I think what "bored" players should do is stop worrying about the actual game and start paying attention to the people playing it. How can you make it funny for them? What makes it fun for you? Set some goals, even if they aren't "get better at hally-maging" or "loot 20 idocs this week via spreadsheet". "Figure out where that guy who killed a new player on IRC lives and ruin his life" is a totally fine goal, and you might even enjoy roleplaying it.

If you want to get better at the game in general and not just one aspect, lose your horse. No really. Stop riding a mount and play a non-pvm role in the game.
