Well I am quite upset, I spend most of my life lurking in the background looking after the forums, facebook & in game helping players and answering pages now your telling me the 10 - 15 pages I reply to a day are spoof players? and the new players I greet daily are all Telamon logged on? I believe it has been mentioned before, but it has to be the DDOS attacks knocking off players. Chris would never unleash DDOS attacks on his own server to increase activity, or would he? -ReZon

I think trying to bring arguments against UOR is pretty pointless since we have a very dedicated player base who knows why they choose this server over others. This also applies to myself. I agree with your point that there is low activity in dungeons, but as already mentioned, you should be able to find peple reguardless if you look at the right places. There are just way too much things to do as simply farming in dungeons 247, but im usualy always able to find a fight if i look for one. Ive started here about 9 Months ago, and made a lot of different characters, suitable for basically anything, and i still wasnt able to try out everything this shard has to offer. On top of that we also have a top notch shard administration, which realy cares about individual players and problems rather than having money in mind. Need any more reasons? After trying out quite a few shards i could possibly agure with you the whole day why ive choosed UOR over others, so feel fee to pm me anytime.
Honestly, I'd play if the shard was filled with nothing but bots! I just like the ruleset. Changes to the original game drove me away from UO. So, I'm real and so is the money that I donate to the server. If I'm just paying to play on my own server, GREAT!
Obviously this person does not play here and is just looking to start some drama. Everyone playing that night knows we got hit by a large DDOS, which caused our host to block all incomming new traffic. However most of our players who were connected and did not lose connection during the initial DDOS attack were fine and able to continue playing. Some players even finished a taming quest during the DDOS attack. Once the massive DDOS attack was over the block was removed and the rest of our players were able to log in. This is the difference between UO Renaissance and other servers. We use professional hosting that is capable of dealing with these attacks with minimal impact on our players. UO Gateway being blocked from polling our server during a DDOS attack is not a sign of some huge bot conspiracy. It is the sign of well designed DDOS mitigation. I haven't been here long but I am totally impressed with the dedication and maturity of the staff here. What a relief.
Whereas I agree with your overall statement, this comment definitely does not resonate well. Plenty of other shards use professional hosting with competent tech support.
If you pick up the phone and call 99% of the server hosting companies out there and ask what their policy on DDOS mitigation is they will respond that they will ignore the traffic, sell you a hardware firewall or null route the connection completely should the traffic exceed 1gb/s. On a good server the Null route period is 1 hour (our old host peer1) On a cheap server the null route might be 4-24 hours, even if the DDOS attack was only 15 minutes. We pay a staggering sum for hosting that provides actual mitigation services so that the traffic is redirected to scrubbing center to allow good traffic to continue and block bad traffic in the event of an attack. I only make statements like this because I have looked into the hosting that other servers use, and I have spent months trying to find a host that can harden our connection enough so that the attacks are 100% filtered. The average UO free shard only pays 35-150$ a month for their hosting, sometimes not even using a dedicated server. This is not meant as an insult, this is a statement on the lack of quality protection services available for things like Ultima Online. Some of the services I looked at to protect our server were in the 800$ to $8000 a month range. This is an example of a professional host with active mitigation and traffic analysis services.
He made a valid point, but there is a drastic difference between a web host, a hosted virtual server, a hosted physical server and a server hosting behind a corporate grade ddos mitigation system. Our previous host was awesome, however they do not offer the services we need to prevent these type of attacks. If not for the DDOS attacks we would still be perfectly happy with Peer1.
This is almost certainly a shill(or an employee) for another server, as in the last week I have gotten messages to my Reddit account with the same graph and story and I assume others who use the Reddit Ultima Online subsection have gotten the same. To me this means it is likely someone who is busy with a campaign to discredit this server and possibly other servers as well. Almost every server has strategies to boost their online count, its the way it is because most servers are in it for the profit and do everything they can to be competitive. I PK here, I PvM here and do other various things. I have done so on other servers in the past and the activity is roughly the same. For the most part, people just play on the server that suits their tastes the best and its unfortunate how people go so far as posts like these and even DDoS campaigns to ruin other peoples enjoyment of this game and the server they have chosen. Its even more unfortunate that I would confidently bet my money that I know which server this person hails from. I would urge this person to allow all UO private servers to simply stand on their own merit to garner activity. Thanks for reading!
Even if you DDOS'd the white house, it's difficult to get caught. The people investigating you would have to get a copy of one of the clients. Once they did that, they would have to figure out who is communicating with those clients, which is very difficult to do when the source is well hidden. Usually people get caught for forgetting to hide their connection or not hiding themselves well enough.
