I have a character that is in the thieves guild with 0 stealing. The disguise kit is a very useful tool

My point with tracking is that the one skill makes a 4xgm thief skill set (hide stealth snoop steal) totally useless. Point in case, I was at a champ spawn, stealthing carefully waiting for the boss to die. Positioned myself next to a couple who were spamming heal on pets. Boss died, plat dropped I got one of the two players plat, ran while in persuit. Got away and hid my plat. Came back and of course one of the tamers at the spawn was running a track macro. The reason tamers have track is finding zoo quest animals. So a player capable of running champs, two drags and a mare who has a side job finding rare tames makes my thief, a dedicated rogue player capable of nothing else, useless. That's always been the case in uo.

So true. As thief you really have to rely on the mistakes of others, i.e. that they dont track. At one point, after I did some Champ steals, every group was running 30 skillpoint tracking macros. Stealthed thieving was completely useless. Same is the case, when people do Harrowers now here. Tracking is really overpowered, especially against Stealthers.

But then again, you just have to switch to other tactics, which I did:

    1) Pretend to be a innocent newbish mage or something that wants to join the Champ and even openly try a double steal in the end.

    2) Wait for the Champ to die and run in collecting the gold.

Thieves really have to be creative here and switch their tactics. The gamemechanics themselves aren't very helpful.

My experience with using the thief proof tactics of old were still sound.
However, it's also proven to be enough to turn a standard thief into a standard grief.

Just watched one thief clean out the bags of 3 players at Ocllo bank (on the busy side (west)) using his/her wits and strategic 'wall's when applicable. My character "saw" a smattering of the steals as screen spam. I could have called guards.... I checked the loot instead.

They made away with gems, regs, weapons. Coincidence or not, nothing over 5 stones. Perhaps discipline? Certainly nothing to write home about. I bet (like me) every once in awhile he/she gets a real treat that some foolish person forgot about... but, sure overall... mostly fodder.

No one saw him. Those that did, didn't care and he/she appeared to be having (gasp) fun. That's a bank thief.
I couldn't stop smiling as I watched. I was actually proud of the fellow rogue.

Luckily I follow the code... you keep what you sow this time thief. I'd like to think that they know the number one rule of them all...

A rogue is at their absolute best when they don't have a story to be told.

Happy Holidays. May your savage turkeys be many. May you kill many elves... soon.

... and it's total crap gaming. Only because he got away with it, doesn't mean it's skilled stealing. It's stealing at a crowded bank and gambling with the potential guardwhack for again... CRAP items.

This is the niveau where most thieves start with, and sadly most stop there too.

The townstealing you talk about is stealing of crappy stacked items - nothing special, nothing worthy, stuff you could much more easily farm. This isn't early era OSI when this crap was valuable.

I am stealing in towns too, stealing in towns isn't the problem. It's rather what you steal. I'd rather stealth around 1 hour without any crap steal, just to be ready for the right moment, when people get the real shiny things out of their bank boxes.

I am sorry, but I can smell Faceless God and any other town thieves 2 kilometers against the air and I am sure, any other seasoned player does that too. You just hit some newbish AFKs that way that left their regs and gems in their bags - while probably missing the big things happening somewhere else.

Oh, PS: That Wall of Stone casting used to be a semi-secret two years ago, only applied for worthy items...

Let me add an example, because it fits so perfectly: We have a thanksgiving event running right now. There is a limited amount of camps where people appear. They farm holiday coins and rare drops there. It takes them several minutes to clear the spawn out. They might even bring in dexxers (--> weapon steal) to hurry up the killing.

    So, you have

    1) a small area to search for for
    2) guaranteed players there
    3) very high potential for at least one holiday coin to steal
    4) easy escape, because the dragons etc. are busy.

What does a good thief do know? Stealing gems and regs in Ocllo from newb AFKs? I think not...

I get plat, tmaps, boats, lots of good things in town

the reason you can smell FG from a mile away is I play him aggressively and run on people like a mugging. And of course in era none of the good stuff was blessed/newbied/made purposefully heavy, so you had the potential for better gains. But all in all, town stealing is fun. I enjoy it, even if it is to mess around with folks over nonsense items.

FG is for fighting a little, my JOS char is a scout and can't take hits, so he's just to find afk people, look for idocs (that I don't do anymore) or figure out where people live.

Good thing about UOR is you can have a bunch of different thief types.
