The purpose of this guide is to be a repository for the customizations in place on this shard, as they differ from 2000-2001 era Ultima Online. Many of the items below will be familiar to players of other freeshards since this era of production UO, but I just want to spell everything out as we do get new players who haven't touched the game since then. Most entries below will be short, providing a brief summary of a given tweak or customization, with a link to a longer explanation for the more complex systems. I would greatly appreciate responses below to the various customizations I have missed!

    Meta-game customizations
    Connecting and 3rd Party Programs
UO:Renaissance provides a client download here, which includes the latest version of Razor, a 3rd party program. Razor is the preferred method to connect to the shard, and provides additional utilities to the user. Most other 3rd party programs are forbidden and can earn you a ban from the shard if caught using them.
    Razor Tips
    Razor Title Bar Setup
    Razor Restock Macro

    Accounts
UO:Renaissance allows 3 accounts per player.

    Macroing
Macroing is allowed on this shard. However, some activities (mining, lumberjacking, shearing sheep, selling items, gathering items, fishing at GM skill) have an occasional gump that pops up and requires response within 120 seconds. Failure to respond to this gump within that time will send a player to jail. The jail time increases each time a player fails to respond correctly in the future. The first infraction is a 5-minute ban, increasing all the way up to a 21-day ban for one's eleventh infraction. Additionally, each time the gump is not answered correctly, the account receives 10 seconds less time to respond to future gumps of this nature.

    New Players
UO:Renaissance is constantly adding to its New Player system. At the core is the standard "[young]" system from the days of OSI. New players can begin in Occlo, with the [young] tag on their name. While [young], their characters cannot be attacked or stolen from by other players. [Young] status expires after 14 days or 48 hours of gameplay, whichever comes first.

Additionally, Occlo has various features added to it, in order to enhance the ability of new players to get up to speed on the mechanics of UO more quickly. There is a mage tower, a pirate outpost, and a series of tunnels and caves to explore.

    The Platinum System
The platinum system is a custom rewards system on this shard which is sort of a mix between production UO's "Veteran Rewards", and various other items (mostly decorative). Players earn platinum in a variety of ways: through normal gameplay time each month, by killing monsters, by killing special/boss monsters, in certain treasure chests, and many more ways.
    The Platinum System

    The Holiday Coin System
During some real-life holiday periods, staff creates and manages events in which players can earn green-colored "holiday coins". These coins can be turned in to vendors who sell holiday-themed items during the holiday period and for a few weeks afterwards. Holiday coins can be kept and used at future holidays. That is, a holiday coin obtained during the Halloween event is still usable for rewards if kept and used during the Christmas event.
    Example Post about Holiday Coins

    Housing
Houses follow a late-1999 ruleset, which is sort of a mix between T2A and UOR period. Secure containers are safe but have weight limits. Locked down containers have no weight limits, but can be opened and emptied by visitors. Items anywhere in a house zone or courtyard will not decay. Crafted house add-ons can be re-deeded via an axe, but only in the first 24 hours they are placed. After that, axing them will delete them.

Chain Lightning and Meteor Swarm only do 1 damage to characters within a house zone. This may be changed in the future.

UO:Renaissance allows one house per character. Each account can have up to 5 characters; across the 3 permissable accounts, this gives a maximum of 15 houses that can be owned. A map showing the location of all houses on the shard can be seen here:
Zoom in to see individual houses

There are also two custom houses on this shard: the Fortress (modified castle) and the Large Keep (modified Stone Keep). Both offer more lockdowns and better functionality than their original counterparts, but have additional costs to purchase them. Their footprint on the land is approximately the same as their original counterparts.
Details for available house types on UO:Renaissance

    Monsters and Animals
    Artificial Intelligence and Behavior
    Targeting and Pursuit
Monsters tend to become aggressive to players and NPCs in their line of sight very quickly.

Once a monster sees an enemy combatant, it will follow them for significant distance. That is, if a drake sees you, and you then walk away to 20+ tiles from its present location, it will continue to follow you in attack mode. Casting Invisibility, Hiding, or Recalling, will end its pursuit.

    Firebreath
Firebreathing monsters use a complex algorithm to determine when they are eligible to use their breath attack. Effectively, when a dragon that has been out of combat sees a player or monster to aggro, there is a random 1 to 10 second delay between that moment and when it will use its breath attack. After that delay, but before it exits combat (2 minutes), it will immediately fire its breath at the next moment it is able.
    Patch Note

Pet Control, Stable Slots, and Bonding
Players have 8 control slots from which they can control pets.
    • Large monsters such as dragons and white wyrms take 3 slots each.
    • Medium monsters, and all magic-casters, take 2 slots each: nightmares, imps, drakes.
    • All other monsters take 1 control slot.

Players have access to stable slots based on their skill in Animal Taming, Animal Lore, and Veterinary. This ranges from 6 slots to 20 slots.
    Patch Notes

UO:Renaissance has a custom bonding system. Each character can initially bond one pet, and to do so requires "peculiar meat" from Boss Monsters. To bond a pet that requires 1 pet control slot, feed it a piece of food, wait a week, and feed it a second piece of food. To bond a pet requiring two or more control slots, feed it food, wait a week, and then feed it one piece of peculiar meat at a time per control slot needed. You must also have the taming skill needed to tame the pet in order to bond with it. There is also an instanced event which allows players to earn additional bonding slots.
    Pet Bonding
Pet Bonding - increased bonding slots

    Bosses
Certain monsters have a small chance of spawning a "Boss" counterpart in specific locations. These Boss Monsters have different hues and names, increased stats (and sometimes additional abilities, such as spellcasting), and offer greater gold and platinum rewards than their normal counterparts. Some also offer "peculiar meat" when their corpse is carved, which is used in the pet bonding process.

    Treasure Hunting
There exists a 6th level of treasure map and chest here, called "ingeniously-drawn" maps. They have stronger traps, more loot, and much stronger monsters that spawn when they are dug up.

    Crafting
    Stonecrafting
Miners have the ability to dig up stone ore: stone, sandstone, or marble. They can smelt this ore into stone 'ingots', which can be used with Carpentry to craft stone decoration items (pedestals, pillars, etc.)

    Oak boards: ships and ladders
When chopping trees, lumberjacks may find oak logs instead of the normal logs. These can be turned into oak boards (with an axe). Oak boards can be used to craft Ships and Ladders (a custom house add-on available on this shard).

Ships are not able to be purchased from vendors; instead, ship 'plans' may be purchased, which detail the raw materials (oak boards, ingots, cloth) needed for a skilled carpenter to craft a ship.

    Skill Customizations
    Poisoning
Poisoned weapons have a 50% chance to poison a player or NPC on hit, regardless of the Poison skill of the person who put the poison on the weapon.

    Tracking
Tracking success also takes into account the Hiding and Stealth skill of the player to be tracked, as well as whether or not they are currently hiding. Additionally, Detect Hidden can positively impact one's chance of successfully tracking a player with high Hiding/Stealth.

    Lockpicking
Lockpicking can be trained up to 95.0 real skill via GM Tinker locked containers. From there, it must be trained to GM by "level 4" dungeon chests, which spawn in about 20 locations around Brittania.

    Remove Traps
Remove Traps can be trained to 98.0 skill via GM Tinker trapped containers. From there, it must be trained to GM by "level 4" dungeon chests, and/or level 3 or 4 treasure map chests.

    Archery
Chance to hit via the archery skill is based on both the distance to the target, and whether or not the archer was moving prior to their shot.
    Patch Notes

    Lumberjacking
Lumberjacking skill will raise to 65.0 skill via combat with an axe. From there, it must be trained to GM via chopping trees. The damage bonus in combat that you receive via axes is equal to (Lumberjacking/10) - 1. So at GM, one gets a 9 damage bonus if using an axe.
    Patch Notes

    Magery
    Spell customizations:
    Reactive Armor, Protection, Magic Reflection
These spells are mutually exclusive; only one can be active at a time. When its abilities wear off, there is a 1-minute cooldown in which you cannot recast any of these three spells. Click on each spell to see its description on the UO:Renaissance website.

    Fishing
GM Fishermen have the chance to fish up an Ancient SOS, which is guarded by a kraken. Upon defeating the kraken, they will receive the Ancient SOS. There are four types of Ancient SOS', each of which can be used to enter an instanced dungeon for a limited time.
    Staff Post: Ancient SOS'

    Player Versus Player
    Duel system
Renaissance has a customized Duel system which allows players to meet in a special duel pit for a sanctioned fight. This can be either 1v1 or 2v2. Custom rulesets can be enforced for these duels, and all fights and results are logged for the website database.

I would call this the UOR 'Briefing'. Brilliant! You've put together quite the comprehensive list there. Well done!

Can Remove Trap go from vendor trained to 98.0 on Gm trapped boxes? Or do I need 50/70 skill traps like lock picking?

Remove Trap skill needs to be relatively close to the Tinker skill. I don't have the precise math worked out though, since the change.

My memory of in-era is basically nil, but I believe some or all of these belong:

    Duels
    AMIBs
    Pirate spawns (maybe?)
    Oak Boards
    Crafted Boats
    Stone Crafting (maybe?)
    Website tools

I can't believe I missed AMIBs. I'll put up some edits on that but will likely need your input.

Pirate spawns is a good idea, or perhaps more broadly just the overall Occlo island - the underground cave, etc.

Thanks, will try to have this up soon!

Great post. The "Boss guide" link doesn't work, looks like it's from the old forums. Also, you might mention that bosses have a rare chance to drop a statuette.

House deeds are "newbied", they will decay if set on the ground anywhere after a short time (60seconds?), including a house.
