In this picture I am covering up a lockable box with 3 gold stacks and a beef steak.

By covering up the box like this, does it prevent any thief from opening the box and stealing from it? Seeing as the thief can't access it in snooping. Perhaps he can steal from it in a random steal without snooping, but I'm not worried about that.

So does this covering up method work? Or is the only way to protect oneself by locking the box?

it slows down how quickly they can find your primary container. If you have the box locked, it should prevent them from stealing from it.

just make sure the box itself weighs more than the max stealing weight. (if the box only weighs 9 stones, they could just steal the whole box)

instead of using a bunch of different items, i'll usually get 4 of the same type of boxes so they just stack neatly on top of one another.

I know that thieves are still able to snoop 4-5 objects to find my 6th box underneath, so I know it doesn't prevent them completely, but it does deter them as it takes them longer to get to your final box. if you hide while they are trying to snoop you, it should close all your bags to them.

I could get to that box without a problem, unlocked, and trap removed. Actually when I see a pack like that, I wonder what it is you're trying to protect and will focus on you more than others.

Nothing is truly safe unless item blessed or what have you... as it should be.

Anything done is prevention not a guarantee.

Try lower right or left corner and several... several single cloth squares layed out in a pattern all across the item you're trying to protect.
Have more than one box stacked one on top of another with random worthless items inside. The dummy boxes on top of course. Maybe place a rune to Ogre Lords that you label as "boat" next to a key bought from the tinker.... get creative :)

I can get to that too but most thieves haven't a clue so, you've lowered your "audience participation" by a considerable sum.

    G'luck!

Simply magic lock a wooden chest and place a hally in it. This is 100% unstealable.

The method of stacking crap in your bags can be annoying and most skilled thieves do not have a problem getting to what's underneath your 10 stacked death robes.

Either way, you won't get your stuff stolen. With one technique you can go afk with one not.

Thanks. But then again I feel I should give thieves a chance.. Thiefing is hard in UO and extra hard on this shard and I just don't want them getting discouraged and leaving the server.

So I'll leave my boxes unlocked and my bags uncovered for now. Thank's for this info everyone.

I haven't played a thief in a very long time but I remember I used to just set a razor macro to open all of the common types of containers in peoples pack. So I'd set it to open pouches, bags and backpacks. Then I'd just repeatedly press the macro until it opened the container that was covered up by cloth.

Works, but you get into big problems when there are too many of these types in your area (cities, events, champs/harrowers, etc), because Razor is trying to open them all.
