As a new guy here, I'm trying to remember the era's templates. My macroing goes well, but it is about time to shift focus to what my 7 x mage will be. Some questions for y'all.... 1. Is this the era of Scribe/Nox mages....mind blast for damage against 100/100/25...? I remember hybrid warriors that were decent 2. Archer mages good? 3. What PVP gets the most action? Are factions going ok? Any Order / Chaos? Rampant reds? 4. No pre-casting, right? Basically, before I commit a buncha gold to something, I'd love to get some opinions. I'm sure I coulda found a lot of this out through digging, but sometimes it just pays to ask. And finally, anyone looking for an old scrapper for their guild?
Scribe mages are popular but only get buffs to defensive spells, not offense. Nox Mages are ok, but not all that so several have been relatively disappointed with them. Hopefully there's some tweaks in the future to get them up to snuff. MB damage is the difference between the highest and lowest stat, divided by two, when not resisted. So vs a 100/100/25 you're looking at 75/2, or a potential for 37.5 damage. Archer Mages are ok, but not great. They can be effective when used wisely but are not a very common template. Factions ebbs and flows but probably sees the most legit PvP on the shard. O/C is fairly dead and there's about 2-3 packs of PKs out there and a few stragglers running solo or in pairs. Yes, you can pre-cast (ie: cast and hold the spell until you select your target, which is how most folks will kill you, by synching their drops) I'd say get out there and knock some stuff around and see who's who before looking to join up in a guild. Most of the personalities are pretty open so it's easy to get to know the crowd. Hop in http://uorenaissance.com/irc where all the real PvP happens and I'm sure you'll blend right in.
Thanks Blaise...by pre-casting I mean the old art of casting an ebolt...equipping and hally whacking...then lowering weapon and releasing the pre-casted spell. I'm guessing not, it's pretty old school and broken.
Yeah, you can hold spells while you melee. They will time out after I think 60s and require recasting. Tank/Halberd Mages are still formidable in this era, but there's no 'insta-hit' for weaponry. You'll have to wait an appropriate amount of time to swing the weapon, not some crazy 2s cycles with 25 Dex. lol So for example, you hold an ebolt, wait for a big halberd hit, drop the ebolt, then some finishing spells and blah blah. They are not the only template and hardly even common really.
There is no insta-hit here, it's based off your dexterity and weapon's speed rating. A little more info: Use two-handed weapons as one-handed weapons are crap for damage on this shard unless you have a power or better. Barbed leather armor RULES, no dex loss or meditation penalty and it's simply like being wrapped in titanium or at least tempered steel lol. Metal armor is worthless IMO (Only use for a blacksmith on this shard is the GM weapon repair deeds) as it drops dex seriously f$%^ks meditation, unless you plan to duke it out in dexxer vs. dexxer fights I would recommend staying away from metal armor. Even if you do go dexxer I'd probably stick with high end magical studded leather, just a suggestion. If you want a mage, stun mage with inscription will serve you well, strap on some barbed leather armor, get some potions and regs, good to go, instant PvP toon. Factions might be a way to get some PvP action but it's a bit slow right now but as Blaise said it goes up and down. You can always hit IRC and troll for a duel if you're bored. Welcome to UOR, it's a good server and hopefully will continue to improve over time.
No dexterity requirement on this server like there was on OSI (meaning tank mage templates are totally viable here.) People in this community often confuse the insta hit term with weapon cycling that was possible to get faster hits on other free shards (like equipping your halberd at the right point in your wrestle timer and getting a faster hit out of it.) Insta hit as you mean it exists here at all ranges of dexterity. Blaise's first post is spot on. Stun mages are pretty standard for pure. Fencing mages are pretty effective for hybrids. Lumberjacks and nox fencers are pretty popular for dexers. Most players supplement their regs with all pots and wands. Message me in IRC if you need any help or have any questions!
Decided to roll as a Macer/mage. Get your total refresh potions out, boys, cause first I'm gonna thunk ya...then I'm gonna thunk ya some more. EDIT: Also, where is a fair priced shop for leather armor?
Best leather armor prices I've seen: http://uorforum.com/threads/ragnaroks-end-of-the-world-shop-now-open.5743/ Freshly killed corn-fed animals, no previous owners (so any sweaty smell is your own). Plus other stuff.
