Today I was at work trying to talk two friends into coming back to UO (randomly enough, some people I work with played back in the day), and they were perplexed when I explained the one-house-per-character rule. I know it helps create scarcity and promote a healthy economy, but that's not what I'm questioning.

So, those of you holding an extreme number of houses, what do you do with them all?

    Stare at them.

I own 1 fort 2 keeps left and a few grandfathered placement properties (they couldn’t be placed there again if I deeded up the house.)

The keeps are amazing locations and I’d rather sell them to close friends. Since most of my friends have better properties I’m sitting on them for now.

The grandfathered locations are great for vendors and newer player loaners. I use them for just that but rarely decorate them.

    Hope this helps!

There are some categories of house many of us would like to have. Often, more than 1 may be preferable (i.e. if you're a big miner):

    1) A courtyard house

    2) A house very near a town

    3) A mining house

    4) A house near good outdoor hunting

    5) A house on an island (or, better yet, an entire island)

    6) A house near a dungeon

    7) A "safe house" used only by our most nefarious characters so they ideally aren't seen with the others.

    8) A house in a good vending location
    (moongate, etc.)

    9) A house near many trees, leather bearing animals, special geological features like a sewage waterfall, a player town, a telescope, a beach, a t2a transporter etc...

So there is incentive for the very diligent and comprehensive UO player to have at *least* 9 houses (3 per account). I'm not saying I believe this should always be allowed under all circumstances, but as someone who has had probably 12-13 houses at various times, it has been for most of the reasons above.

They should make it one house per account!

Personally, I'd love that, but then the housing market would be nothing compared to what it is now. And it might make people leave, and we're a bit thin these days as it is.

I was saying this for years but what would the actual result be? El Horno convinced me about this...

Anyone who wants a house can place one. Houses up to large tower go for deed or barely above unless they're in a rather special location.

    Keeps:
10,000 an hour (low earnings) x 15 hours per week = 150,000 per week, let's say 750,000 per month.
    30 welfare plat per month at 5,000 = 150,000

    Total: 900,000 per month x 6 months = 5,400,000

Then add in an extra 600,000 from whichever holiday events occur (even if you only had Easter and the Anniversary in that 6 month period, the fewest possible number of holiday events, 600,000 bonus is easy) you have 6 million gp which is basically enough for a keep.

Even a fort can be had if you work hard, although those are rare and very pricy, making them an end game which retains interest in playing.

So while I used to be probably the loudest advocate for a one house per account rule... I don't see how it would actually add to player satisfaction when it's easy to get any non-courtyard house and not too hard to get a keep.

I would be OK with a "one massive house per account" rule.

The admin has made it abundantly clear that housing per account will never be limited unless maybe we suddenly double the population over night (and even then). But I find these questions interesting so I enjoy discussing them.

Disclaimer: I'm terrible at placing houses so my ideas about blocking requirements may be woefully inaccurate.

A big issue is that even with a restriction on massive houses, people would use blockers to game the system. So even if you limit people to one massive house per account they could still control (at least) another two forts worth of space on that account for a total of 3 forts per account.

You could make it so that if an account has a massive house they can't own any other houses. Conceivably though someone could still use their other 10 slots to control about 5 forts worth of space (not including the fort on the first account), meaning the actual restriction would be more like 2 massive houses per account rather than 1.

So if you actually wanted a system that guarantees lower prices for massive houses you'd probably have to just go all out and implement a one house per account rule.

All of this being said, I can't think of anyone who I really think is hoarding massive houses other than Labeler. I wouldn't be shocked if I were told some of the old-school voldershard migrants or IDOC crew people have several massive houses but I'd be somewhat surprised honestly.

Yeah 1 house per character is lame. Even 2 house per account would suffice better than the current state

    I have:

    A vendor house (Yew Moongate)
A Fort (Main residence, all my characters live out of this)
    A patio (CUB house)
    A Large brick (CUB house)
An Ocllo house (that's for sale)

If CUB came out I would sell those 2 houses for deed as I would have no need for them.

I reckon a LOT of spots would become available if/when CUB comes out. Specifically large spots, I can think of 10-15 Large Patios floor to ceiling with CUB off the top of my head, easily 20-30 smaller/medium houses like villas, log cabins and such also floor to ceiling with CUB.

Ideally I'd just have my fort and the vendor house. The more houses I have had the more stressful I find it remembering to refresh them.

I can see CUB houses going after that comes out, I can't wait for that! I'm down to 3 for the same reasons, ease of maintenance and I'm not selling. =P

I think I missed a memo... what’s a CUB house? I did some forum searches but didn’t find anything.

I was trying to think of all the dudes I roll with, I don't know a single one of them with houses in the double digits. The guy I know with the most is 7, BUT like One said, they are all specific houses for specific uses.

A house filled with pouches containing 124 items that will (when CUB is released) be exchangeable for copper coins under the Clean Up Britannia program.

Lesser wanted magic weapons, armour, and non player crafted items.

You realize items older than CUB release will be valued at near 0%, right?

Essentially a storage house, but as Earsnot explained there's theoretically going to be a program in which you can redeem certain items (specifically items obtained in the wild or through events, not player crafted items) for coins that will let you buy house deco and account services up to and including extra characters.
