Welcome! Making a bard is one of the best ways to start farming some gold without investing too much time.

If you're just starting off, I recommend making a bard (as others have suggested). It's also wise to train up Healing, Resisting Spells, and whatever other combat stuff you want.

I have some advice, too. The following applies to training out in the world, young-status or otherwise (instead of AFK macroing):

Before you venture to the wilds, pick up some travelers. You can have up to 7 or 8, I believe, but 3 is a good, easy-to-manage number. They'll say,
"Oh hey, wow, like, wow, thou adventurer, wow, Britain please?" and you say, "Yes, it is I, the Chosen One. I will take thee." Then they'll be very happy and join your fan club. They'll follow you around without a second thought. If you take them where they asked to go, you get paid (and Compassion points).

But, don't take them where they're asking to go! Instead, take them to a graveyard or a camp or a cave or something. Just find monsters! They may die, but you, being The Chosen One, can save them with Healing. Personally, I let them die.
Whether you let them die is up to you; they'll simply drop the gold they'd have given you anyway.

    If they do die,
take their clothes, cut them up (to cloth, not bandages), and message me -- I will buy the cloth off of you at a nice price. Also take their gold. Definitely take their gold. It's usually between two and three hundred gold, which ain't bad for a free helper.

Anyway, put the travelers between yourself and the angry monsters before they aggro. The monsters will target the travelers if this is done properly. The idea is to use them as meatshields. Seekers of adventure are pretty darn strong against low-level NPCs, for what it's worth. Like, really good. Escortable mages don't actually cast spells, which is unfortunate, but they can take a few hits. I'd say Seekers of Adventure and Mages are your two best options. Nobles (if they have swords) seem good too.

While they're fighting these monsters, you have the opportunity to do a few things:

    1) Raise your Healing skill. Take lots of bandages, and heal the NPCs regardless of how much damage they're taking. Whether they're taking 1 damage or 10 damage, you will gain Healing very quickly this way. You'll also make money very quickly; the seekers are pretty good at killing stuff, especially when 2 or 3 of them get on the same target.

    2) Raise your Musicianship skills. Escortable NPCs cannot be provoked to fight one another, and they cannot be provoked to fight something else. HOWEVER! If you target a monster first, and then target an NPC, the two will fight. In other words, they will only fight if you provoke a monster to attack them (not vice versa). Just keep provoking them as much as possible for max gains.

    3) Gather and/or make things! Making a battle miner? Mine in-between heals! Your NPCs will take care of the rest. Fighting beasts? Take their leather!

    4) Combat! Not a bad idea to attack stuff that your NPCs are handling. Helping your buddies will also allow you to go up against tougher enemies. Plus, you'll be earning your combat skills. Or magery. Whatever you prefer.

This is how I've been empowering my character, Imbol, and it's been pretty fun! Happy to divulge some specifics in private if you'd like. With about an hour of play on a pretty powerless character, I was making something like 4-6k gold an hour (just in straight-up gold) -- the resources (like leather) were a big bonus.

One thing that almost hit me pretty hard as a new player was the 125-item limit on my bank storage. Because I was raking in gold, however, I was able to get two boats to hold my excess items. Those held me over as I continued this method. By the time the boats were nearly full (as well as my bank box), I was able to afford a house. Didn't accept any handouts. So, it seems to work out quite alright; it's nice to have a self-made playstyle.

Most importantly, it's just fun as hell. :)

    Welcome to UO:Renaissance!

ps. I forgot to mention that travelers disappear after a while (not sure how long; 20 minutes?), so do let them die eventually. Otherwise, they vanish.

Don't train the poison skill on any pvp character. This is right up there with the best advice you'll hear. Don't walk into strange and sudden gates. There is no party at the other end.

    Welcome aboard.
