Oh, we all secretly love it. If you play Felucca UO, you're either a griefer, a white knight trying to fight back, or a masochist.
Right, but that's not the way it works here -- I wouldn't leave myself in my house AFK all the time if it weren't for the platinum system. In a way I don't like how I feel obligated to always have all three characters logged in.
Yeah, and I am stuck right now with only 4G internet through my phone so I can only log in for the hours I am home overnight. Stupid verizon also blocks IRC so not much live community participation for me
Is stealing someone's property in UO considered being an asshole? I thought it was considered being a thief. Perhaps they are synonymous? I always afford people the opportunity to buy their stuff back. There are ways to avoid being house looted, for example, security for your house or doing detect hidden when you enter your house, but most people are either too lazy or fail to do this easy task. This game has very different playing styles and tons of stuff to do for various people. That being said, the risk of having your shit stolen or being pked and having everything on you looted is what makes this game so great- it also is what differentiates it from other mmo's like for instance dark age of camelot. in daoc, you die in pvp you don't lose anything. Having a gank squad of PKs is ok...it sucks and you may not like it but it is okay. This game is a lot like real life in many ways- shit is not fair. I don't think I will understand why PKs run in gank squads and kill bards, it seems less challenging to me than let's say a solo PK or a duo PK running to kill folk. So I don't get the complaining with PKs killing people. Bank every 5 minutes so you don't lose anything but replaceable regs. As far as champion spawns go, yeah when PKs roll in that sucks, plain and simple. Just because you can do something doesn't mean it's ok. <------ Well, actually it does. As I said in my previous post, it's all relative what is considered griefing. If I got killed in my house while I was macroing overnight would I think that is griefing? No, it's no big deal because it's just a game. I would be a little annoyed, but I understand the risks of staying online. I look at it like this- if people really run around the entire map looking for people to house kill or people to house loot all day- that sounds incredibly boring to me, but hey more power to them- maybe they think it's the most exciting thing ever. If good PVPers are running around doing everything they want because it's allowed then stop them. I dunno maybe get together a group of a lot of people to combat them or challenge them? If they keep PKing in numbers that are not fair odds and are unchallengeable to them- then get more people than them and have an all out war. That's why this game can fit so many playing styles is that so many people can do so many different things- ie; doing anything they want. For the record, PVPers running around PKing people doesn't necessarily mean they are doing "everything or anything they want." I don't pretend to know what other people "want" or not "want" on this game. I only know that griefing can be classified as anything. If one person's intent is to grief someone else, but the supposed person being griefed doesn't care or doesn't think it's griefing is it then griefing still? The ultimate goal of this game is to have fun, I think at least. If you are no longer having fun it's hard to say what advice to give. I was no longer having fun on the previous server I was on, so I quit and went elsewhere. Some time ago, some guy put a crap ton of boats in the water blocking entrance to most of the known ocean middle area. Was this an attempt at griefing or did it grief people? I have no idea, it didn't grief me, I just docked my boat on land moved 10 tiles and dropped it pass the blockade. I did think it was cool as hell, but it looked like it probably took someone an hour or two to do so either they are super creative and imaginative or super bored. This is a moot argument because what is considered griefing is all relative to the person. Some people act like there should be some sort of code for thieves or griefers. Or a line they shouldn't cross. If there is a line- people will cross it, especially if there are no consequences. And in a game- there are no consequences.
PKs roll in packs and gank bards because it is profitable, or in the very least, another notch on the Kill Count Belt. It's a numbers game be it money or heads. Most PKs are not out looking for a challenge, but some don't run away from it either.
I know. Sounds boring :/ Playing a game I can easily beat just doesn't sound appealing to me, but that is just me. I still wouldn't call it griefing though.
