So I am not going to put his name out there, but a homie of mine had an idea that sounded pretty good to me:

Housing mechanics should be controlled like bonding slots. For example, 5 total slots per account. Fortress takes 5 slots, Keeps take 4, Large tower 3, etc.

I have said this in previous posts for other discussions, but here again, I am all for capitalism and the free market…but we play in a virtual reality where it is very important to increase our population and retention is a problem for worlds like ours. One of the effects of unlimited housing is preventing new players from acquiring worth a damn houses in their first month of playing. I think the first month of someone playing here is a crucial time, and if they have something to look forward to, maybe they will stay longer.

Just my thoughts…I think it is super silly for people to own 15 houses…I would say that about 75% of all houses on this shard are vacant…

Question for the veterans/founding shard members who are strongly against house limiting: What is more important, increasing shard population or owning 15+ vacant houses?

This is exactly where it needs to be Mes, he said keep it factual. Account abuse and housing go hand and hand. I am not cussing anyone out I am just showing proof of the way things are, when you give the opportunity for things to be abused, they will be abused its just human nature.

Basically a majority of you think tons of empty houses are good for the server, new players come and see houses everywhere giving the "illusion" there are a lot of people playing here, there really isn't, not sure where you learned math but take the online player counter and divide it by at least 2 and that is more accurate to the actual amount of unique ip's(players) online in fact is probably a little lower than that. I seem to look at it from the point of view of good ol Christopher Columbus, hes pulling up to the shores as he "discovers"(lol) america, and the shoreline is just packed as far as the eye can see with indian teepees, you think hes gonna get off the boat, or perhaps just keep moving along?

Considering the main reason this thread has been started was due to another thread being started by someone who was clearly just trolling our forums and part of the very server they "just happened" to mention in their posts; I'd say this is not nearly the issue that it is being made out to be.

For starters there are tons and tons of housing spots available all the way up to tower plots STILL. So any new player starting out can and will get a new house if they work a little towards it. A small house deed can be attained by farming quite the low level spawn and a small amount of time.

Also I don't think running around looking at every house with a certain guild tag means that all those houses are owned by the same person....I am not part of KOS or really know those guys but with my limited knowledge I'm pretty sure that guild consists of more than one person.

I really don't understand why someone like you Russel would even still play here if you just try to take opportunities to make blind statements like "this servers getting pretty fucking gay honestly".....and how long have you held on to some of your properties that you try to sell from time to time?

The sad thing is if that was actually a concerned new player which I have no doubt it in fact was not that some of the lousy replies given would certainly steer some people away from this server. Of course, for those making most of those statements I would assume that is in fact their agenda entirely.

I'm not in favor in changing anything. As long as there are open slots anywhere in the world, house hoarding is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.

Not everybody gets a fortress here or anywhere else for that matter. Take what you can get, and if you can't, then start making offers.

Having played on OSI and taken over a year to find a spot for a small house, I don't get the incessant bitching and moaning on the forums. We have it good here...

What's really the goal here? What is the purpose in discouraging house hoarding? Why is it such a detriment to the server? You can still find land to place a house, maybe not a keep but changes shouldn't happen because keep spots are taken. Whether you're new to UO or just this server it's not difficult to realize that housing is not an appropriate gauge of server population. That argument makes me laugh about as hard as when people complain Brit bank is empty, or any bank for that matter.

If you really want to free up some space then focus your lasers on the players that once played here but are no longer active. We all know them. They have a cache of homes and just log on every week or two to refresh them or have friends refreshing until the end of time. I play on this server everyday, I don't have 15 houses but I don't expect to be penalized because I own 8. The bigger problem lies with those who's houses just sit on idle accounts, some being refreshed by friends.

Yea for real... some of you might not remember how expensive osi housing was. When we're forced to pay 700k+ for a freaking small house in some serpent infested cesspool in the boondocks, maybe then would be a good time to raise objections. Besides, the dude that prompted this discussion in the thread Telamon locked was exposed to be a fraud anyway, seemingly trying to start shit between people here.

I'm not so sure he was a fraud per se...but he did have a poor attitude.

Perhaps @Dalavar could join this thread and explain his viewpoint more.

I can't completely agree with people that are not playing currently not being able to retain their housing. I think if someone is in refresh mode and the reasons for getting into said mode could be many, then they should be able to keep their properties as long as they are refreshing them. Do we not have a system where housing goes condemned if the actual owner doesn't refresh in a certain amount of time? I know the server I'm thinking of that had it was a 6 month time frame in effect thwarting friends of a house refreshing a property forever. I thought we had that system here but I am not sure.

A player that is busy with IRL business and can't really play but still is refreshing their properties for the day that they can actually play is not an issue and certainly a right that any player should continue to have as long as they are refreshing their properties. Perhaps if we don't have a system of condemnation then that could be implemented and solve that problem.

Played on a shard where it was nearly a miracle if you could place a L shape or a 2 story. Had fun. Shed no tears.

Played on UOR where there are still decent, sometimes even very good tower spots free to place. Have fun. Shed no tears.

My secret? Spend as little time as possible worrying or caring about how other people want to play this game that is like 30 games in one. You can very quickly get disgustingly wealthy never taking a single risk or leaving your house but just running macros and moving around green and gray rectangles all day long, if gold and 15 big houses are so important to you.

That said, I'm not against house changes if it will make everyone feel happy again. I also don't care if people want to own 15 houses and their way of having fun in this game is to be land barons or real estate moguls. I prefer having just one main residence. I have more though. If you are curious or if it might reveal while some players have more than one or two they are: (2) two large keeps (one was my first main residence, holds sentimental value and practical value because I use it to train - the other I just bought for a steal IMO that I plan to flip ASAP for a profit because that's awesome there's a market that lets you do that, (1) a vendor location that still gets use that I got for a great price, (1) my main residence, and (1) a sandstone that I need to maintain because certain derps have placed there just to harass me and mine. I have about four other houses/blockers that are all going to be sold, three of which I am just waiting to be contacted for the buyer to pick up.

Can I throw in that even if housing limits never change, I'd like to see a few small-mid size design improvements added in similar to the fort. I support one per account for the record.

A variety of improvements in layout/secures/lockdowns would be a good compromise I think. Predesigned shops that would be suited to a variety of uses or deco from undead to vendors, to pirates, whatever.

Maybe housing spots isn't the issue, but variety???

These threads are always good to discuss and brainstorm in anyhow

What about custom housing discussion as well? I was never a fan, but with the right options, it would have potential to add even more content (if tasteful.

It would be a decent idea on limiting the super large housing amounts per acct, but I wouldn't want that to interfere with the players who may have one for their personal use but also use one or more for these awesome resist events or other events that benefit the shard as a whole. Honestly though, you'll probably never be able to freely place a fortress/keep without having to wheel and deal with others who place a small or something else to snag the space if one were to go idoc or something.

in my opinion, custom housing would have to be premade designs approved by Telamon and used as additional housing choices. When I left osi the custom housing thing was just starting, and it was truly an eyesore seeing the land scarred with dirt patch foundations or some other monstrosity someone designed. i thought Angel Island had a decent system for that, where you could play around with custom housing on green acres fenced in area and submit designs for approval... however I vaguely remember Telamon saying in irc about the item count or something wrong with that kind of thing, but I don't remember exactly.

there is still 2 unplaced fortress spots on the map given current housing placements, of course blocked by unused trash housing

Imagine the crying that would take place if players had to choose the 3 houses they wanted to keep.

The house hoarding is shite, as is the abuse of the 3 accounts per person.

I'd be interested to know the average amount of playing time for accounts with houses.

I wonder how many log in to refresh their houses and log back out.

Also, just placed a large tower. Happy to share the location with any would-be homeowners.
