I need some clarification on how exactly tinker traps work. I know there is an older thread about this, however no one seemed to know exactly how it all works. If i were to tinker trap a box, would i have to lock it? Does this mean that in order for someone to set the trap off, they would have to lockpick the box, and then open it, OR will the trap go off if the box is not locked? If the box does need to be locked in order to be trapped, what would happen if i locked the box, trapped it, and then lockpicked it? will the trap go off on me, or just the next person that opens it? Also, what effects how much damage is done by a trap, and how much damage is done? I would appreciate if someone could help me with this. Thanks
so if i locked it, trapped it, and lockpicked it, and someones open it, the trap will go off on them. correct?
You can only trap an unlocked object. Attempting to lockpick a trapped chest, even if you are the creator of said trapped chest, will cause it to go off. This will require a re-application of a trap on an unlocked container that can only be armed by locking it.
Indeed. Unless there is some small chance of picking the container without setting off the trap (which, when I tested this some time ago, I repeatedly failed to do even with a minimum tinkering box and gm lp and dh), this doesn't work. Spells don't work either.
So, me and bog just tested this out. There is no way around this. In order for a box to be trapped, it must be locked (with a key, after trapping it). Magic lock does not enable the trap. Magic unlock disables the trap. Using the lockpicking skill automatically sets the trap off (even with 95 lockpick and gm detect hidden) I really think this should be fixed, and i think many people might agree. I do not remember a chest having to be locked to trap it, however i would be fine with this if the chest could be lockpicked without setting the trap off. Even if detect hidden was also needed! I don't think it should be made 100% impossible to trap a chest without it being locked, OR to lockpick a chest without the trap going off. This eliminates the option for a certain character build. I understand the staff's priorities may be elsewhere, however this has been a desired change i believe since the start of the shard. Could someone please start taking this somewhat seriously? I encourage anyone that would like to see this change to push the matter. Thank you!
don't get me twisted I've killed more players here with t-traps than anyone... I effing guarantee it. Hence the "perfected" version we have today will likely never be improved upon. Again, good luck with that.
It would appear I don't know as much about this system as I thought I did, I apologize for misleading you.
Have you tried locking the box, trapping it, then unlocking it with they key instead of using magic unlock or lockpicking it?
