Recently the Renaissance staff has been forced to take action on a variety of accounts for a variety of reasons. And with the Anniversary upcoming it is a good time to review the rules and make sure that players understand that certain behaviors are unacceptable and will be addressed by the staff.

Selling Items, Cross Server Trades, Trading Gift Cards for Items/Properties
While most people think the rules against this are for the server, etc. These rules actually exist to protect the players. I'll illustrate a few reasons why you should always be careful with anyone who offers to buy/sell items in this manner.

If you agree to trade items to a player in exchange for a paypal transfer. The buyer can accept the items, file a claim with paypal for a refund and dare you to incriminate yourself in order to get the staff involved in the situation. This situation can happen in reverse or in extreme cases the buyer or the seller can simply accept the fund/items and not follow through with the transfer.

Say someone wants to trade you gift cards for items. You have no idea how those gift cards were purchased. Could be legit, could be purchased with stolen credit card numbers. In extreme cases you might get a visit from the police for credit card theft yourself if you use said gift cards to purchase items or possibly even have your account closed for fraud.

Don't risk your accounts and reputation here by buying or selling items to/from other players. The reason we do not allow it, support it, or condone those actions is to protect you from these types of scams.

Should a player be caught in these situations they will get a private chat with the staff. If we catch the situation before a transaction is made the accounts/items involved can be seized. Once money changes hands outside the game world it is more complex for the staff to get involved as the seller, if they quit, rarely cares if the buyer loses his items/accounts as they already have their funds. This is why you should never risk buying anything from anyone as they don't really care what happens to you once the sale is complete.

    Discord Conduct
With the migration from IRC to discord some players have assumed that the same behavior permissible on IRC can happen on discord. However as we are only a user of the discord service we must comply with their terms of service. You can read those rules here . Channel owners, to a degree, can be responsible for the conduct of members of their channel. Even in private conversations with other users in that channel.

If we allow a player to threaten harm against another player, even in a private conversation in a context clearly outside the game world we have no choice but to take firm and clear action to protect our access to discord. The staff always takes into account the context of the conversation and avoids any action for situations that could be considered related to playing the game. But say you threaten to take a hit out on someones family for a certain dollar value. That is clearly a threat of violence and would be dealt with harshly.

    Advanced Razor, UOS, Etc Macros
UO Renaissance is a classic server, offered free of charge to our players, so that you can experience Ultima Online from its glory days. There is no excuse to abusing the mechanics here to get an unfair advantage over other players.

We have no tolerance for players who abuse advanced macros to be lazy or get an unfair advantage against other players. I won't list the methods players use but common sense will make it clear what is not allowed here. We are all for players using creative macros to powergame should they so desire. Some of the staff here are the best macro creators in the history of UO free servers. Creating a macro to stack 3 guys on top of each other, sitting in the new player dungeon macro killing monsters for profit will obviously be dealt with harshly.

So play fair and please report anything suspicious for the staff to review. Remember DO NOT publicly shame a player you "suspect" of unfair behavior. Alert the staff and let them make a determination and please trust that we will adjudicate the situation fairly. The quickest way to create a cheater is to accuse someone playing fair of cheating.

    Account Abuse
This one is pretty obvious. Do not share accounts. Do not use more than your allowed 3 accounts. We will catch you and the extra accounts will be closed. This is easy to track and will result in having your accounts and your friends accounts closed. Some players have returned to play here only to find out their "friend" got their accounts banned trying to get an extra 3 anniversary bags.

Players can review the rest of the code of conduct for the server here. I felt it was important to be clear about the importance of these rules given some recent staff actions that we were forced to take recently. We never take action against someone without extensive research and documentation witnessed by the staff directly. It takes more time and might not be quick enough to satisfy some players but you can trust that the staff investigates and addresses situations as we are alerted to them.

    Punishment
One thing unique about Renaissance is we do not believe in publicly shaming players. In a great deal of situations players come here from elsewhere with extremely lax rules or inattentive staff. We will deal with rule breakers, work to educate them on the rules of the server and hopefully turn them into a quality player who follows our rules. The best chance for us to accomplish this is by treating everyone with respect and giving them a chance to change. So just because you do not see us flog someone in the public square for breaking a rule does not mean that rule breakers get a free pass. Help us be aware of questionable situations and then trust that the staff will address them calmly and professionally.

    Happy 7th Anniversary!
