    Upon finishing the days patrol...
a group of brigands stumble upon a confusing scene in their return to the tavern.
on the floor lay a small wooden box containing a rotting human head and a note.
the contents of the letter were long winded but best summed up as
::clears throat and takes on the voice of the author::

"great injustice has been done to my family and I.
Samuel, a brigand within your ranks, has wronged us
beyond all reconciliation. you must bring Samuel to
justice and deliver his head into this box. failure to fo-
llow my wishes will result in your kin continuing to fall
by my sword. please, for both our sake, do not ignore
this notice. it is your first and last warning.
    "

at this time the three men took notice of the head already inside the box.
it was of one of there men...
"vengeance" scrawled into his forehead with a knife.

laying beneath the paper was a rune.
the three figured this was the best place to start.
they called for their mage captive to transport them to the location.
of course, testing it first to make sure it was not directly into a jail cell.

the location looked familiar, it was somewhere inside the hedgemaze east of Skara.
they cautiously searched the area hoping to find some clue as to what had happened and where they could find this "Samuel".

the only person around was a wandering healer.
he had been out in this maze for so long he was shocked to see the group, but offered no conversation.
had he forgotten how to speak? or had he grown so used to solace that the urge to communicate had left him?

with no clues to go by and light fading fast from the sky...
the three decided to make camp for the night under some palms and put off their search till tomorrow.

    the following day...

two of the brigands from the investigation party stumbled upon a butchered corpse slumped up against the wall just outside the camp.
it was one of theirs alright.
was this a random slaying? [unlikely]
or could it of been this fellow from the note keeping his promise? [quite probable]

they rushed back to the tavern to see if there had been a visit from the stranger.
the same box from the previous day now sat in the middle of the room.
decapitated heads of their comrades surrounding it.

they burst out the Tavern doors and down the steps tempers flaring, weapons in hand.
one of the brigands had noticed there were no flies on the heads yet.
which meant they were still very fresh.
it was likely they had just been dropped off and were still close by.
perhaps sitting up in a tree watching them?

a plan to split up and search the area was being hatched when they heard a whistle come from the south.
the same whistle their scouts use when a trespasser is spotted.

the three men dug their heels into their horses and sped south in the direction of the whistle.
it wasn't long before they spotted a caped man.
he immediately jumped behind a small grouping of trees hoping to avoid being seen but was too late.
the brigands bore down on him immediately, bringing blades and arrows down on him before a single question.

the man hit the ground like a sack of mongbat feces, where he lay motionless bleeding out.
upon searching his satchel, magical scrolls for both incognito and blade spirits were found.
tangled up in the scrolls binding were several strands of bloody hair.
almost as if someone had been carrying severed heads around with them... hrm... suspicious.

this would make sense of how the man was able to move around easily and not be spotted.
it also explained the condition of the corpse we found that morning.
shredded to bits as if he'd been ambushed by a pack of tigers.

with the killer brought to justice, albeit not the kind of justice he had in mind, things could return to normal around the camp.

and SOME PEOPLE could finally start sleeping in their beds and let others use the shitter!

Do not sleep too soundly, scoundrels! Your deeds are well known and will be repaid in ruin!

OOC: I have it on good authority that mongbat feces are some of the foulest. Great adventure!
