere offensive. I guess seeing a boat in a pond or a moat seems right enough to me, though I guess I've never had one advertising an insult to me either. :) Even seeing boats in dungeons never bothered me in a visual way. I only object to them because I know how they can be used/abused. Houses sometimes bother me because of their placement (REALLY ruining the scenery IMO) or their style (can't stand the workshops) or even their deco. But I'd never suggest revamping the housing system because of my personal tastes.

That said, since when can you bank from boats here? I'm totally in support of banking from well-placed boats - it's a time-honored tradition that takes me back as far as 1999. But I posted a Bug Report a while ago about the fact that one couldn't bank from a boat. I had tried and failed every time at Jhelom, Nujel'm, Serpent's Hold, and Trinsic. Was it fixed?

Personally, I don't see an issue with banking from boats, if the banker is accessible from the boat. However, this does pose a problem of people blocking up the banks near water with boat barricades and the like. In my opinion, boat barricades, however 'part of UO' are simply silly and should not exist.

Zag I know you basically just said in a long-winded way, that I'm campaigning because Tater's boat is insulting. I could really care less what he named his boat. He could have put something truly offensive on there and my opinion would be the same. If you recall from earlier days, I've been campaigning to have the boat removed from the Compassion Shrine pond as well. It just does not belong there. Boats in moats do not belong there either. There is simply ZERO purpose to that. It is an eyesore even without the boat being named the 'SS Suck it Blaise'. I suppose I'm more flattered about the sign than anything knowing that Tater is willing to go out of his way in an attempt to upset me. My distaste for that boat is binary and equal to that of any boat placed in standing water.

I love the idea of docks only, especially for dry-docking. I mean, we're making history perfected here right? Doesn't that sort of imply LOGICAL function, not 'what makes everything the easiest'?

As for Justice Island and other such rare locations, a simple dock could be constructed to facilitate the docking requirements in such a place and I don't think the ower of that island would be upset in the least.

Have I mentioned I'm still really happy there's no boats in dungeons? All in all, these boats in stillwater are not terrible but they are aesthetically ridiculous and functionally illogical.

I understand the irritation caused when one is unable to sail a canal or channel, in the relative safety of their ship, because someone else has been inconsiderate enough to leave their ship in the way. I have been in that situation. Personally, I will never "place" a ship upon a canal or channel. But I have sailed several such channels, as long as they are accessible from the sea, with the only concern being the size of my ship.

I think I may have a solution, but the mechanics may be a bit too complex to be viable.
What if ships were to "time-out" (or disappear) within 5 minutes after the last person on board the ship either logged-out or otherwise disembarks? Kind of like when a character "times-out" if logged-out somewhere other than an inn or their house (either owned, co-owned, or friended)?

I think we can all agree that ships are NOT the same as housing, and were never intended to be. One cannot ban or remove someone, or something, from their ship. A ship can not only be taken for a joyride, but can literally be stollen if a key (even a copy) is obtained. Thus, ships were never meant to be much more than the glorified combination of a mount and a portable chest.

Okay, now I'm slightly deviating from the "standing water" issue, but it still has to do with irritating uses of ships. One thing that chafes my backside is when people leave a number of ships in a manner that blocks access to a desired location. Now, I have nothing against an armada of ships forming a blockade, as long as there are people on those ships. Unless they are online and on their ships, people should not be able to use those ships to keep others from reaching certain locations that are only accessible from the water, such as Cyclopse Valley, Wyvern Point, and Wyvern Isle.

Agreed. Ship blockades by players not currently sailing said ships, is bad.

My issue isn't with people sailing channels. The issue is with boats that literally can't move or sail into a body of water outside of a screen or two. It serves no pupose or function worth accommodating. :)

Thanks for the idea though, that's cool.

It seems like a simpler solution is just to reduce the boat decay time--48 hours seems reasonable. If someone really wants to tie up a spot, fine; they just have to keep refreshing it. But, if someone hasn't used a boat in 2 days, then it's just clutter.

Unless a few people not liking the look of something constitutes a problem, boat use isn't really a problem and no 'solution' is needed. If boat owners were suddenly told where and for how long they could park their boats or discouraged by new and overly restrictive rules because of someone's artistic vision, we'd have a good start on the making of a three ring circus. Current boat use is accurate to every era of the game I'm aware of and it does not create an imbalance in the game, which has been stated as staff's general criteria for deviating from normal game rules/Ren era.
