Is it related to the Era accuracy or why isn't it possible in UOR to melt ore directly from the bag of backpack horse/llama, but you would need to first drag it to ground and them smelt ?
I'd like to see this made possible myself, no idea if it's era accurate or not just seems silly to make you move it to ground or your pack.
While it may not be the solution you're after, I find that saying 'a pack horse drop', is suitable for the task at hand. Resulting ore all smelts to pack and if you're gating multiple pack animals to your house/forge, the ore combines from them all on that single tile.

Yeah, some recent mining sessions with the Lady Avery, we used gargoyle pickaxes and sapped out entire mining 'areas' like the whole northern cave in North Mines for example. Then I gate to my house, bring my packies through and pick up all the ore, gate them back, drop, smelt, repeat. Happy mining! Buying DC/Shadow/Copper/Gold ingots and paying well. Hit me up.
