I'd like to see some larger houses with UO security concerns built into the design. This can be done with a simple vestibule with an extra internal door (like an airlock). An entrance can look a natural design while doing the job that is typically done with tables and trash barrels.
I'm +1 for staff created house builds. Custom housing wrecks house pvp though. You end up with houses where the people in them are just trolls. Their house has easy access to teleporters no one can use or just a staircase they have to run up to drop in. Or try literally could make a teleporters roof where even if u kill them it's literally impossible to loot them. So it's significantly harder to kill these dudes and even if you manage to, you get nothing, it makes house hiding so much worse.
Like many of the comments, this was really a subject I was really torn on because you had people (like myself) that would leverage this program to create housing that was still true to the medieval feel of the game while you had others (and fully within their right) create what I would consider bad designs or simply houses that would be geared directly to PvP or trap monsters for PvM. I actually liked the suggestion about the ability to manipulate the interior of the house's construction. Being able to adjust room sizes would be great. There were some designs within the OSI models that I didn't like. I never thought the large marble was a good fit - or even the villa. Maybe if they went with a darker marble that wasn't so bright or materials for the villa that were more consistent with the medieval era. Personally, at this point, I like walking around and seeing consistency among the homes. It's nostalgic to a degree and mainly meets the medieval feel. Perhaps for some variety we could take the existing structures and provide alternate materials for the build? Housing deeds could be sold as housing plans (plat) that when attempting to place gives the player the option to choose from a variety of materials to build. This doesn't adjust the floorplan, only the materials. For example, when placing a small house, once the plat is placed (similar to when placing a base for a custom home which is blank with dirt and a player chosen base) players then choose the building material: 'field stone', 'wood', 'plaster' etc.. and get the result. Also being able to select the appropriate material for doors, windows, banisters etc.. I think a brick villa or a fieldstone villa would be neat. Not sure how difficult it would be to program such a system. I even thought that given the resources available, perhaps this could become deeds sellable through players after allocating a number of stone/wood/cloth etc.. similar to the ship program - but figured that would be REALLY difficult and place a ridiculous premium on housing deeds and plots thus destroying the real estate market.
I think some adding houses to our data base will add a greater variety to the server. We can have some individuality in the server, while showing newer players that while we do not have player built housing, we have a large variety for people to choose from. I know some will argue that we do already have a large variety, but I will disagree. I know I enjoy the ability to use a courtyard, yet I only have three options to choose from. As well the lets say middle sized houses are also lacking in that many options. I think that telamon should look into and develop housing further after he has time from his other products that affect the game more practically at this time than housing.
After thinking about it a bit (even though the inside customization, at least moving walls sounds like a cool idea) I think I'd rather if Tela just redesigned or introduced better medium housing. (large forge size to lshape) maximizing floor space and multi levels but still keeping it classy The marble buildings look good but the layouts are bleh
If staff want to introduce another house or two, that could be cool. I absolutely do not agree with housing that can be customized by the user, inside or out. The reality of it for me is that even if just the houses we have available are the only ones we could ever have, I'm fine with that. If we are going to shy away from things neon in color, certainly this house customization would be something to shy from as well.
Because of eye sores, customization is bad. Although more staff created houses would be cool. I am fond of multi story houses. maybe different courtyard setups ect. I don't see it taking long to add more houses.
