I agree with the sentiment that they look out of place. Blaise's comment about seeing UOF, not UOR is right on for me as I, admittedly, never played UO during the time period this art is from. I logged onto UOF when I was hunting for free shards this summer and it was pretty gross! I also don't like that it adds another rare item to the game that can't be stolen.
Somewhat agree PFR, but I think the limited scope of colors on player statues (stone type, I guess) keep them pretty well in check. I can definitely see where that gives you the same reaction though.
I agree, its just the art style that feels out of place with the era. This is an artifact from Ilshnear and wasn't obtainable by players until the elves expansion. It's 3D art being inserted into a 2D game since this was made for the old 3D client. I can live with the color they are because honestly you can get some pretty bright and garish hues off the plain dye tub but for me its just the art. I feel the same way about character statues as well but I think the more muted tones tend to keep those in check a bit. I'd like to see the crystals perhaps changed to rock art or maybe even using the larger gem art,as far as I know there are larger gems than the ones normally bought and dropped they would make a neat replacement for a gem mine rare! In all honesty though I don't care what happens with them. Hopefully they will just be rare enough that I wont see them in every house in Yew or something by next year haha.
Walking around the overworld, town, and dungeons, there are lots of unused items (rocks even) that could be used instead. I do not think we are (or should ever have to be) any where near the point where these crystals, which look very out of place here, should be added.
There are certain forum contributors that tend to complain more than others as well as decry Chris and his team regularly and also apparently hate these crystals. For that reason and that reason alone, I LOVE these crystals.
OP likes them because he has them. I vote make everyone happy by replacing them with a less garish but equally valuable pixel. Also, UO RNG is bonkers.
I liked them well before I had one, I had planned on running all my gem mine maps that night in hopes of getting a drop but something with the instance wasn't taking a player count and robbed me of my ironman so I decided to wait in the rest. I personally would like to do a sweet black backdrop, gem, crystal and ore deco scheme. I have if worked out in my head but I think it'd take a few of these drops.
To all the people claiming that it isn't Era-Accurate artwork....completly irrelevant and largely incorrect in a sense. The major difference between Era artwork and later artwork is the simple black (or much darkened) outline of objects. These crystals actually fit that mold. They actually were designed to fit with the current artwork. Objects that do NOT have that darkened outline are the questionable ones or were not intended to be objects. If they ever get around to an artwork patch, give them a black outline on all the shards within the crystals instead of just the outline of the crystal object itself if you want it to look MORE Era-accurate...not that era accuracy should matter at all in a useless pixel. Regardless, I could really care less about an item that has zero use other than to sit there and look pretty to some and horrible to others.
I don't get why people are so mad about these? I mean, where are you likely to encounter them? In the instance, I don't think they're being removed as decoration in the instance, are they? The other would be people's houses I guess, but how does this effect anyone but the homeowner? If you don't like them, just avoid Kane's house. I don't really get the argument that it's so garish it doesn't jive with the server, I could go put a hot pink penis made out of cloth on my roof right now if I cared and no one would bat an eye except maybe my neighbor. It would be different if it were blaze masks and shit where you're forced to interact with players wearing them, but this is shit in people's houses. And by the way, there are plenty of houses that find ways to be garish without the help of these crystals.
Make sure they are stealable. I'd prefer if they were a graphic more consistent with our other art. Also do they give off glowing light effect? That would be a plus. I don't like the introduction of any more items that aren't stealable. So as long as they weigh about 8-9 stones they could be alright.
I think rares etc have a preset weight value of 11 or 20 (I forgot). That's no cruel joke, it's a cruel fact. Telamon is open minded to changing weights, he just have to be made aware of it (Forum posts or IRC PMs). Else he tends to skip changing the weight... And it takes an awful long time. I wish all that rares were preset to 9 stones.
Server birth/prize room rares weigh 20 stones, but I think of all the spawning rares, only the barrel is unstealable (15 stones). Been a while since I checked the weights, but I know I've seen you pinch a fruit basket first hand.
Oh yes, I didnt mean the spawning rares. Just the real cool stuff. All monster statuettes are 11 stones btw, but I hope this will be changed soon. PS: Grave dirt is too heavy too and I bet alot of the other AMIB and lvl7 rares too. No way to verify it though.
