Okay, let's talk ships. Specifically those ships that are left unattended, for days at a time, blocking what little access there is to hot-spots such as Wyvern Isle and Cyclopse Valley in the Lost Lands. I am getting very tired of sailing to Wyvern Isle only to find seven or more ships moored horizontally along the west side of the island, two or three ships deep, blocking all access to the Wyverns that spawn there. Now, I am sure that a few people are simply oblivious to their actions, but most people who leave their ships there do so out of malice and selfishness. If a Counselor is called, will these unattended ships be moved out a few tiles away? Or, is this an issue that we, the players, need to deal with ourselves? I would sure like to hear what others, including Chris and Ezekiel, think about this issue. Thank you.
I left mine there so new players could get on and use it to gain provoke without having to spend the money to buy a ship. You are welcome to use it as well.
we would not move any anchored boats/ships, but as tater said if you shout up in irc I am sure you will on a boat in 5 mins
As a general rule I never leave a boat there. I feel that there is no purpose in leaveing a boat there perpetually as it just creates situations like what we see here. All in favor of 48hr boat decay say Aye!
Knowing what people are capable of, I would never use soemone else's ship, especially in an area such as Wyvern Isle. I am sure many a sole has been killed, and looted, by naively using an unlocked ship. It is good to know that the counselors will not move any of these ships; sad, but good to know.
Counselors do not have the ability to move (or remove) a boat by any means outside of normal player abilities, such as commanding it with keywords &/or dry-docking it. They also have no way of boarding a ship unless the planks were left unlocked or a player has paged for help while aboard the ship itself. In regards to the unattended ships which have been left parked in the region, I am not entirely sure what we as staff could do about a situation like this. It's not feasible that we would intervene with ships parked in areas & left unattended, whether intentionally for the purpose of blocking other ships or not. Even if we were to forcefully move or remove ships which were used for this purpose, this would do nothing to prevent the same situation from occurring again in the future or immediately after the existing ships were removed. To increase the decay rate for boats, simply for the purpose of combating techniques such as this, would in reality only punish those who own ships & use them for normal open-seas activities, as majority of the time any players who are using placed boats to act as blockers are aware of the decay rate of 14 days & will refresh them to keep their blockers in place. The only situation in which I could realistically see us forcefully moving or removing ships would be in the event that they were blocking water travel to or from any major water-ways or cities in which you could reach by use of a boat. Ultimately, I think that the best solution (at least that I can think of right now) would be to leave this entirely in the hands of the players to defuse, and that hopefully reasonable solutions can be found to address the situation, such as this:
I understand and agree. Would not want the decay rate to change. I had a funny idea of creating a monster that would bite the feet of the tillerman of any older than "new" ship, forcing the tillerman to automatically sail out 7 to 10 tiles away from shore. Thank you Ezekiel
One semi related comment, in constructing the Ancient MIB instances we did remove two possible sources of Wyverns by blocking off unused areas. I've spoken to Ez about making some small spawn adjustments elsewhere to account for that.
Unused? You cut off access to Wyvern Point, which can hardly be classified as "unused areas." But, I do think the new Pirate system is well-suited for that area, so I'm happy. Oops, hope that wasn't supposed to be a secret. But, I am feeling much better now. Especially since Ezekiel wrote: "...I think that the best solution...would be to leave this entirely in the hands of the players to defuse..." And boy-oh-boy have my "hands" been busy.
Taters boat was safe for me i sat there and macroed afk the whole time and never had any issues with other players hell even towards the end of my skill gaining there was another player on the same ship doing provo also. if your concern be loosing stuff either bring a few recalls and a rune or you can always use the help im stuck option if someone kills ya.
I understand that this thread is about ships, but if anyone needs a spot to macro, I have an empty house and always have a few drakes stabled for new players that need to macro Provo. Feel free to PM me at any time to set it up for macroing, you don't need a key to get in an if it is set up you can resume at any time. According to the beastiary the barding difficulty for drakes/wyverns is identical so this method ha always been my preferred.
Thanks for providing this service. It's this kind of player-helping-player stuff that really helps to balance out some of the griefing.
I used Tater's provo boat with 2 toons and had no problems either time. And I REALLY appreciate you letting us use it Tater!
That is quite nice of Tater, I am sure. And I am so glad none of you had any problems. But, there are not yet many pk'ers here on UO Ren. and the thieves are not usually willing to leave their comfort-zones. But, as the server's population continues to grow, so will the numbers of the more undesirable characters grow. I have been playing UO since 1998 and know all about recalls, runes, etc. I even had my own thief (Juiblex) on the Asuka shard and I know just how easy it is to steal literally everything from someone who is afk macroing. And yes, I realize it was illegal to macro while AFK back in those days, but people still did it. Juiblex made a fortune because of it. Thus, I know better than to put myself on a vessel I am unable to lock, especially in an area as popular as Wyvern Isle.
if someone would show me the ship/ship key I would be in great debt, been here just a lil over a month. thanks
