    Hiya

I am new to this server and struggle a bit to get things going.

I came here to relive the glorious adventures of my fisherman, so I went with archery, tactics, healing, anatomy, music, peace and fishing.

I have trained my music and peace and now I would like to get some archery and tactics going. Here is where the problems arise.

The price on arrows is very high, I mean come on 8 gold for a single arrow and it takes what 10-20 arrow to kill ie. a skeleton. Surely I
expect some kind of return for my investment other than skillgains. Since I am new I have no way of getting gold other than hunting,
and the hunting I can do, gives way less than I invested.

I even tried to visit the newbie playershop in Occlo, but that guy obviously thinks newbies are made of gold or he is ripping us off. I am
not sure which, but lets assume the first. His/hers prices are even more expensive, and only sell in bulks of 1k, where in Sosaria am I
supposed to get that kind of money?

I seem to remember that the the price on OSI was like 4 or 5 gold pr. arrow, but I can be mistaken, it have been many years since I
    played UO.

I am not begging for handouts (then I would have taken up begging), I simply cannot get why the price is so high.

Is it really 8gp per arrow here? Wow.

Anyway, join up with the new players guild, Project Sanctuary, and we will get you set up :)

Message me on IRC when you see me and we can chat. Cheers.

    ~Krake

EDIT: Didnt mean to make this sound so imposing. "JOIN THE GUILD! RAAAWWWRRR".
Poogoblin is right, making an alt with 50s in fletching and lumerjacking is a good idea, if you are interested in playing two character right off the bat. A nice perk with that alt is that later on, if you wish, you can turn in into a sword dexxer and get the LJ damage boost.

Also, if you want help with either farming mobs for arrows or feathers, whichever route you take, Project Sanctuary will help ya, even if you dont join up :) Welcome to UO:R man!

You could always make an alt fletcher/LJ just for the sole purpose of making arrows. Eagles give 50 feathers, also cut up harpies and even those little birds give like 10-20 feathers. At 50 LJ I can't imagine it taking longer than 1-2 mins for 50 logs and at 50 fletching I don't think you can fail at making arrows/bolts.

Also, I learned early on, don't shop in Ocollo...they are some of the most overpriced vendors on the shard. Don't be afraid to leave Ocollo, you lose your young status while not there but you can gain it back as long as your account isn't too old by just coming back to Ocollo and typing "[young"

Lastly as far as Era Accuracy, I believe you're correct. Arrows were never 8gp on vendors.

There's also an excellent Shopping District outside of Yew with tons of player vendors that sell items at more reasonable prices than the Occlo vendors. The selection is also much broader. You can find everything from furniture to tapestries, and everything inbetween. Much of it is sold in bulk, but again, the savings are worth the trip.

    Hiya

Thanks for the answers, I appriciate it.

@Poogoblin I slapped my forehead when I read your reply, why didnt I think of that myself :)
Also nice info on the young status

@Krake I might take you up on that offer, when I am out of my younghood and have gotten more refamiliarized
with the game. Oh and yes arrows and bolts are 8gp pr. quite steep pricetag compared to OSI UO. Maybe I should just
sell arrows for a living, and never leave town, would almost be like Trammel :)

My advice is to make a lumberjack/fletcher, and just buy feathers from the bowyer. Logs + 2gp feathers = lots of arrows. Logs are so easy to get, feathers can be annoying.

Message me if you're still having trouble finding arrows. I will sell them to you at a reasonable rate. I know you're not looking for a handout, but you're right when you say that the prices in Occlo are way too high.

If you make them yourself, they are about 5gp. (Boards are 3gp and feathers are 2gp.)

@Cosmo - Just a quick tip that you can macro using a fast swords or fencing weapon or fists to raise stats and skills like tactics, anatomy, healing. Then raise your archery with better stats later. If you want to preserve bandages use wrestling, if you want to get more healing hits, use a weapon. You don't even need to raise the weapon skill but it helps to land more hits for the gains.

    Good luck.

@Halabinder - Can you explain a bit more about this please?

I can remember seesawing for stats, I just cant remember what skills for what stats.

Are you saying that I can gain stats without gaining skills?

It's important for a fighter to have tactics/anatomy/healing. It is faster to level those by wrestling 2 characters on different accounts.

After you get tactics/anatomy/healing high up, your archery will be more effective. Then you will do more damage etc.

Have 2 characters spar wrestling, with one of them healing himself and the other char.

When you become a warrior (GM at fencing/swords/maces + tactics + anatomy and healing above 50), you can do the Rat Valley (http://uorforum.com/threads/where-is-the-rattan-valley.8086/) without any major issues. Just don't get into the fight with too many enemies at once, especially rat mages (red outfits) ! You can earn a lot of money (eg. 300 gp per rat archer) and ... a lot of arrows (from rat archers).

@mikek85 and @Kalanojl pretty much explained it. Archery is an expensive and long process to macro because you need to constantly find more arrows to use. As Mikek85 said if you level up Anatomy, Tactics, and Healing first your archery hits will hurt monsters more so your archery skill will be more effective. With 90+ healing and Anatomy and 60-70's archery your survivability is much higher than 50-60s healing/anat and the same archery stats. I was just trying to get you to think outside the box for getting your skills/stats up. Stats go up naturally as you use your skills. So if you sit around and macro to gain skills, you will inevitably have higher stats also. For example, if you run out of mats to keep a character macroing over night, you can leave him in a town using Anatomy on NPC and will get a bunch of anatomy gains over nigh. Things like that.

One tip to conserve arrows when training is to be as close to your target as possible. This will improve your chance to hit the target and reduce the amount of arrows needed.

And arrows are expensive on NPC vendors to allow for players to craft and sell them. (By default the NPC's undercut any price a player could sell arrows for).

There are also some great harpy hunting areas on the new player island (Ocllo) in the mage tower basement dungeon. (Accessible from the sewers)

Thanks for all the help, it it much appriciated.

@mikek85 - Do they need to be partied or does that not matter?

@Kalanojl - It will be hard to gm those skills since I am an archer :), but I will visit the valley when I get skills and stats settled.

@Chris - Great tip about the distance. I was already using that anyway to let my scavenger agent pick up arrows and to get some heal gains. I will have a look at the basement.

But damn those stats are hard to gain

    Hi Cosmo,

They do not have to be partied. Do you have a house yet? If not, you can spar in town, you just have to start sparring outside of town and wait till they are both blue. Then you can enter town with both and spar next to bank or anywhere in town you'd like.

@mikek85 - So I was fiddling with it when you wrote your reply, and I must have a bad bad memory, I cannot get the 2 chars to fight, party or not.
I go into warmode on both and hit the other char, nothing happends.

No I do not have a house, I do not even have a hole in the ground I can call my own. I am as poor as when I first started playing UO 15 or more years
ago, so I just went out of town.

I do have a lot of fun refreshing old memories, and some things I have no problem with, others are just like I never did them.

Almost forgot, both chars are young if that matters

@Mordekai - Somehow I missed your reply. Thank you for the offer, but I made a fletcher/lumberjack and have a good supply now.

Hi Cosmo, I believe it's cause your characters are young. What you can do is leave the program, spar, and rejoin the young program after. The command is [young I believe to rejoin. A window comes up and you can rejoin. I'm not sure how many times you can rejoin, but definitely more than 3 times.

If you would like, I have a house you could use near britain. It's southeast of the moongate so pretty convenient. I could co-own you and you can use it as your own for as long as you'd like. Let me know if you are interested. I respect people's privacy so I'd never go inside, unless you wanted me to lock something down.

Co-Owners can lock unlock FYI. Just cant add or axe deeds.

EDIT: They also can't secure, or remove secured containers.
