    No sunshine, it wasn't junk back then. The potential was there, it was evident. You just didn't see it.

    It only detracts if you don't understand how to use it. Sometimes people don't want to play, or can't play, and Discord provides them a fun place to still assemble with their UO friends. And while playing, it's never, ever been a distraction, even in a highly populated channel.
