Man I had forgot all about gardening in UO.. It all came back reading this thread.. my 2-story used to be crammed with various pots to combine and get the optimal plants.
I agree it has a place here on UOR and even if the plants didn't give any bonuses or weren't flashy colors it would give crafter and homebody characters a chance to make cool new rareish items.. and give us something to do with all the earth elemental dirt.

I've been on this train for a long time and still am. I would play 24/7 if I could garden ingame. :)

You're crazy! That's Ice Isle! You can't grow plants in that climate!

That's kind of a fun idea actually, tying the plants to specific regions (i.e. some only grow in grass areas like apple trees, some only in jungles like some kind of uniquely beautiful flower, some only in swamps like some kind of gnarly venus flytrap, and some evergreens only on dagger).

I don't want to overcomplicate it though. Something kept simple would be more likely to get implemented due to the lower amount of staff time required. Could just like add some seeds as spawn on monsters or in the copper store, sell pots from the copper or platinum store, set up a watering system, and maybe have the plants yield rare cuttings which could be combined to make new plants. Purely decorative to avoid headaches for the staff, or maybe some very limited uses like materials which could be used to repair instruments and "seal" player-written books so they can't be edited.
