I see that I can buy "plans for a small boat" for like 5K and change....

How do boats work here on UOR? Do I actually get the boat when i buy the plans or do I need to get mats and have somenoe make it for me after I get the plans?

Found my answer on the wiki. Its just plans...boats need to be crafted by a 3xGM crafter and require additional mats.

This server is SO unforgiving to get started. Such slow progress across the board with skill gains, gold grinding, etc...

Really thick barrier of ice to break through until u can actually play and enjoy UO for what it has to offer IMO :(

Been here approx 1 week and pretty much all I have done is macro on my accounts and still not even close to viable on any of them yet other than my 0X Gm dexxer who can pretty much only farm low mobs for petty gold :(

I would say hang in there or consider a different approach to the game. That is to say, try not to focus on the endgame so much - there are things to do in UO for all skill levels.

Or use that guide El Horno just posted and prepare to be swimmin' in gold!

TY for the advice both Horno and Alice

    Read that guide many times.

Its sounds good on paper but for a player brand new to this server its not possible to follow that guide.

Dont have the gold to buy 700 skill points so the whole herding/snooping/etc to gain stats quickly is out the window.

Resorted to making a LJ/swords/healing/anat/etc to farm basic gold to get the gold to even begin to start following the guide but...how much gold can you relaly make on ettins and trolls and earth eles? Its a slooooooooooow gold grind on those things :(

Hit a wall in both provo (and taming) because I dont have a boat and cant afford one. Could go try OLs for provo 74+ (which I prob will) but that seems like its going to be froguht with repetative death and slow skill gains.

Are you in IRC? I can get you past w/e provo wall your at. You need to hop in IRC and ask in the main room for someone to get you access to a pirate provo house.

Hey dude you want a free boat? I'll hook you up tomorrow morning 10 am Pacific time.

I also agree that the entry into UO is painful and sucky at best. I for one can't stand macroing especially in the beginning of the game. I always thought it was an absolutely insane part of the game and an ugly flaw.

As far as gold, I made like 100k in only a couple hours by harvesting Cotton and selling it to other players. I used this to buy a boat and make my stun mage for pvp.

I think there is a guide with all the cotton locations somewhere.

The easiest initial PVM character is the peace dexxer, it doesn't even require a boat. Just have a character use peace making on himself while he is sparring and he will gm peace, healing, anat, tactics, etc
This is very powerful against a lot of spawn.
But the Provo dexxer is way better and should be your main goal, just follow the guide for that.

Never use exceptional instruments while you're training Provo. But once you've gmed it always use exceptional becusse it increases Provo chance.

Wyvern isle will take you to like 95 and that's all you need anyways.

    Pm me for more questions.

This shard is not hard to get started on. It sounds like you just need to become educated with all the custom features this shard totes around. Then you'll be good to go.

Not sure where you are on your provoke skill, but I gmed it by using a trapped pirate on a boat near the pirate spawn on Occlo, then pulling another down and setting a macro. Left it over night and I was gm the next morning. * that was starting at a skill in the upper 70's if I remember correctly.
